How to make a waterproofing floor
To maintain the optimum level of humidity in the room, it is necessary to perform its waterproofing in a timely manner. It is especially important to properly perform work in a room with a high level of humidity, the category of which can include a bathroom. In the article we will describe how to waterproof the floor in an apartment or a private house, and also show a visual video guide.
Do I need waterproofing
- Waterproofing regulates and sets the natural level of humidity in the room.
- Waterproofing prevents excessive moisture from entering the room.
- Waterproofing provides additional protection against external damage to the flooring.
- The material is also used as an additional source of heat preservation in the room.
- Plumbing items protected from damage by waterproofing, have a longer service life.
- A layer of waterproofing can protect the premises from the occurrence and spread of mold and pathogenic bacteria.
Choose the type of material
Currently, there are many tools for waterproofing the floor. To choose the right materials for the work, it is necessary to determine the following criteria:
- Find out the condition of the floor and concrete base.
- What materials are made flooring.
- What building materials were used for the installation of floors.
- How much time you can spend on work.
- Features of the room.
- The cost of work.
- Availability of special tools.
- The area of the room for waterproofing.
Only if all these factors are taken into account, it is possible to choose the best material for waterproofing the floor.
Main types of work
Before starting work, you should find out what are the technologies for waterproofing the floor:
- Method of pasting. Performed with the use of waterproofing materials, rolled up. They are installed on the floor surface, sealed all the cracks, gaps and compacted by applying mastic. As the material for the work, you can use the modified bitumen. It should be reinforced, with the addition of glass cloth and polymers.
- Technology coating. Running waterproofing screed on the floor surface. As a base material, you can use a mixture of bitumen with a solvent and various additives that will increase the strength of the coating. Also, to achieve the best result, the surface can be covered with a layer of mastic.
- Combined technique. It is a combination of roll type work and coating technology. So, the floor surface is sealed with a roll coating. A layer of bitumen is applied on top. Strengthens the surface with a layer of mastic.
- Establish cast coating. This is the best option when working on monolithic grounds. It will require mastic and a special solution. To improve the quality of work and ensure its speed, it is recommended to use mastic with a cold method of application. So you can significantly reduce the cost of the work and accelerate the process of waterproofing.
Types of materials used
Waterproofing of the floor is made using the following materials:
- Use cloths with a thin layer. This type of material is made from polymers. The most commonly used epoxy resin and polyurethane. This layer has a high resistance, is not susceptible to damage and can serve as a decorative coating. However, over time, a complete material change is required. In case of minor damage, we will allow its repair.
- Waxing the floor surface. The quality of waterproofing is much less. Plays more decorative role in the design of the surface than functional.
- Liquid materials. Significantly strengthen the surface of the base. Also have an attractive appearance. In this case, it is necessary to achieve a perfectly flat floor without external damage and cracks. This type of coating provides reliable waterproofing for several decades. Over time, the appearance of the material does not change.
- Work with plaster. This type of material is also able to protect the room from excessive moisture. Among the main nuances of the work it can be noted that it is necessary to apply several layers of material to achieve the best effect.
Surface preparation
How to apply a layer of waterproofing on the floor? To do this, first prepare the floor surface for work. Preparation takes place in several stages:
- Removing old flooring.
- Cleaning and removing debris and dust.
- Surface alignment.
- Elimination and sealing of seams and cracks.
- Surface priming.
Surface coating technology
This method is most effective for protecting the surface from excessive moisture.
The surface is resistant to damage, has a high level of adhesion, is not affected by high temperatures.
There are the following types of materials for work:
- Acrylic blend. It is a water-based coating. Safe for the environment. The material is odorless, non-toxic. It has a high level of strength.
- Polymer material with the addition of cement. One of the most common materials. It can be used as a waterproofing mixture for all types of surfaces.
- Bituminous mixture with the addition of polymers. It has a complex composition. The material is distinguished by a high degree of adhesion to the floor surface and a high level of strength.
- Bitumen solution. Popular material during construction work can be used on hot and cold technologies. Provides maximum level of protection against moisture only during the hot method of application. In the conditions of modern apartments, this process is rather difficult to perform, so preference is given to other types of materials.
Work
- Surface preparation.
- Applying the first layer of waterproofing. The material is best applied with a brush. All layers are superimposed strictly perpendicular to each other.
- Work is carried out from the far corner connecting the floor and the wall. Gradually move to the near edge.
- If there is a pipeline system on the surface, it is necessary to seal it with a rubber seal and cover it with a waterproofing layer.
- Be sure to except the floor cover the walls. The height of the coating on the walls should be at least 15 cm from the floor. In this case, an optimal level of protection against moisture will be achieved.
- The joints formed during operation should be closed with a tape having sealing properties.
- After drying the surface is leveling the floor.
- Primer flooring and application of finishing materials.
Technology sticking waterproofing materials
This type of work includes the following actions:
- Preparation and leveling of the floor surface.
- Applying a layer of mastic to the surface. The optimum layer thickness is 1.5–2 mm.
- Apply a layer of bitumen to the surface.
- Putting adhesive material on the basis.
- Pasting a layer of roll waterproofing. To better secure the material, a layer of coarse sand can be applied to its surface.
- Drawing the subsequent layers of material. This technology involves the use of multi-layer waterproofing surface. Each layer is recommended to glue well.
- Joints, irregularities and cracks resulting from the work should be primed with mastic or a special roll cloth.
- Fastening the material and puttying the floor surface.
- To increase the waterproofing properties on top you can apply a layer of bitumen.
- Surface leveling and coating with decorative materials.
Waterproofing mixture
If you do not have the necessary materials for waterproofing the floor, you can make them.
To do this you will need the following materials:
- Pure water.
- Cement.
- Knitting components. It can be liquid glass, bitumen, quartz sand with chemical additives.
- Polyethylene film.
Completing of the work:
- Mixture should be diluted in the following proportions: 1 part water, 2 parts cement, 2 parts binding agents. Apply the first layer of the mixture to a well-prepared and dried base.
- Allow 15–20 minutes for the mixture to dry.
- Apply another 4 coats of the mixture. Each layer should also dry well.
- After completion of work, the surface should be moistened every 3 hours.
- After 2 days, the finished surface must be covered with a layer of plastic film.
To waterproof the floor in the building can be quite independently. The technology of the work does not require a certain knowledge and skills. By protecting your home from unwanted moisture, you can significantly increase its life.
