Finishing and filing the eaves of the roof with a

Roof

The roof is the most complex in the device and assembly part of the house structure, which consists of many interrelated elements. For inexperienced craftsmen, it is often the opinion that the construction of a roof is finished with floor covering, but in fact such trifles as installing a drain, finishing of overhangs and ebbs have even more significance. In this article, we will describe how to do the filing of the eaves of the roof with your own hands using profiled steel sheet.

Curtain rod

In civil engineering, the roof project is always designed in such a way that it protrudes slightly beyond the perimeter of the building. The distance from the lower edge of the slope to the wall of the house is called a roof overhang. For building codes, it should be at least 40-50 cm. The roof overhang removes rain and melt water rolling down from the roof to the maximum distance from the wall, protecting it from getting wet. There are 2 types of overhangs:

  • Eaves. Eaves called overhang, which is formed between the lower part of the slope and the side wall of the house.
  • Pediment. The gable overhang is a roof overhang outside the building gable, formed by the truss system or the batten.

Important! Roof eaves are formed by lengthening the frame's rafter legs or with the help of fillies. Mares are called bars, which extend the rafters to get a wider overhang. Since the load on the roof outside the perimeter of the house is small, the fillies are made of boards of smaller cross section, fixed to the rafters with nails or metal bars.

Functions

In the process of arranging the roof after the flooring is finished, the eaves are trimmed with soffits, clapboard, plastic siding or sheeting. Overhangs perform decorative and practical tasks that make them one of the most important elements of the design. The following functions are assigned to them:

  1. Removal of rain and melt water from the surface of the walls. The wide cornice of the roof protects the walls of the house from the ingress of moisture when atmospheric moisture discharges from the slope. Without it, home decoration quickly dampens, cracks or loses an attractive look.
  2. Removal of atmospheric moisture flows beyond the blind area and the foundation. The eaves overhang should divert water streams flowing from the ramp at high speed beyond the blind area in order to protect the foundation from blurring.
  3. Protection of rafters from wetting. The eaves, hemmed with a profiled sheeting or soffits, prevent water from getting onto the roof frame from below, protecting wooden elements of the structure from damage and rotting.
  4. Creating a single, harmonious image of the roof. The decorated cornice makes the house look complete, hiding the unpresentable elements of the rafter frame from prying eyes.

Note! The smaller the slope of the roof, the wider the cornices should be, so that the roof looks proportionally and harmoniously. In addition, the climatic factor influences the width of the overhang. In regions with high rainfall and snowy winters, it is better to make the eaves wider.

Ways of filing

Experienced craftsmen do not recommend leaving the eaves of the roof not sheathed, as in strong winds or oblique rain, water may run down under them, leading to wetting of wooden rafters and gradual rotting of the frame. For filing curtain and gable overhangs use special perforated panels, called soffits, or fit the materials left over from the roof deck. Eaves it is quite possible to sew up a professional flooring, using one of the following methods:

  • Diagonal filing. In this case, professional flooring is attached directly to the bottom surface of fillies or truss legs with the help of starters and self-tapping screws. This method is considered more simple, but it requires more materials. Diagonal filing is performed for roofs with a large slope, but a small length of overhangs. Diagonal filing
  • Horizontal filing. This technology is to create a box, subsequently sheathed profiled or other material. Horizontal filing begins with mounting an additional bar on the wall and mounting the frame made of wood. That method is more complex, however, it allows you to more effectively protect the wall decoration from water. Vertical filing Horizontal filing with the removal to the gable

Professional masters note that finishing the overhangs with the help of profiled sheeting has several advantages. Firstly, the profiled steel sheet with a polymer coating is excellent against corrosion. Secondly, it has high mechanical strength. And, finally, the color of the skin can be matched to the color of the roof to create a single architectural image.

Plating technology

The technology of construction of the roof necessarily includes the filing of eaves. This operation is performed after the roofing covering, in combination with the installation of the drainage system. For finishing of overhangs, the use of profiled sheeting, mounting strips, wooden bars and galvanized self-tapping screws are used. Works are performed in the following sequence:

  1. First, the ends of truss legs or fillies are trimmed in length. It is necessary that the ends of the bars are parallel to the surface of the wall.
  2. At the ends of the lower part of the rafters mounted frontal board. At this point, the most convenient way is to install brackets for fixing the gutter.
  3. A wooden block is fixed to the wall of the house flush with the anchor bolts flush with the frontal board.
  4. Connecting jumpers with a step of 40-60 cm are mounted between the frontal board and the support bar on the wall. At this, the casing assembly is completed.
  5. With the help of guides and screws, profiled sheeting is attached to the frame. It is good if there is a gap between it and the wall, equal to the height of the profile wave required for ventilation.

Note! The only drawback of filing the eaves with a professional flooring is the absence of ventilation holes through which the roof truss frame is ventilated. If the design of the roof implies powerful ventilation, it is better to seal the eaves with the help of special spotlights.
