How to lay carpet on the floor

Floor

Of the many floor coverings, carpet is the softest and most pleasant to the touch. The range of this coating is quite extensive: wool, polypropylene, tufted, woven, nylon, acrylic, needle-punched, with a long, medium or short pile. And there are several ways of laying this coating.

Despite the apparent ease, not many people know how to lay carpet on the floor, and most importantly, how to do it. Laying carpet does not require special preparation. It is allowed to lay on a wooden floor, on concrete or on linoleum, even on parquet. However, the same conditions are:

  • clean, even, dry and firm base;
  • acclimatization of the carpet itself - within 24 hours it should be in the room where it will be placed.

Can be laid on a wooden floor

There are free method of laying, glue and stretching.

Free way

Free way

Well suited for rooms with a small area and is the simplest, fastest and most economical.

It is necessary to measure the length and width of the room and arrange the carpet over the entire area with a margin around the perimeter of about 5 cm, so that the carpet goes a little on the walls.

  • Next, the carpet must be smoothed from the center to the periphery with a roller.
  • Cut off any excess with a special or just a sharp knife.
  • The final stage will be fixing the carpet: near the walls - with the help of plinth, and near the doorways use special metal thresholds.

Note! This method of laying carpet has its drawbacks - it is not strong enough. In such rooms you should not use furniture on wheels, a “washing” vacuum cleaner, or move furniture frequently.

Fixing method on double-sided tape

On double-sided tape

Note! This method requires some additional preparation of the floor and is the most common. Width of double-sided adhesive tape can vary from 6 cm to 15 cm.

  1. The floor surface must be thoroughly cleaned and dried.
  2. A double-sided adhesive tape is glued along the perimeter of the entire premises, then with its help a sticky “grid” with a width of squares of about 50 cm is formed on the floor. It is not necessary to remove the protective film from above.
  3. Carpet spread out with a small margin of 5 cm, well aligned, cut off all the excess. Next, one half must be carefully unscrewed, remove the protective film from the double-sided tape and glue the carpet to the floor, repeat the same with the second half.
  4. Install the baseboard.

Bonding

Can stick

The carpet is fixed on the floor with glue. This method is used when carpets are laid on concrete or cement screed. For this type of installation is better to use carpet, made from materials of synthetic origin.

Note! Carpets with jute base are not suitable, since concrete tends to accumulate moisture, and jute is a good absorbent.

When laying the flooring on a concrete base, it is necessary to solve a number of issues:

  • drainage;
  • eliminate any defects and cracks;
  • process concrete with a solution that destroys bacteria and mold;
  • primer the floor.

Styling Features

The procedure for laying the flooring by gluing is similar to the previous method:

  1. spread the carpet on the floor with a small margin, level and trim the excess;
  2. gently unscrew the half of the carpet;
  3. apply a special notched dispenser with glue, after 5–10 minutes a carpet is laid on the dried glue, after it is rolled with a roller;
  4. repeat too with the second half cover.

It is better to apply glue in strips of 50? 70 cm, so it is more convenient and the carpet lies more carefully. It is important not to apply a lot of glue - its excess can tread through the carpet.

How to lay the carpet in parts

If the width of the carpet is insufficient, and you have to lay several strips of flooring, you need to spread the rolls overlap in 5? 7 cm. The junction of the two strips of coating are glued last.

Before sizing at the junction of the halves, with a sharp knife and a ruler, it is necessary to cut through both layers of the coating in one motion to form a smooth, clear, perfect joint. After glue is applied and glued both halves.

Note! In the case of an uneven joint, you can trim the pile from the scraps and hammer it into the gap with the adhesive. In this case, the joint will be tough, but there will be no gaps in the floor.

Double sizing with backing

With substrate

In the form of a substrate used foam, felt, and polyurethane foam. The greater the thickness of such a substrate, the longer the carpet will remain. The most acceptable thickness of the substrate ranges from 5 × 10 mm. The technique of laying carpet with the substrate is similar to gluing, only the substrate is glued first, and then the flooring itself.

Note! This method increases the life of the carpet and improves heat and sound insulation.

Stretching

Gripper

The most progressive method. There are slats along the walls into which nails are driven in at a certain angle. The carpet is stretched on these nails and the surface is perfectly flat. Such work requires special tools.

To lay the flooring yourself is not easy, but possible. This requires desire, patience and skillful hands.
