Roof

When performing roofing work, many nonprofessional masters encounter the fact that they do not know how and what to cut professional flooring. Lack of knowledge, experience or the necessary tools can lead to material damage. Improper cutting and processing of the edges of the cut is the most common cause of corrosion on the surface of the sheeting. At the same time, such roofing can be very easy and convenient to install, if you perform work in accordance with the technology. In this article we will tell you how to cut a professional flooring correctly so that it will last for 25-50 years.

The structure of the material

At first glance it seems that the profiled flooring is a common sheet metal, which is embossed with the help of stamping. However, this opinion is erroneous, since this material has a complex multi-layer coating. As a basis for the production of profiled sheeting, genuine steel of 0.5-1.2 mm thickness is actually used, which is covered with a layer of zinc and polymer (plastisol, Pural, polyester) in the manufacturing process. Such a structure of the profiled sheet protects the metal surface from contact with the liquid, preventing the appearance of corrosion centers. There are the following types of profiles, differing in height, width and shape of the profile:

  1. Wall. This type of sheeting is used for wall cladding, fencing and fence construction, and formwork. It has a small carrying capacity, therefore it is not used as a roof covering.
  2. Roofing. Roof decking has a large number of vertical stiffeners, which provide a large load-bearing capacity of this material. It is used to overlap roofs.
  3. Universal. Universal profiled has average performance, it can be used to perform any construction tasks.

Note! The peculiarity of working with profiled sheeting is that its polymeric coating is extremely susceptible to high temperatures. It quickly burns out, exposing the metal, not resistant to corrosion. Therefore, processing, cutting and installation of corrugated sheets are performed only by the cold method.

Cutting tools

Bulgarian

The Bulgarian is the popular name for an angle grinder, which in Soviet times was imported mainly from friendly Bulgaria. This versatile tool has many uses, including it is used to cut decking. With the help of the grinder, you can quickly cut a large amount of material, professional craftsmen perform cutting in batches. However, this method has 3 significant drawbacks:

  • Angle grinder is an abrasive tool, so when cutting a professional flooring inevitably there will be minor damage, chips and other defects that impair the corrosion resistance of the material.
  • When performing a sharp, even if you use a special disc, metal particles of a high temperature fly out, which burn through the polymeric coating of a professional flooring.
  • Diamond and special metal discs during cutting leave uneven, torn edges at the work site, which need to be further processed.

Note! To cut a professional flooring grinder, you need to buy a special disc for cutting profiled flooring. It has a small thickness of up to 1.6 mm and teeth made of carbide materials.

To protect the edges of the cut from the appearance of corrosion after treatment with grinders, they are treated with a special primer or paint.

Metal cutter

Most professional craftsmen use a special hacksaw for cutting professional flooring. It is in the arsenal of any builder, and cutting blades are quite inexpensive. In addition, when performing work with a hacksaw, much less noise is generated. This method is popular because it has the following advantages:

  1. The edges of the cut are even, without chips and burrs, so they do not need additional processing and protective coating.
  2. Cutting is performed quickly, neatly, without the use of large physical force. With the help of a hacksaw, it is possible to independently cut sheets into size for the manufacture of a small fence or roof.
  3. For this method of cutting does not require complex tools, it can be used even in the absence of electricity.

Important! With a hacksaw, it is convenient to cut in a straight line. It is almost impossible to make curved cuts with this simple tool, scissors are better suited for them.

For cutting a professional flooring with a hacksaw, it will be necessary to hammer together a cutting table, to which sheets will be fixed with special clips. Otherwise, the work will have to work together.

Scissors for metal

In the absence of grinders and hacksaws for cutting sheeting, you can use metal shears. They look like ordinary ones, but they have a larger size and sharp straight blades made of carbide materials. Scissors are irreplaceable for metal if it is necessary to cut thin strips of a professional flooring or to execute figured cutting. Work with this tool is done slowly and hard enough.

Professional roofing masters use scissors for metal as an additional tool when working with decking. They cut this material well across the wave, but for cutting along the profile they are practically not used, since the flexibility of the profiled sheet in this direction is extremely low.

Scissors for metal стоят недорого, обычно они есть в арсенале кровельного мастера. При работе с ними нельзя получить повреждения или пораниться. По сравнению с другими инструментами для резки профнастила ножницы обладают следующими преимуществами:

  • They do not damage the protective polymer coating of the profiled sheet, so that the corrosion resistance and the durability of the material are not reduced.
  • They can cut decking across the waves without fear of damaging the material.
  • Using scissors, it is easy to make curved cuts that you can’t make with a hacksaw.

Hobbies

For receiving a figured section on a professional flooring which cannot be made by means of a hacksaw, use a fret saw. Hand tools are used with a small amount of work, and cutting a large amount of material is performed using an electric tool. Jigsaw cutting is faster than scissors or a hacksaw, but slower than a grinder. This tool has disadvantages:

  • It is suitable not for all brands of a professional flooring. Using the jigsaw, you can cut the material if the wave height is from 25 mm.
  • The jigsaw is not suitable for longitudinal cuts of great length, the work is long and inconvenient.

Note! When using a jigsaw, cutting is performed at high speeds, due to which the polymer coating on the edges of the incision burns out, exposing the metal. To prevent the formation of corrosion in these places, the edges are treated with a special primer or paint.

Many inexperienced craftsmen are wondering how to cut decking so as not to be afraid to damage the material. Roof covering of profiled sheet, as a rule, has a thin polymer coating that can be damaged even by a slight abrasive effect or high temperature. To reduce the negative effect of cutting, you need to treat the edges with a primer, mastic or paint.
