Window trimings yourself
Comfort in the house consists of small things. And the cozy house should be not only from the inside, but also from the street. How to achieve comfort in a country or private house or cottage? It is not enough just to decorate the foundation with a decorative tile and to complete the exterior. It is also worth thinking about the design of window openings. They should harmoniously fit into the interior of the facade of the building and create an atmosphere of comfort and convenience.
In Russia, it has long been customary to decorate windows with carved frames. Indeed, they will give any, even the most unassuming building, a unique flavor. Window trim, made by hand, popular now. However, the sale is difficult to find the most suitable option. The way out of the situation is independent manufacturing of the platbands.
What is the trim?
Before you begin to study the process of their manufacture, it is necessary to find out what are the trim plates and what they are for.
A bit of history
On the territory of modern Russia window window frames appeared from the beginning of the 15th century. They were used as a decorative frame for window and door openings. The material for their manufacture is wood. The uniqueness of the frames gives the fact that during the manufacture they were decorated with unusual carved drawings made in the form of an ornament and a pattern.
Woodcarving is one of the most popular Russian crafts. Russian craftsmen were famous around the world. It is not surprising that the carved window frames with a unique pattern became a kind of visiting card of Russian houses.
Purpose
In addition to the decorative purpose, the main purpose of using the platbands is to cover the gap between the wall of the building and the window or doorway.
Note! Platbands serve as a natural barrier to air flow, thereby preventing heat from leaving the house.
Also trim prevent the penetration of dust and dirt from the street inside the building.
Classification
There is a classification of platbands. Depending on their form, they can be:
- flat;
- figured form;
- rounded shape;
- bulging.
Of these, the simplest and most inexpensive option to manufacture is flat. Their installation is quite simple.
The platbands of convex shape have different surface heights. Therefore, for their manufacture using special equipment. This type of trim has a high cost.
The most technically difficult to manufacture - trimmed figure casing. Usually they are made by hand. Drawings are put on a flat frame, along the contour of which, using special tools, a pattern is manually executed.
Materials for production
For the manufacture of trim for door and window openings using the following types of materials:
- tree,
- composite materials (MDF, plywood),
- metal (made of steel or aluminum)
- plastic (PVC, polyurethane, polystyrene foam).
Wood
Earlier in Russia only wooden frames were made. They are considered the most environmentally friendly and safe for health.
- The tree is well breathable, which will contribute to natural ventilation.
- To get platbands with high strength, for their manufacture it is better to choose beech or oak. You can use pine or birch.
Among the shortcomings of wooden frames are the following:
- The wooden canvas absorbs water vapor from the air. Moisture accumulated inside the fabric freezes at low temperatures. This contributes to the destruction of the casing.
- The process of repairing wooden trim is quite time-consuming and complex, so the cost of repair work is high.
- The fragility of wooden linen. To increase its service life, it is necessary to coat the canvas with varnish or paint with water-repellent properties.
From composite materials
Made from veneered wood. For the manufacture of platbands used fiberboard (MDF) or plywood.
Note! This type of material is destroyed under the influence of the environment; therefore, trim plates made of composite materials should not be used for the facade, but for the inside of the building.
Features:
- easy installation
- low weight of products
- low cost.
In order to increase their service life, the frames of MDF or plywood can also be varnished or painted.
Metallic platbands
For their manufacture using aluminum or steel. Their main purpose is to protect the installation seam of door or window openings. Metal frames can be used both from the outside and from the inside of the house.
Typically, when installing the metal platbands are connected to the door or window box, thereby creating a whole.
From plastic
A fairly common type of platbands. Production materials: polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene foam and polyurethane.
- Among their main advantages is the ability to heat insulation. They retain heat well in the building.
- They also do not allow wet air vapor, which contributes to their durability.
- Do not collapse under the influence of the environment and are not subject to rotting.
- Do not transmit ultraviolet radiation.
- Can be installed on plastic windows.
Mounting method
It is not so difficult to make and install the frames yourself. Before proceeding with the installation, it is necessary to consider the basic installation options for the platbands:
- Telescopic. They have a ledge angled at 90 degrees, which is mounted in special grooves on the door or window box.
- Overhead. Mounted on a window or doorway. In this case, traces of fasteners will be visible, which reduces the aesthetics of the casing.
Instruments
For the manufacture of carpentry with their own hands will need the following tools:
- Chisels in the shape of semicircles (width from 0.5 to 2.5 cm; medium, round or sloping).
- Knife. The blade should be cut at a wedge-shaped angle of 30 degrees.
- Flat chisels (size 0.7 cm, 1.2 cm and 2 cm).
- Cutter knife
- Glacier chisels (curved and semicircular shape).
- Chisel-Caesar (semicircular shape with a bend in the lower part; blade width from 2 to 5 mm).
- Chisels-angles (the angle of the bend of the blade from 5 to 15 degrees).
- Chisels with a curved blade (bending angle of the blade from 50 to 70 degrees).
- Jigsaw files (narrow blade, large tooth spacing).
Making platbands on windows
The main stages of work:
- Selection and manufacture of the picture. It can be done independently, taking into account the scale or use modern computer programs.
- Transferring the finished picture to the canvas.
- Cutting out small shaped parts using a jigsaw.
- Cut out the outer contours of the ornament.
- Fixing the trim on the wall with nails, screws or building glue.
Hand-made window frames will create a unique building design and comfort in the house.
