Roof

The modern building materials market offers roofing coverings for every taste and budget. Due to the high competition, the consumer receives high-quality products for reasonable money, which is constantly being improved, improved by the manufacturer. Recently, professional roofers have “introduced fashion” to Ondulin, a lightweight and durable roofing material to overlap the roof. However, it has one unpleasant property - such a coating fades over time under the action of ultraviolet rays. In this article we will tell you how to paint ondulin in order to preserve the aesthetic appearance of the coating and extend the life of the roof.

Characteristics of the material

Ondulin is the name of the production of the French company of the same name, which began production of this practical roofing material in the distant 1944. He conceived as a means of quickly repairing and eliminating leaks in roofs from corrugated board, slate or tile without dismantling the structure, which eventually turned into an independent coating. Ondulin is a rectangular sheet with a wavy profile, the size of which is 205x305 cm. The structure of this roofing material includes only natural ingredients: purified cellulose fibers, natural pigments, modifiers and petroleum bitumen. The use of this material has the following advantages:

  1. A light weight. One sheet of ondulin weighs only 6 kilograms, which makes this material lighter than other roofing. Due to this quality, it is mounted on the most simple truss frame and crate. The ease of ondulin allows you to lay a new floor without removing the old.
  2. Strength. The fibrous structure provides ondulin high strength, it easily withstands the snow load of 300 kg / m2. The maximum load at which the ondulin roof is deformed is 600 kg / m2, but, as a rule, it is not the roof covering that collapses, but the batten and frame.
  3. Water resistant and low absorbency. Ondulin is highly resistant to thawed or rainwater, it does not absorb moisture due to bitumen impregnation.
  4. Long service life. Ondulin maintains 25 cycles of freezing and thawing without changing the structure and loss of properties. The service life of the material, guaranteed by the manufacturer, is 15 years. With proper care, a roof with such a coating will last at least 30-40 years.
  5. Resistance to microorganisms. Oil bitumen, which is impregnated with ondulin, is the strongest antiseptic, so the roof of this material will not spoil the mold, fungus or moss.

Note! The main advantage of ondulin is the safety and ecological purity of this material. All components included in the composition do not adversely affect the environment or human health. This quality distinguishes ondulin from other roofing materials containing harmful impurities.

UV exposure

Perhaps the only drawback of ondulin, about which buyers and manufacturers always warn buyers, is the instability of this material to the effects of ultraviolet radiation. When the sun's rays on the roof of corrugated sheeting, the natural pigment that gives color to the coating begins to slowly deteriorate. Because of this, ondulin fade over time, and the destruction of the pigment is uneven. This process significantly reduces the decorative qualities of the coating, spoils the appearance of the roof. There are 2 types of material that differ in the method of coloring:

  • Ondulin "economy" class. In the process of producing roofing of this type, sheets are coated with paint before impregnation with bitumen. This technology allows you to "hide" easily destroyed pigment under a protective layer. Ondulin "economy" class is less resistant to ultraviolet radiation, therefore, retains color for 6-8 years, but it costs an order of magnitude cheaper.
  • Ondulin luxury. In the process of producing luxury roofing, the painting procedure is performed 2 times. At first sheets are painted before bitumen soaking, and a second time after. Due to the double layer of pigment, the material retains a rich color for more than 10-15 years, but you have to pay for this additional layer of paint.
Standard color range

Important! Another problem with working with Ondulin is the limited color gamut in which this material is produced. The manufacturer produces roofing 4 colors: black, brown, green, red. The scarcity of the color palette causes many homeowners to paint ondulin on their own with the help of special compositions.

Color selection

Fortunately, the problem of fading ondulin is quite easy to fight. For this, when the roofing material finally loses its color, the sheets are painted with special compositions. This coating improves the appearance, and at the same time increases the moisture resistance of the roof. Paint for ondulin should have similar properties to it in order to withstand adverse weather events throughout its life. However, the construction market does not offer many suitable options. For staining ondulin use:

  1. Special paint for ondulin "Ondupaint". It is made on the basis of acrylic and silicone, therefore, drying, forms a durable film on the surface of the material. This option is supported by the fact that the paint is made by the manufacturer of ondulin, which guarantees their compatibility. However, the color range “Ondupaint” is limited to the same 4 standard colors (black, green, brown, red). This paint dries only 4 hours, and serves not less than 5 years. The disadvantage of this option is the high cost of paint, it will cost more than analogues. Paint
  2. Acrylic paint. Water-dispersed polyacrylate, which is the basis of this paint, on drying, forms a water-insoluble, stable film on the treated surface, which is similar in properties to bitumen. It is cheaper than the specialized composition, produced by the French company Onduline, but it is only 2-3 seasons based on Odulin. The huge advantage of this option is a huge palette of colors, so that the roof can be given any color. Acrylic paint for roofs
  3. Bituminous mastic. Due to the similarity of the compositions, bitumen mastic or "liquid rubber" is an excellent composition for updating the roofing. It forms on the surface of the material a thick, durable film that resists atmospheric phenomena. Bitumen-based roofing paint is more expensive than acrylic, but less expensive than Ondupaint. It remains on the roof for about 3 years. All shades included in the color palette mastic, matte, but not so many. Paint on the basis of bitumen dries 2-3 hours. Bituminous paint

Experienced roofers claim that in order to achieve an optimal result when painting, it is important to properly prepare the surface to be treated. First of all, the roof slope is cleaned of dust and dirt with water. Sometimes “water procedures” alone are not enough, then a brush with plastic fibers is used. After drying ondulin primed, and then put the paint in 1 or 2 layers.
