Installation of aerators on the roof

Roof

Water is a unique solvent, due to which most chemical processes take place. It can both positively and negatively affect some materials, for example, causing them to corrode, so the installation of aerators on the roof is very important, be it from corrugated board, metal tiles, etc.

Why do you need under-roof ventilation?

This is what happens when the attic is not ventilated.

Any housewife who spends time in the kitchen wants to have a fume cupboard installed. This makes it possible to eliminate the spread of various odors throughout the apartment and preserve freshness. But there is another reason why it is important to have a structure of this kind. If you do not ventilate the kitchen or another room, then over time, moisture accumulates and condensation forms, which will inevitably lead to the growth of fungus, deterioration of wallpaper and other unpleasant consequences. In modern homes, more attention is paid to ventilation than in Soviet-era buildings, where the “vent” was in the toilet, in the shower room and in the kitchen.

The scheme of ventilation of the roof

Now imagine what happens under the roof of any house. Most building materials have macropores and are able, to a certain extent, to pass moisture and air. In the process of human life, warm steam is released, which, according to the laws of physics, rises. Having reached the roof, it collides with the cold surface of the coating, which leads to its settling and the formation of water droplets. Besides the fact that such processes occur from within, the liquid can also leak out. This can be a sad consequence of small cracks, technical holes, and loose material. Here are some results of this kind of action:

  • If your roof is made of corrugated metal, metal tiles or other similar materials, then the conclusions about how events will develop further, suggest themselves. We all know what rust is. It is formed due to the oxidation of the metal. Even if there is an anti-corrosion coating, remember that it does not last forever. During the installation process, scratches could form or water could get access to the surface under the attachment points. Further destruction occurs, and the roof begins to flow.
  • The situation is worse if your roof is flat and laid on reinforced concrete slabs. Concrete has macropores and well passes and absorbs water. Usually the top layer is made of water-repellent material. Therefore, rising from the bottom, the steam is trapped and accumulates inside the stove. Next is the destruction of the metal bars of the reinforcement, which leads to a decrease in the strength of the overall structure. In addition, the bituminous layer begins to suffer from internal pressure and in some places swelling can be noticed.
  • Soft coating is no exception in this situation. A vapor barrier layer is laid under it, if the liquid is between this layer and the top coating, then in sunny weather the water begins to expand, increasing the internal pressure. Water will surely find a way out, but at the same time tubercles are formed, through which rain, melt and other liquids can seep through.
  • In a humid environment, mold, pathogenic bacteria and other microorganisms that cause damage to the insulation layer, as well as beams, reproduce perfectly. Calculate how much it will cost to repair after such an impact is easy - just find out how much a new roof costs.
  • You know that to warm a wet room is much more difficult, for this you have to spend more coolant. To heat it, you must first dry it. The same is true for wet roofing. Its thermal efficiency can be reduced almost twice, if time does not remove moisture from under it.

Note! In one day, a person is able to release up to one liter of water into the air, which may remain indoors or settle on windows in the form of condensate.

Awareness of the problem - the beginning of its solution

There are several aerators on the roof.

Exploring the reasons given earlier, you made sure that with the moisture that accumulates, you need to do something. For this purpose, special systems have been developed that guarantee good ventilation of the attic. But before installing the aerators on the roof, it is necessary to deal with their types. Of the two main emit:

  1. Active - aerators that have a built-in electric motor with a fan, which provides forced blowing, when necessary, also may not have an engine in the design, but there may be a turbine on its upper part, which is unwound from the blowing wind flow, and not from the difference pressure in the under roof and roof space, as some believe.
  2. Passive - those that provide airing due to natural air circulation.

Active are usually used in areas where the air temperature does not drop below zero or only in cold rooms. They have a deep recessed fitting that often connects to the general ventilation system. If it functions at a temperature below zero, then condensate will certainly form, and it can also quickly erode the entire warm air gap. This does not suit us, so we will focus on the passive ones, among which there are subspecies:

  • ventilation belt;
  • ridge aerator;
  • crest overhang;
  • fungal aerator.

The price for products of this kind is in the range of 300 to 4000 rubles.

Note! The amount of air blown out should be equal to the volume of incoming air, otherwise warm air from the rooms will be consumed. Therefore, you need to think about the system of spotlights.

Installing a ridge aerator Soft roof aerator

Before proceeding to the direct installation, it is important to choose just such an aerator that will suit you here are some tips:

  • Pick a deflector that will match the overall color range. It will not create a confusion and attract too much attention to individual details.
  • The production material can be plastic, stainless steel and aluminum. These materials are corrosion resistant and will last a long time. Do not settle for the usual metal, because over time they will have to be replaced.
  • Consider the installation angle. Usually it is listed on the package. If you do not comply with it, then you will get more problems than good.

The scheme and principle of installation of aerators on a soft roof is almost the same as mounting on other types of surfaces. It is better to do this kind of work when laying the roof, but there will be no problems if this is done later. Consider a few practical guidelines.

  • Do not hurry! You can make a lot of holes, but it will be very difficult to return everything back. Inspect the roof from the inside, assess the condition of the insulation, and if there is mold or other damage, replace it. It is easier to do, as yet nothing is revealed.
  • Classic aerator consists of a pipe, deflector and skirt. Now you can make a hole that will exactly match the outer diameter of the nozzle - this will give the opportunity to prevent the presence of excess gaps. Simply attach the pipe and circle it around the contour or use any blank of the appropriate diameter.
  • To the pipe is not loosened, it must be properly secured. Insert it into the hole and think for what size it will be inside, check the box. Now, from the base to this mark, grease it with special glue and re-insert it.
  • Take the sealant and walk in places where gaps could form.
  • Now put on your skirt. It additionally closes the junction and protects against leakage. Over its entire area, fasten it with screws. It is better to use galvanized with a wide bonnet, this will allow to press it better and eliminate their rusting.
  • Strengthen the deflector.
  • Once again, inspect the structure from all sides, if necessary, go around with sealant.

Now you have complete information not only about what is important to do, but why it should be done. Installation of aerators is not a simple publicity stunt or the desire of companies to sell something, it is a guarantee that your roof and the building as a whole will always be in good and healthy condition.
