Bilateral barriers
Fencing on the roads began to be used for a long time. Their designs changed over the years, but one thing did not change - this was the purpose of these products, which was to prevent cars from spontaneously leaving their lane and not colliding with each other and with other objects. Therefore, certain strict requirements have always been imposed on these road elements. And here it should be noted that the barrier fence - GOST R 52289 2004 - is by far the most reliable barrier construction on the roads.
Types of metal barrier fencing
Currently, manufacturers offer three main types of protective elements:
- The 11DO metal barrier fencing is one-sided elements that are installed along the edge of the highway. They are intended to ensure that the car does not move out of the road, plus the fact that it is a protective element of objects and objects that are located near the transport track. The longitudinal beams are mounted on one side of the support struts.
- Bilateral barriers 11ДД. They are usually installed between the oncoming traffic lanes. Therefore, their purpose is not only to separate the lanes, but also to keep cars from a head-on collision. The longitudinal beams are installed on both sides of the support columns.
- Bridge barriers can be both unilateral and bilateral. By name it is possible to determine that they are installed on bridges and overpasses, and their purpose is that of those described above.

Unilateral barrier
In each form there are subspecies, the differences of which are determined by purely technical indicators, where four main ones are distinguished:
- The holding capacity of the barrier enclosure, which is defined in joules;
- Step between support legs. The smaller it is, the stronger the design;
- Deflection of horizontal elements;
- Barrier width
For example, the trans-barrier 11DO-U1 (2) for all indicators:
- 130 kJ;
- 4 meters;
- 1.5 meters;
- 1.6 meters.
Now for comparison, the protective barrier of the brand 11DO-U2 (2), also in all indicators:
- 190 kJ;
- 2 meters;
- 1 meter;
- 1.2 meters.
As you can see, the differences are significant. But it should be noted that the higher the strength characteristics, the higher the price of the product.

Metal Barrier Structure
This type of transport walling is the most common. Their road workers use more often than others, because these products have excellent strength characteristics. Made of metal, they can withstand quite large shock loads, which is an important factor (See also the article Metal fences: a wide choice of really reliable structures).

What are metal barrier fences made of?
They consist of only three main elements:
- Support racks that are made of high strength steel. By the way, for each model a certain section of the used profiles is required.
- Beams.
- The console.
All the elements are attached to each other either by electric welding or by bolting. But so that this fence worked for a long time and did not create unnecessary problems, its surfaces are covered with protective compounds. These can be paints or alloys.
Attention! For coloring barriers use anti-corrosion and reflective paint. Very often, the elements of the fences are installed signs that help drivers in the process of driving on the highway.
As you can see, the device of the barrier is not so complicated, only three elements, well connected to each other. The main economic indicator that affects the cost of the product is the cost of raw materials.
That metal profiles have a high price, hence the price of the entire barrier. And the process of welding and cutting does not take much time and money.

How to install the barriers correctly
Installing a barrier fence in accordance with GOST is quite a serious matter and requires special equipment, because it takes a lot of time and labor to drill a large number of wells under the support columns. And with a special automotive drill, this process is simplified to a minimum.
Attention! The process of installing barriers on the roadway is made after the roadbed itself is completely ready, the slopes and embankment are reinforced, and the sections adjacent to the roadway are fully planned.
Stage # 1
The marking of installation sites of support pillars is made, that is, the design line is established. For this purpose, pegs are used, which are installed along the line every fifteen to twenty meters.
This is on straight sections. On the radius, the pegs are clogged depending on the size of the curvature radius.
In principle, the installation scheme of the barrier is not difficult, it is important to follow the prepared process. But it is precisely the marking that should be done very precisely.
Automobile tracks are long, and a slight deviation can lead to a curvature of the fence, which will affect the quality of the whole structure, especially its end sections.
Stage 2

Drilling and lifting machine
At this stage drilling of wells is carried out. How does this happen? The studs are driven into the installation site of the support pillars exactly in the center of the future well.
Be sure each stud should match the tensioned cord that defines the installation line of the racks.
The machine with the drill is placed across the road and fed to the drilling site in such a way that the center of the drill hits exactly on the pin. The rest is a matter of technology.
Stage 3№
This is the preparatory stage, where there is a need to prepare the foundation of the drilled holes. If the soil on which the barriers are being mounted is weak, then a cushion of rubble or gravel is necessarily poured onto the bottom of the pit. Therefore, there is a need to deepen the well on the thickness of the cushion, by the way, its thickness should vary within 10-15 centimeters.

Installation of pillars
Next, the depth of each well is monitored. If there is a discrepancy, then you will need to either report the pad mixture, or remove it.
After that, a small concrete base is cast, which is 10 centimeters. The concrete solution is fed into the pit with shovels and rammed with hand-held devices.
I would like to note how the concrete solution moves along the line of the pillars. It is brought to the object in a mixer, from which it is unloaded onto a special trolley on wheels.
It’s easy to move along the road by hand. Often, on the occasion of the absence of a trolley, concrete is poured out onto wooden boards made of scaffolding.
Stage 4
Installation of pillars is made after the concrete base dries well. This process involves installers, in whose hands there are special tongs. This tool covers the pillar and falls into the pit.
By the way, the standard size of the support pole is 1.8 meters, hence such a figure as the height of the barrier fence is observed.

Barriers on the new road
It is very important to follow some strict rules in this process.
- The pole is set in such a way that the mounting shelf with mounting holes will face the roadway.
- Be sure to set the vertical support column, which is used for plumb.
- The concrete solution is poured into 1/3 the depth of the well, where it is rammed.
There is an exact and standard installation of pillars. Note that the last column of the end section is set first.
Then the last pillar of the middle section. Twenty meters from the last is a lighthouse pillar.
And now the most important thing. Between them, a durable cord is tensioned, which will determine the level of the barrier itself.
Installed on the cord building level (photo below) should show that the cord is stretched exactly in the horizontal line. Very often, instead of a cord, a prefabricated template is installed from a metal profile (it will be more convenient to perform alignment).

If the horizontal is caught, then it is possible to install intermediate support struts. If the length of one section is equal to thirty meters, then all installed risers need to be aligned with the template, and if there is a need to adjust the location, while the concrete solution has not yet hardened.
Stage 5
Installation of the bars will have to be carried out using a crane. By the way, the installation scheme is as follows - the process is conducted from the end to the beginning of the section.
First of all, an energy absorbing insert is placed on the column mounting bar. Then, in a suspended state, a bar is brought in, which is pressed against the mounting plate and fastened to it with anchor bolts.

Since the parallel bars are attached to each other, they are not strong at the beginning, that is, until the end, they are not fastened. They are in a free state. While loosening each timber, it achieves their even horizontal position, which makes it possible to combine neighboring elements, fastened together by the same anchor bolts.
When the area of sixty meters will be installed, it is necessary to once again check the alignment of all its elements and parts. If everything is done correctly, then you can twist the anchor to the end. After that, the installation wells are completely filled with concrete.
Stage # 6
At this stage the fencing is rendered in final form. That is, they are cleaned with metal brushes from dust, dirt and rust.
Then paint in two layers. After drying, white and black lines are applied with an airbrush.

Bridge Fences
Barrier bridge fence is installed on a different technology. The thing is that it is impossible to drill the road surface in bridges.
Therefore, even at the stage of the construction of the bridge itself, metal embedded parts are placed, to which bridge barriers are subsequently attached. Fastening can be welding or bolted, it all depends on the requirements of the bridge structure.
