Roof

Despite the wide range of modern roofing materials, roofs of slate remain quite popular design solution used to overlap household or industrial buildings, as well as garden houses. Installation of this inexpensive coating for a single or dual slope roof is quite possible to do it yourself, if you know how the crate is designed for slate. In this article we will describe what the basis for the laying of asbestos cement sheets consists of, how to choose the dimensions of the slats and the distance between them in order to get a solid and durable construction.

Device and species

Installation of a single or dual slate roof begins with the organization of the batten, durable, smooth base, which is fixed to the roofing material. It is a flooring of boards that performs 2 tasks: a uniform distribution of the weight of the finishing coating between the rafters and the support of asbestos cement sheets. There are 2 types of bases:

  • Solid. Mounting of solid siding under slate is performed only for a single-sloped roof with a small inclination of the slope. For its production using processed boards or moisture-resistant plywood, laid in a continuous layer.
  • Sparse. Sparse crate must be made of edged or unedged boards. For this, bars, whose thickness is not less than 25 mm, are laid perpendicular to the rafters. The distance between the boards is the crate step, it depends on the weight of the material and the slope of the slope.

Important! If a flat or wave slate with a reinforced profile, the dimensions of which are larger than usual, is used to make a single-sided or double-sided roof, use bars of 50x50 mm or boards with a section of at least 40 mm.

Material Requirements

A slate crate is an important element of the roofing pie of a single or double slope roof, from which the finishing covering begins. The durability and reliability of the roof depend on the strength and bearing capacity of the base on which the asbestos cement sheets are laid. Therefore, it is recommended to crate out of material that meets the following requirements:

  1. The moisture content of the wood from which the base is being assembled for laying slate sheets should not exceed 12 degrees. Dry wood is less susceptible to rotting and warping.
  2. It is recommended to make the installation of sheathing of hard wood. It is better to make it from the board of coniferous trees (spruce, pine, larch).
  3. The wood from which the frame is made for a single or dual slope roof is necessarily treated with antiseptic preparations that prevent rotting in conditions of high humidity.

Consider that if a building has an increased risk of fire, the boards used to mount the frame with your own hands must also be impregnated with a fire retardant that blocks the spread of fire.

Section Selection

Flat and wave - quite heavy roofing material, the weight of each sheet of which can exceed 25 kg, so it exerts intense pressure on the rafters. In order to evenly distribute the load from this coating, it is necessary to make a solid crate. The cross section of its elements is influenced by the step between the rafters, the size of the asbestos cement sheets and the slope of the roof. Experienced masters recommend following these guidelines:

  • Mounting of the lathing for flooring of slate sheets of standard size is carried out with the help of a bar with a section of 5x5 cm or a cut board 25 mm thick.
  • For battens under slate with a reinforced profile, the length of which is longer than that of a conventional one, bars of 7x7 cm or edged board 4 mm thick are used.

Note! For slate flooring, sparse lathing is almost always used, the pitch of which is 50-60 cm. Organizing a solid foundation using moisture-resistant plywood or OSB is advisable only in cases where the roof has a very small slope, or the construction region is characterized by intense precipitation.

Step selection

The lathing device for slate is determined by the loads it will be subjected to during operation. To correctly determine the cross section and the step between its elements, it is necessary to perform a calculation taking into account the weight of the material, the slope of the roof, the distance between the rafters and the climatic zone. To make a robust design with high bearing capacity, it is necessary to consider the recommendations of the manufacturers:

  1. The step between the bars of the rarefied obreshetka under the wave or flat slate of a standard size should be 50-60 cm.
  2. The step between the bars of the rarefied obreshetki under the slate with a reinforced profile should be 75-80 cm.

Important! The elements of the batten are arranged in such a way that each sheet has at least 3 points of support: one in the middle of the sheet and 2 at the edges. The installation of this design allows you to minimize the internal stress of the material and prevent deformation.
