Chess fence

The fence is an integral part of the arrangement of any piece of land. It is difficult to imagine a structure around which a fence would not be located. After all, it makes, for example, a house relatively inaccessible to unwanted guests, gives the whole piece of land a certain personality, and also often harmoniously emphasizes the overall picture of landscape design. The fence displays the style and character of the manor as a whole. For example, a hedge fits perfectly, merging into one, with a garden or a park, and a chess fence gives a touch of comfort and sophistication to almost any area on which a residential building is located.

The modern range of options for fencing is very large, but which one is best suited to a particular site, providing an attractive appearance, is a question that should be given close attention. It all depends on the nature of the fence: an impregnable wall, a decorative fence, or maybe something combined. Concrete, brick, wrought, wood - they all limit the area from the "outside world".

Among the wooden options of the fence can be identified shtaketnik, ranch, ladder and chess. They are in great demand due to the relative ease of installation and practicality. As part of the topic, we will consider a wooden chess fence, which owes its popularity to its beautiful appearance. It should also be noted, and the rather low cost of this type of fence (read also about the main points of the construction of a cinder block fence).

What is he, fence-chess

Chess fence is called so without reason. It looks like a picket fence, in which the planks (boards) are attached to the guides, but unlike the picket fence, the chess board has both sides on the front side. The slats are fixed in a checkerboard pattern on both sides of the beams (guides).

Fence chess

This fence is great for both external fencing, and for the delimitation of the site. Sophisticated appearance, environmental friendliness, ease of installation and maintenance - what else is needed for a private house? It’s easy to install such a fence with your own hands. And if a strap fails, it can be easily replaced.

Another positive feature of this fence is the ability to adjust the clearance between the slats. You decide whether you need a gap between the boards or not.

A wooden fence with a gleam allows people around to look to your yard, thanks to the unusual arrangement of the slats. Each of them is attached to the cross beams at a distance slightly larger than the width of the plank. Thus, there are gaps between the planks located on both sides of the beam, which are not present in the deaf chessboard. This version of the chess fence allows the sun's rays to penetrate the plot, which is important when fencing a vegetable garden or garden (also read the article “Making a Sectional Fence from the Rabits Grid”).

Chess with a gap

A chess fence without a lumen (deaf) does not have gaps between the planks, so it seems completely invisible, but if you look at it at an angle, you will see gaps.

The direction of the planks in the fence determines its name. The main ones are vertical and horizontal chess.

Helpful advice! It is better not to place a horizontal chess board as an external fence, since the location of the slats on it creates a kind of ladder, along which it is very easy to climb the fence.

Chess Fence Installation

Installing a wooden fence is a simple process, but it requires some knowledge. The following instructions will help to cope with this matter personally.

Cleaning the area and mounting supports

  • Clearing the area on which the fence will be installed;
  • We determine the places of extreme supports, dig holes and install columns in them;
  • The depth of the pits determines the height of the fence. The more massive the fence, the deeper the pits should be made under the columns and the stronger it is to fix the supports in the ground;
  • You can dig as a simple shovel, and a hand auger, which is much easier. The depth of the pit should be from 90 to 120 cm. When the pits are ready, they will be lowered into supports;
  • The supports can be wooden, metal, concrete, brick. It is more practical to use wood or metal, as their installation requires less effort, and the price varies significantly. The profile tube is perfect as metal supports;
  • If the choice fell on wooden columns, before lowering them into the pits, those parts of the columns that will be in the ground should be treated with a special tool capable of protecting the tree from moisture, for example, with bitumen;
  • When a column is in a hole, it can be left out, sprinkled with sand and poured on top of the water to achieve greater density;
  • If we are talking about metal pillars, after the column is put in its place, gravel should be added to the pit and concreted. To fix the supports in the desired position, you can use props;

Pouring the pit with concrete

  • Often rubble is used to fill holes;
  • Columns must be set strictly vertically, for this you can use the level;

Setting columns

Helpful advice! To achieve greater stability of the entire fence can be attached to the columns of the "soles" in the form of metal plates.

  • We stretch the rope between the outermost columns and determine the locations of the remaining supports of the fence. The length of the section of the fence can vary from 150 to 250 cm;
  • Digging holes for the remaining columns;
  • When the pits for all supports dug, you can install all the pillars. In order for them to “come out” of the earth to the same height, you should pull the rope or string between the outermost pillars and adjust the height along it.

Installation of "canvas" fence

Now that the supports are installed, you can proceed to the installation of the beams:

  • in the supporting pillars you can cut the grooves into which the beams will “enter”;
  • attach the guides with fasteners (a simpler option);
  • If the pillars are metal, they can be welded to the corners on which the beams will lie;
  • If you install a vertical chess, the guides should be set horizontally;
  • If a horizontal execution of a chess fence is planned, the support bars for the slats should be fixed on the pillars (if the columns are metal). Also, with the horizontal arrangement of the slats, it is better to install another vertical beam between the pillars;

Horizontal chess game

  • The diagonal arrangement of the slats (which is less common) requires attachment to both horizontal guides and poles (depending on the slant of the slats);
  • When the beams are fixed on the columns, you can proceed to the installation of plates. Here, no marking is necessary, since the unequal distance between the slats will spoil the appearance of the fence. Therefore, a clear markup should be made;
  • Boards are installed in staggered order on both sides (the photo shows the correct location of the planks). The boards can be nailed with ordinary nails, or you can attach them with self-tapping screws;

The location of the slats in a chess fence

Important information! All components of the fence before installing should be treated with waterproofing agents. So the fence will last much longer. Plates should be installed at a short distance from the ground so that they do not absorb moisture from it.

  • Finally, you can install the caps (caps). These are the levels covering the upper edges of plates of a fence. Tops protect them from moisture (rain, for example). Attach caps better at a slight angle so that they flowed water.

It should be noted that for this type of fence can be used and unedged board. It looks quite aesthetically pleasing (also learn how to make a fence from the netting of a chain-link on your own).

A wooden chess fence is a fairly budget and attractive variant of the fence. Its use is not limited to fencing facades. Chess fence can be installed independently, not having any skills. On the Internet you can find a lot of videos on the installation of wooden fences, which will form a clear picture of this process. Dare, improvise, and your fence will delight you with its elegance.
