Roof repair in winter
As a rule, winter is an excellent period to carry out interior decorating. Is it possible to repair the roof in winter? Many doubt it, however, in fact, it is possible to repair the roof during this period, and there are several reasons for this.
For example, in winter it is best to shut off the roof, because there is no rain, and the ambient temperature practically does not change. Even if it suddenly snowed, it is easy to remove with a shovel. Since winter is not the season to repair the roof, all the necessary materials are usually not as expensive as at other times of the year. It is also convenient to warm the roof in winter. But all of the above is not an indicator for any type of roof, since the installation and repair of each of them is significantly different from each other.
Is it possible to cover the roof in winter, at the onset of severe frosts? What is worth considering? It is worth considering the nuances in the repair of different types of roofs, as well as the reasons for which the roof deteriorates.
Reasons for repairing the roof in winter

Most often, the roof is made in the winter due to a number of unexpectedly occurring damage to the roof covering. These may be the following reasons:
- damage to the roof of a metal tile or tile and their fixings;
- damage to the roof of ondulin (or slate);
- violation of the integrity of the bitumen coating;
- deterioration of roof tightness at the joints with pipes;
- lying lies;
- roof sagging;
- roof overhangs are not fixed;
- snow blows in the gap;
- a flow appeared in the roof after the snow had thawed;
- it is better to warm the roof;
- just did not have time to complete certain work before the onset of winter.
As a consequence, the roof may leak, dampness, cold, and other problems will appear in the house. With repairs, it is better not to tighten as much as possible, otherwise there is a chance that the roof will have to be completely blocked.
Most often it is necessary to repair the roof with the following coverage:
- Sheet (metal tile, ondulin, slate).
- Roll roofing.
Consider in brief the features of the repair of each type of roof in winter, taking into account their properties at this time of the year.
Roof Sheet Repair

The metal tile has to be repaired usually due to the fact that the sheets were improperly laid due to non-compliance with the technology when installing the roof. As a result, some of them may be deformed. To replace them, you need to perform a number of steps.
First, the damaged sheet is removed. This is done simply - you just need to unscrew the mounting bolts with which it is bolted to the crate. It may be necessary to temporarily remove the fasteners from the adjacent intact sheet, so that when removing the damaged metal tile, it is not possible to scratch its coating. Then a new sheet is installed in its place and is attached to the crate.
It is important that the new metal does not differ in color from the rest of the roof. If in places where there were old mounts, screws do not hold, it is better to twist them in another place, stepping back a couple of centimeters along the batten board.
If there are scratches on the sheet (a branch fell after the storm, a stone from a high-rise building, etc.), the sheet does not have to be changed, you can just paint over the damaged areas with plain paint. Need a special paint for metal, resistant to certain low temperatures.

Be sure to need insurance - a cable stretched over the roof and a seat belt. Do not interfere with a special bag with tools, from which you can quickly get the right tool.
Before working, the roof must be completely cleaned of ice and snow - only after that you can start work.

Replacing the slate is a little easier because of its smaller dimensions compared to metal tile, so it can easily be carried out even in winter. For asbestos cement sheets are not used screws, and roofing nails. In order to dismantle the cracked sheet, you need to pull out the nails with a nail puller, remove the damaged sheet, put a new one and nail it to the crate.
Note! In order not to split the sheet, nails need to be beaten to the top of the wave and not with all the force.

Ondulin, unlike slate, needs to be laid only at temperatures above zero. If it is urgently necessary to replace part of the roof from Ondulin, then the work on dismantling and mounting the sheets should be carried out very carefully so as not to spoil them. Restrictions on such work - 5? C frost, work with more cold is strictly prohibited. One sheet should be fixed with not less than twenty nails, otherwise it may break and fall down.
Roll roof repair
If you are engaged in the installation of shingles during a hard frost, it may begin to break at a low temperature (about -20? C). Therefore, even if the package says that a certain material can be used at any temperature, you do not need to blindly believe in it. Best of all, if there is no choice and there is no way to wait for repairs until spring, make a temporary tent over the roof, close all the gaps well and use the heaters to create the minimum acceptable temperature for repairs in it, about 5? C heat. True, such a process will be very difficult, and it will cost more, because not every house has an awning and material for the frame, a heater.
If possible, it is best not to repair a soft roof in winter, but to wait for warming.
