Parapet height on a flat roof and its device - video
Flat roof often equip on industrial and commercial buildings, however, recently this design has gained popularity in the construction of private houses. The cost of works on the construction of such overlap is less than the device of a sloping roof. Flat roof is a multi-layer "pie" made of rolled waterproofing materials on a bitumen base, fenced around a small elevation, which builders call the parapet. In this article we will discuss what the minimum height of the parapet is permitted by the SNiP, as well as how and from what make a protective fence.
Device
The parapet of the flat roof is the elevation of the walls above the main level of the roof, it is located along the entire perimeter and performs protective functions. This element is an integral part of the design, the requirements for which are regulated by SNiP II-26-76. Parapet is made of bricks, concrete slabs, gas silicate and other materials. It consists of the following parts:

- Fencing It is an elevation, the height and width of which is determined by the SNiP and the nature of the use of a flat roof. Most often, the fence is carried out using brickwork around the perimeter of the roof of the house. It performs protective functions, protecting the roofing material from damage, and also serves as a barrier that warns people from falling from operated roofing.
- Roof wedge. The device necessary to protect the waterproofing apron parapet flat roof from damage at the junction. It is made using cement mortar or a triangular bar. If timber is used, it is necessarily soaked with fire retardant and antiseptic. The roofing wedge settles down at the junction between the parapet and the roof surface so as to remove the angle of 90 degrees between them.
- Waterproofing apron. Waterproofing apron is called a moisture-proof material that covers the enclosure of a flat roof to protect it from moisture penetration into the thickness of the roofing pie. It is made of lining or outer roofing material and is fixed on top of the parapet or in a specially made groove on it with the help of a pressure plate made of metal.
- Protective visor. Protective visor is worn on the fencing of the roof over the waterproofing apron. It is made of special corrosion resistant steel roofing. The visor is mounted in an overlap or with the help of a folded seam, the second option better protects against leakage, but takes more time. To protect against corrosion, steel elements are coated with a liquid rubber based paint.
Important! According to the requirements of SNiP II-26-76, the commissioning of flat roofs without a protective parapet is not allowed. Protective fencing is required for unexploited and operated roofs. The minimum permissible height of the parapet is 0.45 cm.
Sizes of fencing
A parapet on a flat roof is an obligatory structural element, without which the operation of the structure is not allowed. The height and size of the fence is strictly regulated by building codes, such severe restrictions are explained by safety requirements. The following rules are accepted for different types of roofs:
- Если плоская кровля относится к неэксплуатируемому типу, то есть манипуляции на ней выполняются только в время ремонта и обслуживания со специальной страховкой, в установке парапета необходимости нет. Device ограждения не возбраняется и разрешатся по желанию застройщика согласно проекту.
- In the case when the height of a structure with a flat unexploited roof exceeds 10 m, SNiP II-26-76 requires the installation of a barrier of at least 45-50 cm.
- On the operated roofs of flat type, barriers along the perimeter serve, first of all, to protect people on them from an accidental fall. Therefore, the height of the parapet according to the requirements of the SNiP must be at least 1.2 m. A fence of such a height makes it safer to stay on the roof surface.

Note! Operated roofs are most often used in commercial buildings for organizing observation platforms, summer cafes and recreation areas. The device parapet, whose height exceeds 1.2 m, spoils the review, appearance. In order to protect people from falling without deteriorating the appearance of the structure, the developers go out as follows: a monolithic curb of 0.3-0.5 m in height is constructed, over which metal barriers with horizontal crossbars are mounted.

Fence functions
Although the parapet is considered to be a characteristic feature of a flat roof, it is sometimes installed on sloping roofs. Devices that serve as curbs are mounted during roofing. If quality materials are used for the construction, then the parapet will last for many years before it needs repair. This element performs the following functions:
- Protective. The parapet protects the perimeter of the flat roof, making it more secure. This protection measure is observed not only on the operated roofs, where people are constantly present, but also on those who are not exploited to ensure the safety of repairmen and service personnel. Naturally, to the curbs on the roofs operated SNiP imposes more stringent requirements for height and reliability.
- Protective. Parapets limit the surface of a flat roof, limiting the descent of snow masses and the spontaneous discharge of rainwater. For high-rise buildings, this function of the roof railing is of greater importance, since snow falling from above at high speed can cause serious injuries to passersby. Thanks to the curb, the snow cover melts under the action of the sun's rays on the roof surface and in the form of melt water enters the drain, and then into the storm sewer.
- Aesthetic. Protective fences do not spoil the appearance of the building, they can become a real decoration of the roof. Looking at the buildings of the past century, you can see the parapets, decorated with intricate designs and statues. Current trends in construction put border functionality on the first place, however, metal and metal fences look or forged with the help of forging look even more stylish.

Mounting methods
Parapets on a flat roof are constructed during the erection of the roof, so this task is handled by professional roofers who have access to high-rise work, are familiar with safety regulations. During the installation of barrier elements used insurance. After the completion of the brickwork, you need to tightly equip the junction of the roofing material. This can be done in two ways:
- Over the parapet. The waterproofing material used as a roof covering is put on the parapet and glued to the outside of the wall using molten bitumen mastic. From above on this design put on a protective peak from roofing steel. The metal is coated with a paint that improves its anti-corrosion properties. This method is used for low parapets, the height of which does not exceed 50 cm.
- In the groove. During the laying of the parapet leave a groove at a height of 20-25 cm from the roof surface. After completion of the work, the roofing material is brought into this groove and fixed with a clamping strip made of galvanized steel and self-tapping screws. Seams are waterproofed with sealant or bitumen mastic. This method is suitable if the height of the fence exceeds 0.5 m and does not require the installation of a protective visor made of metal.
Note! The main difficulty in installing a parapet is to ensure tightness at the junction of the roofing. To provide protection against leakage and deterioration of the coating, a roofing wedge is inserted into the corner between the curb and the roof or cast from concrete.
