Metal welded fences: simple, reliable and inexpensive

Fence

The simplest fence, welded from a metal rod

Welded metal fence is one of the most popular varieties of enclosing structures. Simplicity in production and installation, high reliability, good performance characteristics - all this ensures the popularity of metal fences produced by welded technology.

Features of the construction of fences

Materials for production

Metal welded fence is a fairly simple structure (see also the article Fence of welded mesh - today we are not talking about a chain-link). As in the case of other types of fences, its basis consists of bearing pillars installed directly in the ground or on a special foundation. The frame (frame) of the fence is fastened to the base, inside of which is placed the so-called filling.

As a rule, for the production of fences of this type used a variety of metal.

Its most popular varieties are:

  • Profile tube. Larger pipes are used for frame elements and supports, and thin (15x15, 20x20 mm, etc.) are used as a fill.
  • Metal corner. It is used to form the perimeter of the sections, as well as for the manufacture of auxiliary parts (horizontal logs, overhead, etc.).
  • Reinforcement bar. This part often performs the function of filling the frame.
  • Steel strip. Used mainly for decoration, since its mechanical characteristics are somewhat inferior to the above types of rolled products.

Billets - rods

All of the above elements are interconnected by gas or electric welding. Also quite popular forged welded fences, which combine classic designs with decorative forged elements (see also the article Forged fences: sketches, designs and manufacturing).

Sketch design with forged parts

Note! Forged parts can be joined as a welded method, and with the help of mechanical connections. In the second case, the place of attachment is often masked by decorative overlays.

Steel is used as the material for the manufacture of all parts of the welded hedge.

To protect the fence from the effects of adverse environmental factors after welding, the metal is covered with a special anti-corrosion composition:

Anticorrosive Bar Treatment

  • The simplest treatment that protects the fence from rust is its stripping, priming and applying a layer of paint for outdoor use.
  • If it is necessary to provide a more effective protection against metal oxidation, the workpiece is subjected to galvanization, after which powder paint is applied. This coating is more stable and durable.

Manufacturing and installation of fences

Among all types of steel fences most often welded sectional metal fences are found. They are a set of prefabricated sections, which are manufactured in industrial conditions, and are assembled directly on your site.

Sections of the fence can be both standard (fixed dimensions and design), and made to the individual size and sketch. The latter, of course, are much more expensive.

The manufacturing process of the section on request is as follows:

  • First, the object spans the dimensions between the supporting pillars.
  • Then, based on the dimensions obtained, a sketch of the fence is formed and approved. If the customer prefers welded forged fences, then the sketch includes decorative elements that will be installed after the installation of the fence.

Note! The sketch should reflect not only the dimensions of the section and its appearance, but also the types of rolled metal used.

Design sections of different types

  • On the welding table, the section frame is first assembled, and then rods and filling pipes are welded to it. If you have the skills to work with the welding machine, this stage can be done with your own hands, but more often it is given “at the mercy of” to specialists with professional equipment.

After the required number of sections is made, they can be installed:

  • To install a sectional fence on the site you must first mount the supporting structures. As supports can be used metal pipes, wooden or concrete pillars, as well as - the construction of brick (see also the article How to install and protect wooden poles for the fence from rotting).

Tip! At the stage of their erection, metal corners are laid in brick supports, to which sections of fences are welded.

Simple fence on metal poles

  • The supports can be installed both in holes specially made in the ground, and in the foundation laid along the entire perimeter of the site. The video instruction posted on the website will help you to master the process of self-installation and concreting of the pillars.
  • Sections of the fence are placed between the supporting pillars. Aligned vertically, horizontally and the plane, and welded either to the supports themselves, or to metal mortgages.

Mechanical installation of the section

  • Separately installed opening elements (gate doors and gates). They are hung on the hinges attached to the supports.

Advantages and disadvantages of metal enclosing structures

pros

The positive qualities of steel fences are determined, first of all, by the properties of the material used:

  • The metal fence is durable, and with proper care (regular updating of the paint) can last 50 years or even longer.
  • If the car for the frame and filling was chosen correctly, then the design will be of considerable strength and reliability. Taking significant dimensions is very difficult to overcome, because it is almost guaranteed to protect your household from the encroachments of outsiders.
  • The use of modern metal processing technologies, as well as the combination of welded and forged elements allow implementing the most original design projects of fences.

Combined fence with brick supports

Minuses

  • The first major drawback is the high price. In this case, the more complex the design, the higher its cost. The most expensive types include variants that combine forged and welded elements, as well as combined fences with brick supports.
  • Also worth noting is the complexity of manufacturing. If the wooden section can be made with little or no problem in a shed or garage, then a suitable table and expensive equipment are needed for a welded metal structure.

And yet, if you want to get yourself a metal fence (about the same as shown in the photo in our article), do not pay attention to these disadvantages. Given the durability and reliability of the metal fence, the money spent on its manufacture and installation is a very profitable investment in the beauty and safety of your site!
