How to make a chimney for a bath through the wall do it

The furnace is the most important device in the bath, without which it does not fulfill its function. Therefore, connoisseurs of Russian bath traditions often hear controversies about the advantages or disadvantages of this or that placement method and equipment of the heat generating equipment and the place of the chimney outlet. With the proliferation of sandwich pipes, external smoke removal channels have become more popular in Russia. This article will tell you how to get a chimney through the wall with your own hands, observing all fire safety requirements.

Types of chimneys for a bath

The device chimney in the bath - the most important task, the quality of which depends on the safety of the use of this sanitary facility. Therefore, most homeowners hire professional workers, whose qualifications are beyond doubt, to make a smoke exhaust channel. However, this task is quite possible to do it yourself thanks to modern modular stainless steel systems. Depending on where the passage of the pipe to the street is, there are 2 types of chimney:

  • Interior. This term refers to the chimney, which is laid inside the bath and is displayed on the street through the roof. Such a device makes it possible to effectively use the fuel used for the furnace, since the pipe releases heat along its entire length, heating the room. A particular difficulty in the installation of an internal chimney is the passage of a pipe through obstacles. To bring it to the street, you need to make holes in the attic and roof ramp. It’s hard enough to make the seams of the pipe against the roof material with your own hands, so these poorly protected areas cause leakage. External and internal placement of chimney pipes
  • External. The external chimney device is different from the internal one in that this technology involves the passage of a pipe to remove the products of combustion through the wall. During the laying of the smoke removal channel there is only one obstacle, so this method is more suitable for installation with your own hands. In addition, the passage of the pipe through the wall is easier to equip, since it is located vertically and leakage through it is unlikely. To avoid large energy losses, the part of the pipe passing along the street is warmed with the help of heat-resistant material.

Note! The ability to equip an external or internal chimney with their own hands depends on the location of the heater in the bath. To bring the pipe through the wall, the furnace must be located in close proximity to it. If the heating equipment is placed in the center of the room, then it is better to make a passage vertically through the roof.

The advantages of external placement

More recently, the only possible option for placing the chimney was internal. This option allows you to maximize the heat coming from the pipe. However, it has significant drawbacks, the biggest of which is low fire safety and bulkiness. External chimney, the passage of the pipe which is made through the wall has the following advantages:

External chimney with passage through the wall
  1. Compactness. It does not take place inside the bath, so it can be used in the smallest constructions by area. Especially this plus is relevant for brick chimneys, as they take up a lot of space.
  2. Fire safety. In contrast, the placement of the chimney inside the bath is external, according to experts, more fireproof. This quality is very important for structures with such a high risk of fire.
  3. Convenience assembly. Due to the fact that in the process of installation only 1 passage through the wall is equipped, the installation of the external chimney in the bath is done by hand, without resorting to the expensive services of professional craftsmen.

Note! The severe Russian climate is a difficult test for external ones, since a big difference between the external and internal temperature in the pipe is the cause of condensate. When removing the pipe through the wall, most of the chimney is laid outside the bath, so the efficiency of the furnace decreases, and fuel consumption increases. To remove these negative aspects characteristic of external smoke removal channels, they perform thermal insulation or use special sandwich systems.

Chimneys, the passage of which is performed through the wall have a non-vertical configuration, as they are laid with 1-2 turns. Such a device reduces the force of thrust inside the pipe, interfering with the normal operation of the furnace. To avoid such a situation, for the installation of their own hands use pipes of larger diameter.

Requirements for external chimneys

Safety of the use of the bath depends on the installation of the chimney, as poor installation of this element of the heating system according to the statistics of the Ministry of Emergency Situations is one of the most frequent causes of fires, as well as carbon monoxide poisoning. The following requirements are imposed on external smoke removal channels:

  • The passage of the pipe through the wall of the external smoke removal channel is placed at a height of 1-1.5 m above ground level or higher. Connection of the sauna stove to the external chimney
  • The vertical section of the chimney is located at a distance of at least 1.5 m from the outer wall and the edge of the roof overhang of the bath. The distance from the external chimney pipe to the neighboring house should not be less than 1.5-3 m.
  • When installing an external chimney, no more than 3 turns of the pipe are allowed, but vertical placement is more efficient.
  • The total length of the horizontal pipe sections, which does not affect the thrust force inside the chimney, is no more than 1 m.
  • It is not allowed to exit the chimney pipe through the wall in places where skylights, balconies and windows of the second floor are located. It is impossible to display chimney channels in closed loggias, corridors, and entrances.
  • The pipe outlet through the wall is equipped with a fire-resistant material, additionally insulating with a non-combustible insulation.
  • The place of laying the chimney inside the bath is protected with metal sheets that protect the wall material from overheating and fire.
  • It is not allowed to connect to the inlet of the sandwich-tube furnace, the connection is made using single-element stainless steel elements. Dual-circuit systems are used on the outer parts of the smoke removal channel.

Note! When installing by hand, keep in mind that the minimum allowable height of chimneys for stoves operating on solid fuel, which are most often used in the bath, is 5 m.

Installation

The assembly of the external chimney begins after the installation of the heater. Modern modular, consisting of additional elements, it is easy to mount with your own hands, because for this task does not require special tools and professional skills. Assembly perform the following instructions:

  1. Determine the place of laying the channel inside the bath and the place of removal of the pipe through the wall. A sheet metal shield is installed to protect the interior walls from heating. In the places of the passage cut a hole whose size is larger than the diameter of the pipe. Equipment aisle
  2. The chimney is connected to the inlet of the furnace using an adapter, and then the next element of the pipe with a gate is put on. This term refers to the valve, with which you can adjust the force of thrust.
  3. Connecting pipe sections with metal clamps and coating joints with heat-resistant sealant, the chimney is brought to the place of hikes through the wall. To deploy the pipe and lay a horizontal section, apply taps at 45 or 90 degrees.
  4. In the place of the passage of the pipe through the obstacle mount fire-resistant box of asbestos cement or sheet metal. The space between the walls of the duct and the pipe is laid with non-flammable thermal insulating material that does not allow the wall to heat up from the chimney. Removal of the pipe through the wall
  5. After the pipe is brought to the street, an element of the smoke removal channel with a tee is mounted. The bottom of this part has a removable cup that serves to assemble the condensate. It is used to monitor or clean the chimney. Finished pipe
  6. The pipe is inserted with vertical segments to the required height. It is attached to the wall with metal brackets with a pitch of at least 1 m. If the chimney has a great height, then it is fixed on the roof with the help of special stretch marks.

Important! An indicator of the quality of installation is the tightness of the system. Check the correctness of your actions by melting the stove: if the smoke quickly leaves the furnace, you have coped with this task. The appearance of smoke indicates poor-quality assembly, noticing this alarm signal, check all seams and eliminate defects.
