Copper roofing itself: features of the coating installation
Roofing work is one of the most responsible and complex. Errors made at this stage can bring a lot of problems in the future. However, in addition to the quality of performance of work, the choice of roofing material is of considerable importance. Among other options that are suitable for these purposes, you can find both high-tech modern solutions and time-tested classics. In this article we will look at how to make a copper roof yourself.
Material description

Copper as a roofing material has been used by people for several hundred years. The choice in favor of it is due to very decent performance, among which the most prominent are:
- high mechanical strength;
- resistance to corrosion;
- good thermal conductivity;
- beautiful appearance;
- ecological cleanliness.
However, the material has a number of qualities that can be considered weaknesses. For example, the relatively high price for such a roofing material makes it far from affordable for everyone, and you also need to understand that, like any metallic material, a copper sheet will have a very high noise level.
If the choice in favor of such a roof has already been made, then you should know that it is made, there can be two main ways, namely:
- In the form of tiles.
- Sheet material.
Each of these options has its own installation features and requires separate consideration.
Copper tiles

The main condition for the success of the work is the roof equipment with good waterproofing and ventilation. The fact is that copper is a metal on which water condensate will form when temperature changes, so it is very important that the roof system is well protected from water, but it is also aired.

As for stacking itself, it can be done in several ways, for example, in a checkerboard pattern. It is necessary to begin works with laying of the lower row. Tiles are stacked next to each other and are connected by special locks provided for by their design. The joints are sewn up, that is, one part is crimped around the other. Such a connection ensures maximum tightness, but at the same time, if necessary, it is sufficient to simply disassemble the damaged element and replace it.

Thus, after laying the first row of tile, the second row is stacked and fixed in a checkerboard pattern, and so on. If necessary, individual tiles can be cut with metal scissors. It should be added that special attention should be paid to the places where the roof slopes are adjacent to each other. In these places special elements are mounted.
Sheet material

The second most common version of the manufacture of such a roof is a copper sheet. It should be noted that the device and installation work in this case will be slightly different from the previous one.
Sheets, cut to the desired size, are placed vertically on the slopes of the roof and fastened with special nails in several places. Between the sheets are also connected using seam connections. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor the correctness of their location relative to each other. The joints are crimped with a special tool, after which the snow holders are installed.
During sheet laying, the sheathing step must be taken into account. The most preferable would be the option when the junction will fall on the rafters and sheathing. So there will be a much less chance of roof deflection over time.

Copper sheets are best used on roofs that have a large area and a fairly simple structure. If the roof is of complex shape, it is better to use tile. Although the operational characteristics of the options from each other do not differ. As for the differences, we can mention perhaps the time of work, which is somewhat less if the sheets fit. But the appearance of the tile can be called, perhaps, more presentable, although it is a matter of taste.

Despite the fact that the material in question can hardly be called a cheap one, however, this is a fairly practical choice. The fact is that with proper installation, the life of such a roof is almost unlimited. A layer of oxides forms on the surface of copper, which prevents further destruction of the material. In addition, a heating system can be installed on this roof, which will relieve the roof of snow loads, ice formation and icicles.
