Mastic for gluing roofing material - cold and hot bitumen
Roofing material among builders is considered the most reliable roofing material among products of low price category. It is made on the basis of durable roofing paper, impregnated with oil bitumen, and then sprinkled with booking crumb. Currently, manufacturers produce several dozen brands of roofing material, which is used to overlap household and industrial buildings, garden and country houses. If you decide to use this material for the device of the roof, you will need mastic for roofing material. In this article we will tell you what kind of composition, what types it is, as well as how it is used.
Mounting technology
Ruberoid refers to the roll roofing materials, it is made on the basis of a special cardboard with a density of 200-420 g / m2 and petroleum bitumen. It is used to create a reliable, durable and durable waterproofing coating, each layer of which increases the protective function of the material. Laying of roofing material is made in 3 main ways:
- Mechanical. Laying and fixing of roofing material with the help of nails is called mechanical. Previously, this technology was popular due to the lack of decent alternatives. However, fixing each layer of material, violating the integrity of the ruberoid, is irrational. This method of fasteners reduces the service life and waterproofing properties.
- Overlays. Laying the roofing material by fusing requires the use of special equipment; it cannot be performed on combustible bases. This technology involves the use of grades of roofing material, on the lower side of which is applied low-melting bitumen, melted by a gas burner during installation.
- Gluing. Laying of roofing material by gluing is done using a special composition, called mastic. Each layer of waterproofing coating is coated with this bituminous substance, and after drying it is securely glued. Currently, this method is considered the most reliable, as a result of it is a seamless, monolithic roof.

Note! The use of home-made bitumen mastic or purchased in the store allows you to get a reliable waterproofing coating that does not let moisture through. Each glued layer of roofing material increases the protective properties and service life of the roofing material.
Mastic Types
Bituminous mastic is an indispensable composition with which the laying of roofing material is performed. It is used to glue the layers of the roofing pie together to form a monolithic, durable, durable waterproofing coating. The price of bitumen mastic is low, however, if desired, it is easy to prepare with your own hands. There are 2 forms of release:
- Cold Cold is called mastic, which retains a liquid state without exposure to high temperature. It is made of petroleum bitumen and solvent, which is used as gasoline, diesel fuel or kerosene. To prepare this composition at home, you need to melt 3 kg of bitumen, allow it to cool to 85 degrees, and then mix with 7 kg of solvent. After drying, this mixture remains in a liquid state. In stores, it is sold in large metal buckets. The price for cold mastic is higher than the hot one, and it is consumed faster, so with its help it is more rational to carry out minor repairs or laying roofing material on the roof with a small area.
- Hot. Hot mastic is made of solid bitumen, which is constantly maintained hot during use. A special container with thick walls is filled with pieces of bitumen by 50-60%, and then gradually heated over low heat, adding structuring additives and oil. Prepare hot mastic longer, and "work out" it needs to have time to freeze. It is used for gluing roofing material on the roofs of a large area, since a significant difference in price compared to cold mastic provides significant savings.
Please note! In the manufacture of mastic with your own hands, you must monitor the temperature and state of the bitumen. If it bubbles and emits yellow smoke, the coking process begins. The use of such bitumen is not recommended. If the optimum temperature is maintained, the bitumen will fizz slightly, emitting gray smoke.
The composition and use of mastic
The composition of bitumen mastic is simple, it consists of bitumen, solvents and various structuring additives (chalk, asbestos, peat crumb, talc). It is used for the installation of roofing material by gluing. There are 2 types of mastic, cold and hot, which are distinguished by price, composition and release form. They are considered as a multifunctional tool for the following tasks:
- Gluing of ruberoid. To glue this material onto the base of the roof, each layer is coated with bitumen mastic, pressing it against the previous one, smoothing, eliminating bubbles. After drying of the composition, the roofing material securely seizes, creating a seamless waterproofing coating.
- Priming base. With the help of bitumen mastic, they often ground the base of the roof in order to improve the adhesion between materials in order to lay the built-up roofing material. This operation is considered mandatory if the coating is laid on a concrete base, as it has a high porosity and surface roughness.
- Repair of a ruberoid roof. Bitumen mastic is used for spot repair of small cracks and mechanical damage appearing on the roofing material during the operation. To do this, the defects on the surface of the roofing material are filled with molten mastic.
- Obmazochnaya waterproofing. Bitumen mastic is used for coating waterproofing foundations, walls, pillars and other elements that need protection from moisture.
Important! Mastic on the basis of petroleum bitumen is an additional waterproofing in the roofing pie of the ruberoid coating. With this composition, the layers of material are firmly glued together without the formation of air bubbles, mounds, forming a monolithic, seamless "carpet".
