Roof railing: types and conditions for installation

Fence

Quite often during the construction it is necessary to install systems of a protective type, which are designed to create certain conditions that contribute to improving the level of safety in the operation of certain structures. The most common and responsible of them can be called metal fencing of the roof.

Its purpose is to create a certain barrier, which will serve as a kind of fence for dangerous areas and will be able to stop a broken person.

All about roofing security systems

First of all, it is worth noting that roofing fences are different. They differ in their design, material production and size. All these parameters are directly related to the type of roof and the standards applied in a particular case.

Installation in accordance with GOST

In modern construction, fencing on the roof is mounted according to special State Standards, which were developed in conjunction with the fire safety and labor protection service.

These are the rules that determine the buildings to be installed and which security systems should be used.

  • If the house has a height of more than 7 meters and its roof is flat, then you can use a metal profile roofing barrier on it, which is created from perforated sheets or erected in the form of structural steel structures.. It must have a height of at least 0.9 m and fasten along the entire perimeter. However, this material is suitable only for those buildings where this surface is not used by people.
  • If the flat roof has a special exit for access to systems located on its surface, then a special fence of the operated roof is installed on it. It is made of racks, the distance between which should not be more than a meter, and then they are connected by several rows of transverse elements. The height of the structure should not be less than 1.1 m.
  • Typical cattle roof fences, more than 0.9 m high, are installed on roofs of houses with a height of more than 7 meters to the parapet, and the surface slope is more than 12%. Also, such structures are mounted on buildings with a height of more than 10 meters and the slope of the slope is less than 12%. Such requirements are made by special federal law and the Fire Safety Code.

High pitched railing

  • In buildings where internal drainage is used, the height of the fence on the roof should be at least 1.2 meters. At the same time, 0.6 meter is reserved for the parapet, and the rest of the height is occupied by the lattice design.
  • If the building has a public access to the roof, where additional buildings, evacuation platforms and other elements necessary for operation are located, the roof fencing should be made more than 1.2 meters high.. At the same time, they are framed not only by the perimeter, but also transitional bridges, ladders, separate platforms and even the surfaces of buildings. The same rules apply to balconies, loggias, flight of stairs, open summer platforms and free floors.
  • It should be noted that the height of the roof fencing may be more than these parameters, but not less. In this case, the whole structure should be integral, without breaks and interruptions. It should look like a series of special racks, interconnected by jumpers.

Tip! In the manufacture of conducting roofing work associated with the installation of fences or other security systems, you must use safety belts and ropes. This will prevent the fall from the roof, on which only install protection.

Standard design for pitched roofs

Design

Typical fencing for the roof look like supports made like the letter ā€œLā€, which are attached to the roof along the perimeter at a distance of no more than one meter from each other. They are interconnected by reinforcement or metal cables, in several rows, so that between them is from 20 to 40 cm.

In this case, the mount to the roof must withstand a pressure of more than 0.3 kN / m, so that such a fence can withstand a person sliding down.

Currently, there are many different modifications of this design. However, in all these types, the height of the fencing of the roof of public buildings and administrative buildings is laid in accordance with GOST and SNiP (see the article Fencing the roof of SNiP 21 01 97 for more details). Therefore, when choosing a particular design, you must adhere to these standards.

Tip! You should not make changes to the design of fences or bend racks, even if they interfere with the work. This will significantly reduce the strength and may lead to disruptions in the normal functioning of the protective system.

Material

Before buying fences and installing them, you need to decide on the material to be used. In this case, the most important criterion will be the roof itself. The fact is that some substances interact very poorly with each other, and being nearby in the open air and under the influence of precipitation, such a reaction is greatly enhanced.

That is why the sale can be found universal fencing, which not only does not react with the environment, but the roof itself. It will not rust at the joints, will last much longer and will be much more reliable. However, the price of such a device may be much higher, although if you compare its service life, it turns out that it is actually more economical and more profitable.

Tip! Before you purchase fencing elements, you should consult with a specialist for compatibility of this material with a roof covering. This will help make the right choice and increase the service life.

Safety first

Safety engineering

Working at height and, especially on the pitched roof, it is necessary to comply with all safety requirements:

  • Do not perform work on the same level to avoid injury from a missed tool.
  • You must use a special railing, which is tied safety ropes.
  • All elements of individual safety during high-altitude work must be timely tested, which can be checked on special tags.
  • If you do not have your own fence and fence, then you can use such a service as renting a fence for construction sites. This will prevent access to hazardous areas on the ground, protecting passersby from accidentally dropping tools or mounting elements.

Tip! Do not neglect safety requirements, as this can lead to injury.

Installation

Typically, the installation of fences on the roof is in calm weather.

This is done in order to reduce the risk of a fall from a height, but some experts work even in extreme conditions:

  • First, install the support around the perimeter of the building. At the same time it is necessary to fix them in accordance with the instruction manual or to tie them to strong surfaces. If possible, you can use parapet or armopoyas as a base.
  • Further, the installation manual involves the installation of connecting elements. This is done with the help of special mounts on supports or by welding.
  • Then the structure is coated with a primer and painted if its material is not resistant to oxidation.

Addition

Quite often, on flat roofs, there are various areas for rest or work. To protect them, you can use plastic nets for fencing sports fields (see also the article Plastic fences). They are installed only after all major security systems are securely fastened.

This procedure can be done by hand without the involvement of qualified professionals and the use of safety ropes. It is enough to tighten the mesh around the perimeter and fasten it with the help of special elements that are often supplied together.
