Electromagnetic lock on the gate: selection and installation

When choosing a device to protect your home ownership from unwanted guests, it is worth considering such an option as a magnetic lock on the gate. Such locking systems are most often installed on metal doors in the stairwell, but they are also quite suitable for the gates of a country house.

Below we describe the device of electromagnetic constipation, and also provide some tips for self-installation.

Gate with magnetic locking device

General information about magnetic locks

Design and principle of operation

All electromagnetic locks on the gate work on a single principle:

  • The basis of the device is an electromagnetic coil with a steel core, generating a magnetic field.
  • The core coil is mounted on the top of the wicket frame, and connected to the control device.
  • When voltage is applied to the magnet, a reciprocal metal plate attached to the gate flap is attracted. Most often, stainless steel with a nickel or chromium anti-corrosion coating is used to manufacture the counter strips.

Complete set of the simplest model

By design, magnetic locks are divided into two large groups:

  • Holding - the most common variety. It is these structures that can be installed on gates to fences in private households, as well as in other places (for example, a sectional garage door with a wicket can be equipped with a holding lock). To improve security, you can mount a complex of several holding device around the perimeter of the gate.
  • Shear – более сложные модели. В этих замках магнит обеспечивает не удержание открывающейся створки, а фиксацию язычка замка. Shear устройства являются врезными, и потому использование их при оборудовании ворот в заборах несколько ограничено.

Shear model

Both restraints and shear structures are in most cases marked with the “ML” index, after which a hyphen is used to indicate the effort to open the lock in kilograms. For example, the model ML-100 means that for opening a constipation it is necessary to apply a pullout force of at least 100 kg

The "power" of the castle is one of the decisive factors in its selection. For a wicket, setting up a device with a 150-200 kg separation indicator will be sufficient.

The merits of EM constipation

Constructions of this type are popular for several reasons:

  • They are quite simply mounted and connected, and during operation they are characterized by unpretentiousness and ease of maintenance.
  • The reliability of these schemes is very high, and as a lock on the gate or gate, they quite cope with their duties.
  • The simplicity of device control is another indisputable plus. If you install a remote opening system (its rather high price is more than compensated by convenience), then you can provide access to your territory without leaving your home.

There is only one significant disadvantage, but in some situations it can be critical. The fact is that the electromagnetic lock for the gate requires electricity, and if in your locality electricity shortages occur frequently, then it is worthwhile to install a backup constipation on the gate.

Independent installation

Device installation

As a rule, manufacturers of electromagnetic locking devices supply them with sufficiently detailed installation and connection instructions.

The EM lock installed on the wicket is quite simple. The installation process consists in fixing all the elements on the wicket itself and on the frame, as well as in connecting electrical components to a single system.

Here is an instruction on which almost any of us can install a lock with his own hands:

  • First, install the main part of the lock on the wicket frame. To do this, in the metal frame with a drill we make holes in which we fasten the device with the help of screws.

Mounting scheme

Tip! Holes should be made smaller than the diameter of the metal screw - so we will ensure greater reliability of fixation.

  • Then we fasten the reciprocal bar included in the set on the sash of the gate. The more reliably we attach the “tailgate” - the more efficiently the sash will close.
  • The next part of our work is the installation of a reader. The reader can be installed both on the sash and on the fence itself. To protect the wires from damage from the reader, it is better to pass through the hole hidden behind the case.
  • Separately, we mount the access controller. This part of the construction is responsible for recognizing signals from cards or keys, and automatically turns off the power of the magnetic system when the sash is opened.
  • On the inside of the wicket leaf or the fence itself, a button is installed that opens the lock from the inside.

Note! To improve the reliability of the locking elements, experts recommend installing both the lock itself and the counterpart as close as possible to the sash corner. The displacement of the structure to the center of the blade contributes to the reduction of the wicket holding force.

Connection

When the main structural elements are fixed, you can begin to connect the constipation.

  • For the majority of models of locks on the market, the use of a voltage of 12 volts is typical, so care should be taken of which cable the device will be powered from.

Connection diagram to the controller

  • Wires (they can be included in the set of accessories, and can be purchased separately) are connected to the terminals of the lock and reader. The optimal cable for use is the type VVG-NG 2x1.5.
  • To those parts of the gate, which will receive the wiring, fasten the plastic casing for the cable.

Cable channels

  • The wires are laid in the casing, fix and connect to the supply cable.

Tip! The use of an uninterruptible power supply will significantly increase the efficiency of the device.

Installed device

findings

Simple to install and maintain, fairly compact (as can be seen in the photos given in the article) and reliable electromagnetic shut-off complexes will serve as an excellent protection for your private home. In any case, they are superior to the traditional heck many times! In the presented video in this article you will find additional information on this topic.
