How to make a round roof

15-04-2018
Roof

Modern construction is different intricacy and sophistication. You can meet at home, more like locks, and built in the style of high-tech facilities. There are even inverted houses. Of course, such architectural delights are not very common, but, nevertheless, there are precedents. The concept of aesthetics in people is different and therefore very different options are possible.

If the house has a complex multi-faceted or round shape, then a roof of the appropriate shape must be built for it. Therefore, the answer to the question of how to make a round roof is quite relevant and requires consideration along with all the others.

general description

general description

Essentially, there can be no fully round roof. The design of the roof may have a conical or domed shape. Round such a roof can only be called conditionally, since it frames a round building, for example. As a roofing material for such roofs, natural tile or metal is usually used, but recently the so-called soft bitumen-based tile is becoming more and more widespread.

It should also be particularly noted that in order to build a truss system for such a roof, you need to carry out a lot of calculations and drawings. So, you need to have considerable knowledge in the field of higher mathematics and drawing. If there is no such knowledge, then the most optimal way out of the situation will be to seek the services of specialists.

If, however, to describe the truss system, which is equipped with a house with a round roof, then it should be said that it is mounted on the slope. The stiffeners or rafters rest at one end on the ring mauerlat, which fits around the perimeter of the walls of the building, and the second - on the ring girder, which is attached to the central bearing pole. Such runs can be equipped with several, depending on the height of the roof.

Note! The installation of the central pillar will entail an increased load on the ceiling, which should be taken into account when designing and choosing the roofing material.

If it is assumed that the future roof will have a dome shape, then the rafters must have the shape of arches, which are also attached with one edge to the base on the wall and the second to the ring support mounted at the top of the central pole.

Conical roof

Conical roof

In order to better understand the essence of the process of manufacturing a cone-shaped roof, it is necessary to consider in more detail the technology of its production.

  • First of all, waterproofing is placed under the mauerlat. To do this, you can use the familiar and familiar ruberoid.
  • After its installation, the mauerlat itself is mounted, as which you can use a wooden bar with a cross section of 150? 150 mm, depending on the length of the rafters. Attached to the wall mauerlat using anchor bolts.
  • After installing the power plate, it is necessary to install a central pillar, which will act as support for the entire truss system. It is attached to the base with the help of supporting slopes made of timber or planks with a thickness of 40 mm. It is worth considering that before installing the carrier column in its upper part, you need to fix the second support ring for the rafters, made of timber.
  • When the pole is installed, you can proceed to the assembly of the truss system itself. For its production is most appropriate to use glued wooden beams. This material is able to withstand quite large mechanical loads, despite the fact that it is available and versatile. Assembling the rafters is to lay them and fix them to the supporting elements. This is done using building corners. The distance between the supporting elements depends on the diameter of the roof, but should not be more than 50 - 70 cm, otherwise the roof system will not be able to perform their support functions.
  • If the height of the roof is more than two meters, then an additional support ring is mounted, which will support the roof. This ring is fixed to the rafters with self-tapping screws or in any other way, and is attached to the post on the struts.
  • After the truss system is ready, you can proceed to further stages of installation. Next is laid waterproofing material. Attach it to the rafter bars and crate can be using a stapler.
  • After waterproofing, you can proceed to the installation of roofing.

As mentioned above, since the truss system of a round roof is a geometrically complex structure, it is best to entrust its design to specialists.

Note! It is better to pay and get high-quality and accurate calculations, than to save money and make a mistake, because of which the roof will flow or even collapse after a while.

Dome roof

Construction of a dome roof

Another option of how to make a roof with a round base, is to build it according to the dome scheme. As in the previous case, at the preparatory stage, it will be necessary to carry out calculations and draw up detailed drawings, which are best entrusted to specialists. This approach will avoid errors in the design. But the construction work itself can be done independently.

It is worth saying that in general terms, the process of making a truss system of a dome roof differs little from that described above, but at the same time it has some peculiarities.

  • First, the waterproofing is laid on the walls.
  • After set and fixed mauerlat.
  • Then a vertical support post is put, on which the second support ring is mounted on top.
  • Then you can go to the installation of rafters. For their manufacture are used wooden arched elements, consisting of several sections. At its one end, the arch is attached to the mauerlat, and the other to the second support ring at the top of the carrier pillar. Such a construction truss system called hanging.
  • Arch rafters should be installed around the pole at a distance of about 70–90 cm from each other.
  • After their installation, a circular crate of unedged board or timber is equipped on their outer area.
  • Waterproofing is laid over the crate and, finally, roofing.

Geodesic dome

Geodesic dome

Another way to manufacture a "round" roof is to install the so-called geodesic dome. This technology is most common in Western countries, in particular the United States, but for the general outlook it is worth becoming familiar with the technology.

So, in general terms, the process of making a truss system according to this technology consists in the fact that triangular elements of the truss system are made from scraps of a bar, which, when joined together, form a rounded base of the roof.

It should be said that the connection of individual elements is carried out using special elements called connectors. In the case of their application, the assembly of the general construction takes place directly on top of the walls of the building. There is also the so-called non-vector-based installation method, in which the individual triangles of the structure are assembled in advance, and their assembly into a single structure occurs later.

It should be noted that the use of this technology allows you to quickly build the necessary design, which will meet all the necessary operational requirements, as well as have a rather interesting and original appearance. It is also impossible not to note the following benefits:

  • In addition, a sufficiently large free space is formed inside such a dome, which can be used, including as a dwelling.
  • This design requires fewer materials than if other technologies were used.
  • The geodesic dome system is not very heavy, which means it will not greatly increase the load on the walls and, therefore, the foundation, which, in turn, will have a positive effect on economy.
  • You also need to highlight the excellent strength characteristics of the structure, allowing to cope with significant snow loads, which is important for residents of the northern regions.
  • Among other things, this roof will have good performance in terms of aerodynamics, which allows the roof to successfully withstand large wind loads.

Bulb roof

Bulb roof scheme

Another option for manufacturing a roof on a building that has a round shape is the device of the so-called bulbous roof. It should be noted that this form of roof is usually used during the construction of churches and its use in private construction is hardly appropriate. However, it should be said that the cases in life are different and no information will be superfluous.

In general, the construction of such a roof occurs by using the slanting technology, that is, the rafter elements are installed and fixed, as if leaning against the supporting pillars, that is, the central pillar and main wall around the perimeter of the walls. The main difference from the other options for the manufacture of truss systems is a very specific form of the rafters themselves, providing the roof with a recognizable appearance.

In order to achieve the required strength indicators, the rafters are additionally strengthened with the help of a complex system of braces and stanchions, which are installed in places of the greatest load.

Concluding the above, we can add that, in principle, it is possible to build a roof, even if it is round, independently, but it is better to entrust the calculations necessary for the correct design of the roof system to specialists. Perhaps this is the main thing. The construction works themselves can be carried out independently, of course, subject to the availability of certain knowledge and practice in carpentry.
