Chimneys are necessary for the removal of gases arising in the process of burning fuel. They contribute to the creation of traction, which increases the efficiency of the heating system. The main quality requirement is tightness that prevents carbon monoxide leakage. For its devices are used durable materials resistant to acid and high temperature. One of the most reliable and popular models has become a stainless steel pipe. The universal system is compatible with any kind of boilers and fireplaces, it is placed inside and outside the building, the installation of stainless steel chimney is simple and affordable.

Varieties

Chimney elements

Chimney mounting kits are manufactured in two types:

  1. Single-wall or mono-system - a pipe from a welded sheet of steel, without insulation. This design is affordable, but limited to installation indoors. The design can be fixed inside the brick chimney. Single-layer metal is limited in application temperature up to 450 degrees. Corrugated stainless steel also applies to single-layer systems, it is advisable to use it on the curved sections of the channel.
  2. Sandwich pipe consisting of two metal contours separated by a layer of basalt fiber. Heat resistant insulation provides good thermal insulation and contributes to improving the security of the entire system. Such a chimney is universal - it is mounted indoors and outdoors. The thickness of the insulation is 30-100 mm, chosen depending on the winter temperature in the region.

Note! Systems are made of steel of various grades; its properties and scope are influenced by the percentage of impurities of chromium, nickel, titanium, molybdenum and other metals. All these elements form alloys characterized by various resistance to acids and high temperature.

  • AISI 409 - contains 10–12% chromium, stabilization with titanium adds heat resistance and corrosion resistance, the metal is well welded, forms a strong hermetic seam. Used for solid fuel appliances.
  • AISI 430 - differs little resistance to aggressive environment, is used for the manufacture of the outer casing for the sandwich pipe.
  • AISI 321 - the alloy is designed for use at high temperatures from 600 to 800 degrees, the chromium content is 17–19%, and nickel - 9–11% gives the material flexibility and corrosion resistance.
  • AISI 316 - is composed of an additive of nickel and molybdenum, these metals significantly increase resistance to acid and heat, the material is used for the production of components for liquid fuel boilers.
  • AISI 309 is a heat-resistant stainless steel with a high chromium content (22–24%), operating temperature up to 900 ° C.
  • AISI 304– repeats the characteristics of the brand 316, but contains less dopants, therefore costs less.
  • AISI 310S - differs in heat resistance up to 1 thousand degrees and high degree of resistance to corrosion, has the long term of operation.

Advantages and disadvantages

Stainless steel chimney installed

Stainless steel chimney systems meet all the requirements for safe and reliable channels for the discharge of combustion products:

  • on a smooth surface settles the minimum amount of combustion products;
  • resistant to acidic compounds formed from combustion products;
  • the weight of the structure does not require a separate foundation, in contrast to the ceramic system;
  • high degree of tightness;
  • modular system simplifies installation;
  • The use of sandwich pipes ensures fire safety.
Single tube design is heated to a high temperature

Single tube design is heated to a high temperature

Equipment

Metal chimney device

Stainless steel chimney consists of several modules that are connected in a certain sequence. The kit includes:

  • tees installed in the connection of several elements;
  • straight pipe length from 0.33 to 1 m;
  • knee, reversing, with an angle of 45 °;
  • 90 ° outlet for connecting the outlet nozzle and the chimney system;
  • condensate collection tank;
  • element for auditing and cleaning;
  • cap with cap;
  • fasteners.

Location Rules

Rooftop location

When designing the installation of such systems for the discharge of combustion products, they take into account the standards stipulated by the technical standards:

  • The channel exit on the roof, located on a flat roof or 1.5 m from the ridge, must have a height of at least 0.5 m.
  • The chimney, located at a distance of 1.5–3 m from the ridge, reaches its level.
  • The edge of the pipe, located at a distance of more than 3 m from the ridge, is flush with the line, which is 10 ° from the horizon of the ridge line.
  • The minimum height of the chimney is 5 m, the maximum length of the horizontal section is 1 m.
  • The thickness of the channel walls for solid fuel boilers is 1 mm;
  • liquid fuel - 0.8 mm; 0.5–0.6 mm is enough for gas appliances.
  • Construction joints do not fall on the floor.
  • The passage through the roof of the sandwich pipe has a gap of 13 cm, through the overlap - 20 cm.
  • The permissible number of turns of the smoke exhaust channels is 3. The diameter of the pipe is not less than that of the outlet nozzle.

Installation

Chimney passing through the ceiling

Stainless steel parts are sold in a protective film, it must be removed before installation. The chimney is installed from the bottom upwards from the heater. It is possible to increase the reliability and tightness of the joints using a special sealant designed for use at temperatures up to 1000 ° C.

Chimney passes through the wall

Note! Steel chimney is placed inside or outside the building. The second method is preferable, since the construction does not take away free space, and it is not necessary to equip the passages through the ceiling and the roof.

  1. On the inner surface of the tee, in the lower part of which there is a condensate tank, a heat-resistant sealant is applied, which has been aged for 12 hours at + 20 ° C.
  2. The element is put on the radiator outlet pipe, for strength the joint is additionally secured with a clamp. In this section, the pipes are joined “by smoke” - the next one is put on the previous one so that the products of combustion exit without obstacles. In all vertical sections, the connection is made “by condensate” - the upper pipe is inserted into the lower one so that moisture flows along the walls.
  3. The tee is attached to the wall with a bracket, all the joints are pre-treated inside with a sealant, and outside they are fixed with clamps.
  4. A special element for revision is installed in the lower part, its opening is closed by a door. A straight section is attached to the tee, the top of which is fitted with a damper.
  5. Further, the system rises to the height of the ceiling. Fastening to the wall is done every 2 m.
  7. For external installation, a sandwich pipe is used, the horizontal section from the boiler to the chimney should not exceed 1 m.
  8. The assembly begins with a tee, which has a drain for condensate and revision. The plots are connected with the entry of the upper into the lower one and fastened with metal clamps. Fastening to the wall is carried out with brackets with an interval of 1.5 m. The upper cut is closed by a chimney with a protective cap.

The assembly of the external or internal smoke exhaust duct from stainless steel is carried out according to the scheme, it is important to securely fix the elements in order to prevent gas leakage.
