Half-hinged roof do it yourself - construction and roof
When choosing a project for the construction of a private house, they take into account not only the practical side of the issue, but also the aesthetic one, because it will become the “face” of the site. Most often, future homeowners choose, as they say, with their hearts, making decisions depending on what they find attractive and what doesn't. Perhaps this is why the original, unusual half-hinged roof has become so popular.
In response to customer requests, architects and designers are creating more and more projects with a half-hipped roof, which is also called the Dutch one. Having extensive experience in private housing, they explain their choice not only by its aesthetics, but also by high functionality, which will be appreciated by residents of regions with a harsh, windy climate. Under what conditions to opt for such a design and how is the process of its construction with your own hands read in a specially prepared material.
Design features
The construction of the semi-hinged roof cannot be called simple either in design or in assembly with one's own hands, since it is a cocktail of positive qualities of a simple dual-slope and hip-roofed, hipped roof. If we talk about appearance, then in the form of gables it resembles a trapezoid, which is formed by hip elements, cutting off the apex of the triangle. Due to its structure, the half-folded gable roof has several advantages:
- Streamlined shape. Due to the absence of sharp corners, the half-folded roof has excellent resistance to wind load, which is a significant plus in regions with constant strong winds, when building in open areas, in mountainous regions.
- Rational use of attic space. The frame of the half-hinged roof allows you to equip a spacious utility room for seasonal storage of things or even a living room, not inferior in comfort to the first floor.
- High variability. By changing the slope of the slopes, the architects create roofs with a unique design, adapted to the conditions of almost any region of our country.
- Original look. Where prevail mainly triangular duo-pitch, half-rolled roof on their background looks like a new word in private construction.
Possible difficulties
The interest in building a half-gallon roof with your own hands is highly commendable, but you must understand that it is only for professional roofers. You can take part in it personally, you can do it yourself, if you work under the guidance of an experienced master who will draw up a drawing. During the preparation and installation you may experience the following difficulties:
- Large consumption of building materials. Due to the complex geometry of the slopes, weighted with hip elements, more roofing material and wood for the roof system will be required, which will affect the cost of the work.
- High level of complexity of work. A number of additional supporting structural elements, edges, and endov make installation difficult for low-skilled workers. So, save on hiring a professional team will not succeed. To start the work will require calculations and drawings.
- Great weight. The complex frame of the roof, which includes a massive roof system and a large area of roofing material, requires a reinforced foundation that can withstand such loads.
Nevertheless, we assure that the information obtained on the half-hilted gable roof will be useful. After reading this article, you can easily “read” the drawings, learn how the installation process should take place, and you can show off to the masters with the knowledge of terms.
Rafter ceiling half-roof system
As already mentioned, the truss system of the roof with hips is difficult to assemble with your own hands, it includes both elements that are in the dual-slope roof and new ones. It is characterized by the following scheme:
- Mauerlat This is a square support beam that serves as the base for roof slopes. It distributes the weight of the roof over the upper surface of the bearing wall and transfers it to the foundation. Unlike dvuhskatnoy roof, in the hip mauerlat set not on two partitions, and four. They also equip the end of the gables that carry the load from the hip elements.
- Racks. Vertical supports of timber, supporting truss legs or skate, eliminating their deflection under their own weight. Racks are installed on the floor or tightening depending on the type of truss system.
- Sill. This is essentially the same mauerlat, installed on the inner bearing wall. On it establish drains and struts.
- Ridge run. A bar on which ordinary rafter legs connect, the highest point, peak of a roof.
- Slant rafters. Diagonal rafter foot, which depart from the ridge to the corner of the building. They are longer than the rank and file and must withstand a large load, as they are supported by women workers. Therefore, for their manufacture double the cross section of the timber or fasten two boards used for ordinary rafters.
- Ordinary rafters. Rafters from boards of 100х150 mm, one side leaning on the ridge girder, and the other on the mauerlat laid on the external bearing walls. They are installed in a row with a pitch of 60-120 cm, depending on the width of the insulation, and look exactly the same as a dual-sided triangular roof.
- Semi-legs Shorter rafters, the upper part attached to the diagonal, and the bottom - to the power plate.
- Filly. The structure is made of boards smaller than the truss legs of the section, which serve for their formation of a roof overhang and a cornice protecting walls from precipitation and wind.
Types of roof systems
Depending on the layout of the future structure, the rafter system may differ significantly. There are two types:
- Hanging. Such a system implies the absence of bearing partitions inside the frame of the house, which can be used as a support. Therefore, the rafters rely only on the ridge girder and the mauerlat, as if sagging between them. Since the long, massive legs of the half-hinged roof significantly bulge the walls of the house, numerous additional elements are introduced into the truss system: puffs, beams, struts, headstocks.
- Outrageous It is used if a bearing wall is located inside the building (one or more) and can be used as an additional support for the rafters. Bursting load on the roof frame is significantly lower than that of the hanging. Therefore, weighting elements are not required. Even with a minimum set of support elements, the system will be stable and stable.
Roofing craftsmen are advised to use the mounted type of roof system for self-assembly, if possible. So the design of the roof comes out more resistant to external loads, there is more space for the arrangement of the attic.
Assembly sequence
Construction of a half-gumbo roof – сложный, кропотливый процесс, который можно доверить лишь профессионалам. Они монтируют кровлю в следующие последовательности:
- Lay the material on the outer and gable walls, on which the rafters will rest, lay the bed on the inner supporting partition. If we are talking about a wooden house, then fix the mauerlat and the bed with metal brackets, anchor bolts. If the house is built of brick or concrete, then on the upper edge of the walls a screed is constructed - a concrete reinforced belt into which the studs are embedded. Roofing material is laid in several layers as a waterproofing between the support bar and the wall. The distance between the studs is calculated so that they do not coincide with the attachment points of the rafter legs, but are located between them. Please note that it is important not to overdo it with the number of holes in the mauerlate, because each of them reduces its strength.
- Vertical racks are installed on the top of the inner bearing wall, connecting them from above with a ridge girder. The main criterion for the quality of installation is strict adherence to verticality. The angle between each upright and lying down is measured out several times, temporary fixings are used for fixation.
- Install ordinary truss legs, observing a step of 60 or 120 cm. The length of the rafters is taken into account two overhangs, which must be at least 40-50 cm
- Mounted diagonal stitched truss legs: in the upper part of them nailed on the nails, and in the lower fix on the metal corners.
- Lay planners, making in their lower part drank under the power plate. Their length should also include a margin for overhang. To slanting rafters attach rafter semi-legs.
- Install eaves fillies, wind boards, fastenings under a drain chute. Make waterproofing, crate, which provides a flooring scheme of the selected roofing material.
- Roofing material is laid out and laid with an overlap of 10-15 cm between sheets or stripes. Finish the drainage system.
After the completion of outdoor work, go to the internal. For. In order to use the attic space as a living, half-gummed roof must be insulated, its frame is sheathed with decorative material. When the work is completed, you will only need to regularly inspect the roof, monitor its condition, carry out preventive maintenance with your own hands.
