How to insulate the roof of the house from the inside with
Experienced builders know that it is better to think about all the technological issues related to the construction of the roof, at the stage of creating the project of a private wooden house. An accurate construction plan allows high-quality and fast heat insulation of external ramp insulation, if required. In real conditions, it is often necessary to carry out roof insulation from the inside with your own hands after the completion of the roof installation. In this article we will talk about the internal thermal insulation of ramps, how much it costs, and how it is performed.
Features of the device
Internal thermal insulation is the process of warming the roof of a house from the attic with materials that have a low thermal conductivity. This measure of optimization of the temperature regime of a wooden private house is used only if the roofing work has already been performed, since it is impossible to cover the slopes with insulation without dismantling the roofing. The internal method of installation of thermal insulation materials has the following features:
- The minimum thickness of the layer of insulation that allows you to stop heat loss through the ramp is 150 mm. Therefore, the insulation of the roof from the inside reduces the useful area of the roofing room, which is considered a disadvantage when equipping residential penthouses of a private wooden house.
- Insulation for internal thermal insulation of the roof is located directly under the wall covering material, so more vapor penetrates it, saturated with moisture, despite the vapor barrier layer. For this reason, the material becomes wet, losing its insulating properties, and then crushed and deposited.
- Warming the roof from the inside is considered to be a less convenient way, as when installing the thermal insulation material plate, you have to keep it above your head. The difficulty of work significantly increases the prices for internal insulation of the roof of a private wooden house.
- Internal thermal insulation of slopes allows using only the safest materials that do not harm human health during installation and operation. Considering how much an eco-friendly and hypoallergenic heater costs, external thermal insulation would cost 1.5-2 times cheaper.

Note! Thermal insulation materials for warming the roof of a private wooden house are used in combination with waterproofing and vapor insulating membranes or films. Since without protection against the penetration of moisture or steam, they quickly dampen, causing the thermal conductivity to increase, and the effectiveness of thermal insulation sharply decreases. Mansard heated roofs in which these processes take place more intensively, professional builders recommend to make forced ventilation.
Materials
Modern construction market has hundreds of different types of heaters, the cost and performance characteristics are significantly different. For the equipment of thermal insulation of the roof of a private house made of wood, vapor-permeable, moisture-proof and non-combustible materials with low thermal conductivity are suitable. The following types of insulation are most commonly used:
- Mineral wool. Fibrous material produced in the form of rolls, mats or plates, based on the composition of which are the threads of glass, gabbro-basalt or slags. Low cost, resistance to fire, efficiency and ease of installation makes these heaters the most convenient to do the job yourself. The only drawback is that small particles that fall on the skin, in the respiratory tract, on the mucous membranes, cause severe irritation. Therefore, the installation is performed in full gear - with goggles, gloves, respirator and robe.
- Styrofoam.
- Polyurethane foam. Polyurethane foam is produced in the form of panels or a liquid mixture, which is foamed using a special installation that supplies carbon dioxide, and in this form is applied to the inner surface of the ramp. Insulation of this type is often used for thermal insulation of the roof, however, it has a significant drawback - full vapor tightness. This property excludes the possibility of using this material for insulation of wooden houses. In addition, due to the use of expensive installation, installation of polyurethane foam with their own hands is rarely performed.
Important! The use inside the premises tightens the requirements for the safety of insulation for the health of the inhabitants of the house. Ecowool is a checked material. It consists of cellulose or flax fiber with the addition of antiseptic substances and flame retardants. Ecowool has thermo-insulating and noise-suppressing characteristics, corresponding to the level of mineral wool.
Mounting methods
The installation of insulating material from the inside is more difficult and longer than outside when the roofing is laid. However, if the roof is ready, then the homeowner is left with no other choice. Insulation, vapor barrier, construction stapler, sharp knife, marker, wooden slats, screwdriver and self-tapping screws. There are two ways of internal thermal insulation:
- Installation between rafters. This method of laying thermal insulating material is used if its thickness is less than or equal to the cross section of the frame's truss foot. To do this, the insulation is cut into strips, the width of which is 2-3 cm longer than the distance between the rafters, and then placed in the niches between them. The disadvantage of this method is that through the elements of the frame cold air penetrates through small gaps into the room.
- Installation on rafters. This option of laying differs from the previous one in that over the first layer of insulation, a second layer is laid, which covers the frame's truss legs. It is used if the thickness of the thermal insulation layer is greater than the cross section of the rafters. To fix the second layer of insulation, perpendicular to the rafter mount frame made of wooden slats or metal profile. With such a two-layer insulation, the efficiency of the material is doubled.
Important! If the slope of the roof slopes is 25 degrees or less, problems may arise with laying insulation between rafters, since the plates under their own weight will simply fall out of the opening. To keep the material on the ramp, it is fixed with slats or fishing line, stretched perpendicular to the rafters in several rows.
