How to dock linoleum

16-01-2018
Floor

Linoleum is quite popular and unpretentious flooring. But despite the fact that it is different practicality, durability and ease of care for him, over time the joints between the canvases begin to separate and swell. Therefore, when laying and during the repair of the material, it is important to determine how to connect the joints of linoleum correctly.

Methods of matching flooring

Docking methods for flooring

Covering the floor with this material can even inexperienced builder. The process is simple and not very time consuming, you just have to take into account some nuances and subtleties that will help decide how to join the linoleum, so that the seams will end up strong, reliable and aesthetic.

You can glue the edges together with double-sided tape, or with rubber, metal or plastic battens. But scotch very quickly comes into disrepair, and moisture and garbage accumulate under the slats.

It should be stipulated that linoleum is divided into two types according to its characteristic qualities: household (for domestic use) and commercial, which is more suitable for production areas.

Household linoleum is soft and is made exclusively of PVC, has an abrasion resistant structure. Commercial canvas can be made from PVC, and from natural materials: linseed oil, jute, resin, chalk. The width of the linoleum varies from 1.5 to 6 meters. The material goes on sale in rolls, so there is no problem with the length of the piece: how much the customer needs, so much will be cut. But with the width questions may arise: the room has a width larger than the same parameter of the material. Some lay the canvas, not sticking their joint, which after a short time is deformed from falling into the seams of debris and moisture. There are two options to prevent such trouble: hot and cold welding of linoleum. Some points affect the choice of method, namely: the type of linoleum and the complexity of the seam.

Hot welding

Hot welding linoleum

Plain glue will not be able to glue the joints of linoleum for the reason that it is very dense and unyielding material. For him, perfect welding, the type of which will depend only on the type of coating.

  1. Powerful commercial linoleum is best glued by hot welding. If the floor is covered with a simple soft household covering, then this method of gluing can hopelessly spoil it by melting the processing places. For such linoleum should use other ways of joining the edges.
  2. Getting to work by hot welding is possible only after gluing the coating to the floor surface.
  3. Most often, welding is carried out with a building dryer complete with various nozzles. With it, the material is heated to 350-400 degrees. The device is connected to the mains. You will also need a knife, preferably a curved shape, a chisel and welding cord.
  4. The pieces of material fit tightly together. At the junction of the linoleum cloths, you need to cut a slot for the cord, then fill the cord itself with a welding gun. The heated apparatus is pressed into the groove tip, while pressing the start. As a result of quick and correct actions, the cord should instantly be butt-welded all over the web. The resulting seam will not be smooth, therefore, the protruding surpluses should be cut off with an arcuate knife until the welding mass has cooled. After complete cooling, the seam is ground so that it becomes one with the linoleum.

Note! The composition of the material includes a large number of volatile solvents, so when performing welding work it is necessary to organize a permanent ventilation.

Cold welding

Cold welding joint

Cold welding подразумевает склеивание отрезков линолеума специальным клеем двух типов: А и С. Клей А используется для работы с только что уложенным материалом, а С – для полотен уже находящихся в эксплуатации какое-то время.

  • Cold welding клеем типа А.

First of all, the bonding places should be thoroughly cleaned of dirt and dried if water gets into it. For the processing of joints with glue A it is necessary to use adhesive tape to fix the webs. Then the tape is cut with a falsetto (construction) knife, and the incision is very carefully filled with glue that passes through the guide from the tip of the tube. For this purpose, it is better to purchase a wide ribbon, which can not only ensure good fixation, but also protect the rest of the coating. Gloves must be worn when working with glue. The height of the protruding glue strip above the surface should not exceed 4–5 mm. After the gluing procedure, the tape is removed after 10 minutes. The glue is completely dry in 30–40 minutes, after which you can walk on the surface.

  • Cold welding клеем типа С.

In working with glue C tape is not needed, because the consistency of the solution is thick and does not flow. The gluing process is similar to working with glue A.

Note! The disadvantage of this method is that C adhesive is not suitable for a material with a heat-insulating layer or if linoleum is multi-layered, because the joints look very noticeable, and the base partly moves away from the floor or does not stick at all.

  • Cold welding клеем типа Т.

For polyester-based PVC flooring, professionals often use type T cold welding, which is less common than previous methods. T-type adhesive has a consistency that perfectly connects the edges of the new material and has already been in use. It is often used as a base.

Cold welding is an irreplaceable thing in repair work, but one should remember about the chemical activity of the released substances that are very harmful to the human body. Before starting work, you must take personal protective measures: wear gloves and ensure that the room in which the work is performed is aired.

Note! When choosing a direction (along or across) to join the webs, one should take into account the angle of light and the seam size - the shorter the seam, the safer it is. For bonding complex, appliqué seams, cold welding should be used.

Floor finishing is often performed by combining different materials. Given this, linoleum should be docked carefully, carefully, taking into account the characteristics of the product and its appearance.

Compound laminate and linoleum

Metal Poroshek

One house or apartment has several rooms that differ in purpose and therefore have a different floor covering. In modern apartments, the most common combination of laminate and linoleum. Not less often it is necessary to join linoleum and tile. Coatings made using these materials are of high quality, but they need the appropriate design of the joints. This affects both the strength and functionality of the finish, and its aesthetics.

Consider an example when the thickness of linoleum is several times smaller than the thickness of the laminate on the substrate. There are two connection options for this case: single-level and multi-level joints.

  • A single-level joint of various floor materials looks much better than a multi-level one. Under a thinner canvas, in this case - linoleum, lay a layer of dense material, the desired thickness. Builders often use multi-layer plywood for this purpose (No. 3–5). But even a perfectly smooth joint of laminate and linoleum will have to be molded with a molding to protect it from damage and deformation.

Note! The molding is best suited for single-level joints, and is made from aluminum, durable plastic or wood. Aluminum is more durable, despite the skeptical attitude of designers towards it.

  • Multilevel joints are performed when connecting floors with different heights. To connect surfaces of different thickness, it is better to use powders, which are made of plastic. They can be of different shades, which allows you to combine them with any color of the floor covering. If the part is correctly and clearly mounted, the defects of the line of joint of the materials will become imperceptible, and the floor surface will get a beautiful and aesthetic look.

The design of the room affects the shape of the joints of paintings. To design a curved, round, semi-circular or other joint, a special threshold is needed, which can easily take on any shape. Profiles designed for such installation, called flexible or curved.

Such powders basically have rubber and are made of aluminum and plastic. Fastening of parts is done with screws or dowels. In the process, the elements are adjusted, the mating surfaces are fitted to each other.

There are prefabricated and whole sills. The prefabricated structure consists of a removable cover and fixings. The solid strip has a glue base that ensures a snug fit to the floor.

Methods of fastening of thresholds and slats:

  • Through-fastening involves screwing the strap to the floor, through the through holes in it, using dowels-nails or screws.
  • When performing a secret mounting, the heads of the screws are mounted in the groove, which is located on the back side of the plank, and then, using a hammer, the structure is deposited into the plastic plugs provided in advance.
  • Glue fasteners are mainly used when joining laminate and tile.

Carefully selected decorative docking parts, such as moldings, sills, slats, gently and aesthetically cover the edges of the laminated panels and the edges of the substrate, reliably and accurately fixing the edge of linoleum.

The connection of tiles and linoleum

The connection of tiles and linoleum

When joining pieces of linoleum with each other or with other materials, it is important to keep one thing in mind: linoleum is a material that can change its dimensions under the influence of temperature and humidity, which means that it cannot be fixed tightly. Craftsmen engaged in the finishing of floors and walls are often used in joining materials of various densities to aluminum profiles or powders from a flexible profile with a rubber base. It is only necessary to choose the right color.

Note! Plastic joints and cork gaskets, construction foam and sealant will also help to make the joint invisible and neat.

Cork compensator will allow to keep the size of the joint across the width of the coating. Usually the thickness of the part is 1 cm, but varies up to 5 mm on expansion and contraction. Before installing the cork strip in the joint between the tile and linoleum, it is necessary to carefully measure and align the edges of the coatings. This will allow the compensator to be inside the seam, strictly at the level of tile and linoleum.

You can connect these two materials without the use of powders. The method is a bit more complicated than the others, but quite effective. Tile and linoleum in the implementation of such compounds are stacked at the same height. Linoleum goes a little on the tile. After the adhesive composition of both materials hardens, you need to make a cardboard template that repeats the shape of the joint. On the surface of the linoleum is a line made strictly according to the template attached to his canvas, which lies on top of the tile. Excess material is trimmed. With the tile we make the same actions. Fixing the linoleum when laying adhesive composition, it is desirable to leave the edge of the material free from it. This is necessary for the subsequent sawing of the tile along the line delineated by the pattern. Removing the excess tile, we finish laying the linoleum, which should be glued to the floor surface at a distance of 15 cm from the tile. This is done without fail, regardless of the method of connection. Sometimes silicone is used instead of glue. After drying and hardening, the joints are rubbed, the fixing strength is checked.

A neat and properly executed combined laying of floor coverings will make the floor in the room warm, beautiful and aesthetic.
