Roof

By the term "roofing material" builders mean a group of roofing roll materials obtained by impregnating dense cardboard with a mixture of low-melting bitumen followed by a layer of refractory bitumen and mineral sprinkling. However, the technical characteristics and method of installation of this material, which requires heating with a gas burner, do not allow it to be used on roofs with a wooden truss frame. During use, the bituminous roofing was improved, and the result of this evolution was a self-adhesive material based on roofing material.

Composition

Self-adhesive material on a bitumen base, used to create roofing and waterproofing, took only the production method from its more primitive counterpart. It is made of more advanced, improved components, so that the technical characteristics of roofing material with a sticky lower layer greatly exceed the usual build-up. Roofing material is produced by layering resinous impregnations, which are obtained during the processing of oil, on the base. The structure of this material is as follows:

The structure of the adhesive coating
  1. Booking topping. Roofing material of the self-adhesive type is covered with coarse-grained mineral powder. Some brands sprinkle with colored granules, which gives the roof an attractive appearance. Sprinkling of any color except black and gray reflects 40% of the sun's radiation, so it casts less on. He calls this coating because it protects the roofing material from mechanical effects, moisture and ultraviolet penetration.
  2. Modified refractory bitumen. To improve the technical characteristics of the roofing material, a mixture of bitumen with synthetic rubbers is applied to the surface, increasing the waterproofing qualities of the coating.
  3. Polyester base. Self-adhesive roofing material is produced on the basis of polyester fabric, and not roofing paperboard, as usual. It consists of compounds of high-molecular compounds of polybasic acids. Polyester fabric has flexibility and flexibility, so that the roofing material becomes more durable.
  4. The bottom layer of modified bitumen, which is used as an adhesive coating. In the process of installation it is not melted by a gas burner, as it heats up itself under the action of sunlight.
  5. Protective film or foil. So that the roofing material does not stick together in a roll, a protective polyethylene film or aluminum foil is applied on the bottom surface.

Note! The ruberoid used as a lining layer in the roofing cake is produced with a double-sided self-adhesive coating, which simplifies installation and reduces the time spent on work.

Advantages of self-adhesive coating

The price of self-adhesive marks of roofing material is 2-2.5 times higher than the cost of the deposited coating, however, excellent technical characteristics justify the costs. This material has the following properties:

  • Thanks to the ethereal fabric from which the base is made, self-adhesive roofing material is more flexible and durable than the classic overlay marks from roofing paperboard. It is durable and durable.
  • Long service life. Manufacturers promise that the coating of self-adhesive roofing material will last at least 10 years, which is two times longer than the lifetime of the weld marks.
  • Easy installation. No need to use a gas burner simplifies the laying of material on the roof surface. Special equipment is not involved in the installation, so you can do it yourself.
  • Possibility of use on a wooden base. Self-adhesive roofing material is suitable for mounting on a wooden base, since it does not use open fire. Glue, on the lower surface of the roofing material is activated from the heat of solar radiation, so the coating is laid in sunny, dry weather.

Important! Ruberoid with self-adhesive coating is produced in the form of rolls, 1 m wide and 15 m long, each weighing 27-28 kg. This material can be stored vertically or horizontally, without fear of sticking layers.

Material disadvantages

Roofing material is successfully used in private construction, as it is difficult to find a more practical and cheap material. However, the use of this coating has drawbacks that must be considered before starting the installation:

  1. The main disadvantage of roofing material is the flammability of this type of roofing material. It lights up at a temperature of 180-200 degrees, and when burning emits toxic fumes. The bituminous layer under the influence of high temperatures bubbles and explodes with claps, causing injury to others.
  2. To create a reliable waterproofing coating, you have to use 2-7 layers of roofing material laid in an overlap.
  3. Fragility. When exposed to negative temperatures, the ruberoid may eventually crack and cause leakage.

>Сравнивая технические характеристики современных кровельных материалов с рубероидом, строители отмечают, что он не самый долговечный и надежный материал. Однако, нет более простого и быстрого способа перекрыть крышу хозяйственных построек, дачных или садовых домиков.

Installation

Even an inexperienced handyman can do this installation with his own hands; for this, no special skills or tools are needed. It is important to follow the manufacturer's instructions and strictly follow the installation technology:

  1. First of all, inspect the condition of the roof. If the coating has severe damage, swelling, then it should be removed. If it is in satisfactory condition, it can be laid directly on the old base.
  2. The base of the roof must be thoroughly cleaned of debris and dirt. If it is made of concrete, it is treated with bitumen mastic. The crate of wood is treated with an antiseptic composition.
  3. A roll of roofing material is cut into strips, the length of which is equal to the length of the slope, straightened and allowed to lie down. Laying start from the bottom of the slope, placing the material along the slope of the roof.
  4. The bottom film protecting the adhesive layer is carefully separated from the material, and then the roofing material is attached to the base of the roof. Using a rag or trowel, air bubbles are removed from under the cover, patting and smoothing.
  5. The next strip is overlapped to the first 10-15 centimeters to protect the connecting seam from moisture penetration. The next layer is laid in a run to the previous one so that the seams between them do not coincide.
