Wicker fence of boards: the original fence of your cottage

Wicker fences today - rather a rarity than a common phenomenon. A fence of this kind can be met only in the dacha massif, and even then, mainly as a decorative element. Such a fence is called the "fence" - and it is made of thin branches or a vine.

However, it is quite possible to build wicker fences from boards - ordinary planed! Such a wooden version impresses with its simplicity of manufacture, and such a fence looks very reliable, original and interesting.

What materials do we need to make a wooden wicker fence?

• Planed board;
• Support poles - there are three options: wood, metal, concrete;
• Screws for wood or nails;
• Galvanized mesh.

Preparation for the construction

Like any other undertaking, the construction of a wooden fence will require you to prepare in advance:

• First, the territory to be enclosed is marked up;

Tip! Correctly calculated distance between supports (“step”) is a very responsible and important event. Most often, the pillars are installed at a distance of three meters, but if the supports are too thin, then the “step” should be reduced to 2–2.5 meters.

• In any case, the “step” should be calculated so that both ends of the chosen board could be “wound up” a little beyond the supporting posts.

• The pillars are best to concreted into the ground, as well as during the construction of any solid fence. If the “deaf” surface is too big - excessive “windage” may arise, as experienced builders say - the fence can become loose in the presence of strong winds.
• The bottom line of the fence should begin at a distance of about 10 - 15 cm from the ground. It is along this line that limiters should be installed on all supports. For example, if you have a metal pipe for the fence - it is best to weld a corner, a wooden bar is nailed to a wooden support.

Note! A limiter on the support pillars is required so that the structure does not “slip” lower than necessary during operation.

The rules of "weaving" a wooden fence

• To get a wicker wooden fence for your use, first of all, you need to install a pair of vertical, not particularly wide boards in the span. In the future, the fully assembled fence is held mostly by the tension force of curved boards.
• Just in case, you can secure this “pair” with self-tapping screws.
• It is better to decorate support pillars with inserts-tips.
• The top (last) board should not be interwoven - it is simply nailed (fastened) to the fence posts.

• The lower gap (between the ground and the fence) - is laid brick or stone.
• A wooden fence is painted - braided, as a rule, after installation.

Below is a brief guide on how to make and install a wicker plank fence. This is done in four stages:

The first stage - markup

The markings start at the corner posts.

• The marking starts with the corner posts;
• Then the pegs are hammered;
• A guide thread is drawn, along which intermediate columns are laid - at the same distance from each other (we recommend - 1.3 m).

The second stage - wooden poles (installation)

• To protect the lower part of the supports from rotting, they should be coated with a special impregnation or heated bitumen;
• Build deep pillars - at least a meter;
• The bottom is covered with a layer of sand - we lower the pillar, powder it with gravel or brick battle, from above - a layer of earth and we tamp;
• The top of the column is sawn at an angle: this reduces the effect of precipitation on the end of the wood.

The third stage - installation activities

• The fence is put on poles and braids them - from top to bottom;
• The fence for the fence is fixed on the pillars with screws or galvanized nails;
• Between the ground and the lower edge of the fence we leave a gap - not less than 10 -15 cm.

Increasing the service life of our ready-made fence, we protect it with any of the means available for this:

• enamel paint for exterior work;
• linseed oil;
• varnish;
• impregnation, etc.

You can do all this before installation - a layer of protection is applied twice to dry wood with a brush or roller. In addition, every 2-3 years it is recommended to refresh the protective layer.

As you can see, the manufacture and installation of a wicker fence made of wood is not a difficult process. However, if you decide on such a variant of the fence - the structure will look visually “more expensive” than the amount that constitutes the real price of the material.
