The crack on the facade - what to do
Any material over time loses its original qualities. And if there is a crack in the wall of the house, then you should not panic, you need to understand the reasons and ask what to do. With a crack in the facade in most cases, you can cope on their own.
Concrete surface
In fact, concrete is considered to be a durable and stable material, its characteristics allow the erection of any structure. Then the question arises - why do cracks form in it?
Experts identify three factors that can lead to such a defect:
- If the production of concrete was not accurately observed technology.
- If the technology has not been followed directly during construction.
- The cause of cracks in concrete can be long-term exposure to overloads.
To seal a crack in a concrete facade, you need the following:
- cement,
- sand,
- water,
- construction foam,
- hammer and trowel.
If everything is ready, then you can get to work.
Two options for sealing cracks in concrete
Sand and cement:
- Having identified the problem area, you need to thoroughly clean it from small fragments and delaminations.
- If the crack is large, then there will be no problems with cleaning, and smaller defects need to be tapped with a hammer to reveal hidden cracks that may peel off after repair.
- Then the place of repair is plentifully moistened and sealed with a solution of cement and sand, in the ratio 1: 3.
Construction foam:
This option is suitable if the crack in the concrete facade is not too large.
- As in the first case, the problem area is cleared.
- Then on both sides of the crack you need to make two grooves. For this you can use a drill with a drill at 30.
- Foam is introduced into these holes until it is completely filled.
- After drying, the excess foam is cut off, and the surface is puttied.
Note! In both cases, after the material dries, the surface is leveled with cement mortar and, if necessary, the repair location is painted in the color of the wall.
Brick facade
The walls of brick or other similar material (aerated concrete, cinder block, kotellets, etc.), as a rule, plaster. The facing brick in itself has an attractive appearance, therefore walls from it cannot be finished.
Cracking a brick wall spoils the look of the building. To understand the cause of cracks will help the following list:
- Foundation drawdown. Technological disruptions may affect this.
- Non-compliance with the proportions of mixing sand with cement for masonry.
- Low quality bricks.
- Technological impacts (landslides, earthquakes).
- General emergency condition of the building.
- Redevelopment, demolition of partitions indoors.
- Primary shrinkage. This reason is peculiar to new buildings.
Some of the reasons listed are quite serious, and a simple seal of cracks will not help here. Consider the possible options if the crack appeared in the case of poor quality material.
To begin with, the repair site needs to be expanded and checked for hidden damage. To do this, you can use a hammer or an ax. Then you need to prime the crack and seal it with a solution of cement.
Note! If a hollow brick wall is being repaired, then, as a rule, large faults can hide behind small gaps. In this case, to lay a solution to the problem place will not work. First, it is filled with foam and only after that the solution is used.
Repair brickwork
In this case, the restoration work can be carried out only after the crack ceases to grow. As a rule, this occurs after 3 years, when the building “gives” natural shrinkage.
- Minor damage needs to be extended to simplify the work of embedding. Just do not bang with a hammer - you can split a brick.
- After processing the repair site, run it for better adhesion of the mixture.
To seal the cracks in the brickwork is better to use cement and sand, mixed in a ratio of 1: 3.
As a tool, a rubber spatula is suitable, which “works” well on irregularities.
Note! In order to “cement milk”, which is released from the solution, did not leave a hardly removable mark on the brick, after repairing the crack, it is necessary to wipe the brickwork dry.
After hardening, the repair mark can be painted in the color of the brickwork.
Wooden facade
The crack on the facade of the house of wood is a feature of old buildings. Over time, cracked logs form large cracks, which give the structure an unaesthetic appearance.
Repair of such cracks is simple, the main thing is to follow certain recommendations.
Note! Wood, unlike brick or concrete, is a living material. Therefore, large cracks can be used to give the facade an unusual appearance, without resorting to repair. To do this, you can paint the facade with dark stain or varnish, just do not use to paint the paint of light tones. Remember, this option is possible only if there are small cracks. Large cracks must be repaired.
Formerly, wooden liners were used for repairs, which were machined to the size of the crack, inserted into it and painted over with paint. It was not a very effective way, because the defect could not be completely hidden.
Today, for this purpose, various fillers are used, which penetrate into any gap, and because of their elasticity after repair, it is possible to carry out any surface treatment.
Technology works
- The cracks are widened with a chisel and, if necessary, treated from the inside with sandpaper.
- After that, it is necessary to remove with a solvent all remaining remnants of wood, old paint or varnish.
- Then putty is prepared in accordance with the instructions, it needs to fill the gap as tightly as possible.
- After that, the surface of the facade is treated with sandpaper, polished and dyed with varnish or paint in color.
It is necessary to begin repairing cracks on the facade when the total area of destruction is 30%. Getting started it is important to consider the compatibility of the old material with the new one. For example, a surface with lime plaster can be repaired only with a similar composition.
The main enemy of the facades of both plastered and brick - is moisture. Therefore, in order to protect the surface from cracking, first of all, it is necessary to properly organize the system for the discharge of moisture, and to clean the drain pipes and gutters in time.
