Weathervane on the chimney itself
The weather vane is an element that is mounted on top of the chimney. It is not only a decorative element, although its presence gives the roof a finishing touch. The main thing is its purpose is to prevent reverse thrust in the chimney. In this article you will learn how to make a weather vane on the chimney with your own hands.
Weathervane or flyugarka - what is it for?

In fact, the weather vane or vane is a simple cap. It is also called differently, for example:
- chimney cap,
- umbrella on the chimney
- umbrella on the tube
- head of pipe.

Qualitatively made wind vane is an integral part of the chimney, which, plus everything, makes the appearance of the roof aesthetic and complete.

Its main purpose is to prevent the appearance of reverse thrust or wind blowing. As a result, if it is available, safe operation of the chimney is ensured. It also protects precipitation in the form of rain, snow and the like from falling into the chimney system. Installation of a weather vane in some cases is necessary for another reason. Often, it is not possible to raise the chimney pipe to the wind support zone, so installing a weather vane is a good solution.
Note! Unprotected chimney pipe will not last long. The temperature drops, the effects of precipitation, the wind destroys the chimney, which is caused by dampness at the top of the pipe.

A quality weather vane will additionally strengthen the upper part of the pipe and make it durable.
Types of weathervanes
Weathervanes may differ not only in the material of manufacture, but also in some design features. Among the wide variety of types and models of weathervanes, today you can find:
- umbrella on the tube
- cap on the tube
- smoke with installed weather vane.

For example, you can find the original art vane. In this case, a large number of forging elements, carved and other parts prevail on the weather vane. In most cases, a metal profile, forged metal or 4 mm sheet metal, galvanized steel is used for their manufacture.

As for the manufacture of this item, this process should be carried out in accordance with existing fire safety requirements. For this reason, weathervanes are equipped with a special screen, which is made of steel, the thickness of which exceeds half a centimeter. This screen is installed from the roof of the chimney at a distance of 40 mm and performs the function of protection against moisture and overheating. Such an element is placed on the last row of bricks, so that the chimney masonry is maintained for a long time.
Note! With the observance of the manufacturing technique of the weather vane, it will protect the chimney from oblique rain / snow.
You can find more complex designs that are different and more practical. For example, it is possible to note a chimney having a special opening. It contributes to better elimination of combustion products, as well as prevents the ingress of smoke into the ventilation shaft. No less important is the protection from small birds that can fall into the chimney. Let's see how easy you can make a weather vane with your own hands.
Fabrication and installation

Of course, in each case, the installation technology of the weather vane will be different. This will depend on the material used to make the chimney. For example, it may be an asbestos-cement pipe. So, the manufacturing process consists of the following successive steps. The deflector vane must be made of corrosion-resistant materials. In our case, the diameter of the chimney is 120 mm. Therefore, the first thing is fixed rack (4) with nuts M6 (8) and bolts M6 (7) to the lower cylinder (9). Then use the clamp (5) and attach the upper cylinder (3). Next on the seam is going to reverse the cone (2). The cone-shaped cap is mounted and installed using special rivets (6).

The design of the weather vane is made by simple technology, so this work is within everyone’s power.
