Stair railings - forging combined with wood

Fence

Whenever there is a question about the construction of a staircase, people turn to specialists for help. On the one hand, this is correct, because in order to carry out all installation work, it is necessary to take into account many factors about which the average consumer may not be aware.

On the other hand, you can familiarize yourself with these factors and do everything on your own, saving money on the call of the construction brigade.

Remember - not all stair railings can be installed by yourself

Wrought iron railing

Why do people opt for wrought metal, which is considered not so cheap material?

All this is due to its positive qualities:

  • The most important thing is durability. This factor allows you to compare the metal with other, cheaper materials. Even if its cost is slightly higher, the useful life pays for all initial costs.
  • The next factor that attracts consumer attention to metal products is simple care.. First, you do not need an annual repair of paint and varnish surfaces, and secondly, you can wipe forged rails with anything.
  • The third, decisive factor - the appearance. Agree, in a country house where they adhere to classical styles, it is extremely difficult to come up with something better than a “cold” metal flower framing the steps of the house.

Although there is one drawback - it is impossible to make forged railings yourself; this requires special tools and corresponding materials. That is why the option with metal handrails is so expensive (see also the article What are metal fence stairs).

With regard to the combination of metal and wood - an ideal option, how to make the fence more "warm" and "alive."

Note! Do not forget that it is better to order wooden railing after the staircase is fully installed and adjusted.

Features stair railings

  • The height of the railing, which is installed on the stairs in the house, must be at least 900 mm.
  • The distance between the vertical posts should not be done more than 30 cm. If you have children, then you should reduce it to 20-25 cm.
  • Forged fences are extremely traumatic, which is why framing as a wooden railing helps to soften and make them more “soft”.
  • It is imperative that the metal fence is fixed with a wall or ceiling. Otherwise, the probability of loosening fasteners is high.

Now let's consider the process of self-installation of stairs in a country house.

Phased planning - help in arranging the stairs

First of all, it is necessary to plan all actions in the correct sequence in order not to miss anything. This will help to more clearly understand the essence of the issue and disassemble it most thoroughly. Our instruction is just designed to teach inexperienced builders to install on their own.

Determine the place

Before you make a staircase fence, you need to choose the most optimal place for the stairs. After all, after the end of the construction, it will be extremely difficult to change it to another location, and while building a house at the same time, it is simply impossible.

That is why we advise to consider the following aspects:

  • In a country house an ideal place to install the stairs is a spacious hall. This is only acceptable if there is a high interfloor opening in this room.
  • You can install the stairs in the living room, for example, place it along the wall, but this is not always acceptable from the aesthetic side: not a combination of styles of interior items.
  • If there are problems with free space, then an ideal option is a pivoting or spiral staircase, which takes 2-3 square meters of usable space. Such designs can be placed almost anywhere, even to squeeze between rooms.

This option saves a lot of space.

Note! The location of the staircase should be known during the construction phase of the house, so that all relevant work is done to prepare the site for it.

  • Another solution to the problem with the location of the stairs is to install it outside the house. Thus, there is a need to create a covered staircase, with wall insulation, but it helps to free up space in the house.

Required calculations

The following step, which must be carried out in order to make your own hand-made staircases, is to make all the calculations.

  • First, write down the following indicators: opening length, opening width, floor height, estimated height, width and length of steps. Also be sure to pay attention to the thickness of the overlap.
  • As for the slope of the stairs, the optimal parameters is 30 degrees. You can calculate on your own, according to the ratio of height to the horizontal projection of the stairs 1: 2 or 1: 1.75, but as a result you get an angle from 28 to 40 degrees.

In this case, the angle of the stairs is 45 degrees

  • Do not forget that the minimum distance from any step to a parallel point above it on the ceiling must be at least 2 meters. If you do not comply with this parameter due to the lack of free space, you can increase the angle of inclination to 45 degrees.

Note! There are several parameters that are taken as the norm: first, this is the average step of a person from 570 to 640 mm, and second, the width of the steps is at least 800 mm. The second factor is related to the fact that the stairs were comfortable to walk and carry any objects.

The organization of the opening for the stairs

The next stage, with which we want to introduce you - the device interfloor space.

That he will help make the staircase fence with his own hands as it should be.

  • First of all, it is necessary to preserve the reliability of the ceiling, which will be subjected to installation work. So, for example, the bars for fastening the stairs should get into the capital wall by 8-10 cm. It will not hurt to seal them on top with cement.
  • If the construction of the stairs is carried out in a new house, then it is first necessary to carry out the finishing work of the opening.
  • Also prepare the fasteners on the walls, carry out all installation work related to the installation of columns and support beams.

Important! Use galvanized steel mounting corners to prevent rust from appearing over time.

Stage marking

There are two types of beams that can be used in the construction of stairs:

  • Bowstring - carrier beam, to which the fastening of the steps is carried out by the end part.
  • Kosour - in this case, the stage is placed on the rack above. The price of these types of beams is almost the same.

Various mounting options for steps on a kosour

Depending on what kind of beam you have, you should arrange the steps so that it is comfortable for both an adult and children to walk.

  • The minimum width of the platform should be 200 mm, otherwise it is likely that the foot may slip off accidentally.
  • The minimum step thickness is 50 mm. Try to avoid deflections at the stairs, otherwise the construction will not last long.
  • There should be no gaps between the steps, that is, if you look at the structure from above, it should look like a solid canvas. Of course, to save money, people try to ignore this rule, but there is a high probability that the foot may fall into the void.

Look at the photo, how to properly install steps.

Steps hang over each other

Installation of fencing

And now we proceed directly to how the installation of stair railings is carried out.

  • Originally attached balusters, which are located at the beginning and end of the march.
  • After that, with the necessary indentation, the fastening of intermediate posts is carried out. To do this, stretch the string from the first to the last baluster to sustain the level.
  • When all vertical racks are installed, the railing is fixed.
  • If possible, the fence should be fixed to any wall, or, using a high beam, set in a strut from floor to ceiling.

The location of the racks on one level significantly increases the reliability of the design

Conclusion

As you can see, the installation of stair railings is a process that does not require special expenses and skills (see also the article Forged fences for stairs, their types and advantages). The main thing - a secure mount and the correct sequence of all the work. If you have any doubts, be sure to check out the video in this article to find answers to the questions that appear.
