For each motorist garage - a sacred place where you can hide from the weather and theft of the faithful "horse", if necessary, repair, replace something. This building performs practical functions, so it is attached to the house or erect a detached rectangular box. To save time and money, simple but effective technologies and materials are used for construction. Most garage boxes are provided with a flat or lean-to roof, which is easily and inexpensively waterproofed with your own hands using roofing material.

Material characteristics

Roofing material is a build-up roofing material, which is made on the basis of roofing paperboard and bitumen impregnation. It is produced in the form of rolls with a width of 15 m, a length of 15 m. It is a durable, inexpensive and easily laid material that is used for the roof of a garage and other outbuildings. Roofing material can cover the roof of any shape and slope. To create a durable waterproofing coating, it is laid in several layers in a run, heating with a gas torch and gluing to the slope. In work use two types of roofing material:

• Lining. To determine that before you lining roofing material, pay attention to the marking of the roll, it must begin with the letters "RP". To cover the roof requires laying 1-2 layers of this type of material. For the production of lining roofing material using a thinner cardboard and small dressing, so it is cheaper than roofing.

Builders claim that more than 80% of garages and outbuildings in Russia are covered with roofing paper. Responding to high demand, manufacturers are introducing new brands of fiberglass-based material with improved performance characteristics. This material remains the most practical way to isolate the roof from precipitation due to the following qualities:

1. High degree of waterproofing. Roofing material perfectly protects the roof from moisture, as it contains bitumen impregnation.
2. Low price. The cost of covering 1 square meter of roofing with ruberoid is 200-300 rubles, which is 2 times less than the price of a roof made of corrugated board, tile or ondulin.
3. Easy installation. For laying of roofing material on the roof does not need to hire workers, due to this, the cost of building a garage is reduced.
4. Versatility. The overlayed roofing material based on bitumen is suitable for mounting on various types of roofing with any angle of slope.

Note! The minus of bitumen-based roofing is the flammability of this material. And in order to achieve reliable waterproofing, you have to lay roofing material in 2-4 layers.

Preparatory stage of work

The advantage of roofing material is that it can be put on top of the old roofing or on the cleaned concrete base. In order to properly cover the roof of the garage with the deposited material with your own hands, you must first prepare the installation site:

• The first builders inspect the roof of the garage and evaluate. If it is in a satisfactory condition, then the laying is performed by the second layer. If the coating has significant damage, it bubbles, it must be dismantled.
• Dismantling the old roof is carried out to check the condition of the concrete base. If necessary, the gap in it is sealed with a viscous cement mortar.
• The surface of the roof is cleaned of debris and dirt using a broom. After that, the roof is left to dry. In dry, warm weather, it dries out naturally in 1-2 days, to speed up the process a building dryer is used.
• A primer or bitumen mastic is applied to the roof with a roller or a wide brush. To ensure that the coating is even, the substrate is primed in 2 layers with the obligatory observance of the drying time between applications.

Note! If the old roofing material of the garage is in good condition and it does not need dismantling, you still need to dry the roof before fusing the roofing material. To do this, the old coating in several places is cut with a sharp knife, pressing the accumulated liquid through the slots. In this state, the roof is left for 1-2 days to moisture evaporated.

Installation of the built-up roof

To cover the roofing of the garage roofing material, you need a gas burner, a sharp knife, protective mittens and knack. An experienced master alone can cope with this kind of work; it is better to enlist the help of 1-2 helpers. The styling technology is as follows:

1. Laying start with the bottom of the slope of the garage. As a rule, roofing material is welded across the direction of the slope of the roof.
2. First, the material is fused onto the protruding sides of the roof, if they are present. To do this, cut off the roll strips of appropriate width and, heating them with a torch, are glued to the sides with a slight overlap.
3. A roll of roofing material is placed at the edge of the roof so that it is convenient to unwind it forward. First, a gas torch warms up the concrete base of the roof. It is important that the flame of the burner was smooth, not sparkling. Then heat the lower surface of the ruberoid, tightly pressed to the base and smooth clapping movements using a rag.
4. When heated, the roofing material may burn from the edges, so do not hold it there for a long time, pay more attention to the middle. In order not to melt a hole in the material, do not hold the flame too close.
5. The next strip of roofing material overlapped to the first. To protect the junction from moisture penetration, 10-20 cm is enough.
6. After the installation of the first layer, proceed to the installation of the second. To the joints between the bands do not coincide, they are laid in the gap. For this, the first strip is cut in half.

Important! Manufacturers of roofing material recommend mounting in warm weather. The higher the air temperature, the easier it is to melt the bitumen. It is not recommended to lay the roof during rain and snow, as the moisture that has got on the foundation will be absorbed.

Subject to compliance with the technology of laying ruberoid with their own hands, the use of quality material and good preparation of the base, the build-up coating will last 20-25 years, preventing the penetration of moisture into the garage.
