Facing the facade with natural stone itself
It's no secret that the facade of the building is the hallmark of the homeowner. Even the most expensive project of construction will look unpresentable, if you do not pay due attention to the facade. How to do the facade cladding natural stone with their own hands, we will look further in the article. It is important to remember that the lining should perform not only an aesthetic function. It is designed to provide thermal insulation, moisture resistance, durability and comfort.
It is the facade decoration of the house with natural stone that performs all of the above functions, which allows it to remain at the top levels of popularity in the construction market.
The advantages of facing
- The house with a facade of natural stone looks well maintained and soundly.
- The facade trimmed with natural stone is characterized by durability and long service life.
- Over time, under the influence of external factors, such as temperature drops and precipitation, natural stone does not lose its original color, does not crumble and does not deform.
- A wide choice of colors and textures allows you to optimally choose the option specifically for each building, which smoothly fits into the surrounding design.
Natural stones for the facade
The most popular types of natural stones for facades are: limestone, marble, granite, shell rock, sandstone and dolomite.
Limestone - is a soft sedimentary rock of organic origin. The main component of this rock is calcite, but it may contain impurities of phosphate, silicon, quartz. The color spectrum of limestone is varied: light gray, light beige, white and yellow, rarely pink limestone. The most qualitative limestone is white-pink and white-yellow.
This rock is formed in the shallow sea basins in the form of layers and is mined by the open method.
Note! Facing natural stone limestone is used not only to finish the facades, but also directly for the construction of the buildings themselves. Limestone tiles adorn the exterior and interior of buildings.
The advantage of this material is that it retains heat, passes air and water and is 100% protected from radiation.
At first glance, the most relevant would be to use white marble for cladding, but, unfortunately, it is the external weather that adversely affects it.
Granite It is the most popular rock for lining, as it has frost resistance, durability and perfectly withstands various mechanical stresses. Such characteristics allow the use of granite as a cladding material. Depending on the ratio of minerals (quartz, mica, feldspar) granite differs in color and strength.
Shellfish - natural stone of milky color. The name of the stone is explained by the base, which includes the shells and shells of marine life. The age of the material exceeds 550 million years. Its mining occurs in the quarries of the Crimea, Azerbaijan, and Kyrgyzstan.
By their nature, shell rock is considered an inert material. It is durable, not afraid of fire, has the property of noise insulation, thermal conductivity and boasts a long service life.
Dolomite - natural stone, one of the conditions of education, which is the presence of salt water. It has an intricate pattern, and its color range is a combination of yellow and white. Due to the ease of processing it can be given any shape. Facing the facade with a flat dolomite will give it a more official look.
Calculation of the amount of material
As a rule, for finishing the facade with natural stone, they use fragments of two types with their own hands:
- Flat parts - calculation is measured in square meters, namely: we count the entire area that is to be finished and divide it by the area of one facing material. If facing material of the correct form, without figured nuances, then its area is specified at production by the producer.
- Details for finishing corners - the number of these fragments depends on the metric area of various angles and joints. To calculate the required number of coal parts, you need to add the length of all the corners and divide by the length of one product.
Note! When purchasing finishing materials for the facade, it is recommended to purchase 10% more than the value that was calculated.
The technology of finishing the facade of the house
The decoration itself does not present any particular difficulties. The base under the lining of natural stone can serve as a concrete, brick, plastered or wooden surface. If the base is concrete or brick, then the time for shrinkage of this material is six months and only after this time can you start facing with stone.
Stone finishing:
- first you need to thoroughly clean and level the surface;
- then treat the surface of the wall with specially-designed plaster;
- then you can install the facing material using a special glue for the stone.
Finishing wooden buildings:
- A waterproofing layer is applied to the wooden base in order to subsequently avoid the penetration of moisture, which is capable of destroying both the walls themselves and their finishing;
- metal mesh is mounted, the cells of which must be at least 30 mm;
- surface plastered;
- if the building is erected from logs, pre-fasten the wooden guides, treated with antiseptic;
- fasten the finishing material with screws;
- the distance between the plates should be 1.5–2 cm. It is not forbidden to put a tile into the joint.
General Lining Guidelines
Preparing the facade for cladding:
- The facade of the building on which the lining is being carried out should not subsequently be subjected to deformation or shrinkage.
- A prerequisite for the decoration of the walls is their flat surface, there should not be any chips, hollows. You can allow small errors, the area of which should not exceed 2 mm per one square meter.
- Before you glue the stone on the wall itself, it is recommended that you first lay out the entire pattern on the ground.
Installation of natural stone на фасаде:
- If finishing work is performed in hot weather, it is recommended to pre-moisten the base with a paint brush.
- The adhesive composition is prepared depending on the material from which the building was built and the facing stone. You can buy a special glue in the store or knead the cement-based mortar yourself, observing the recommendations and proportions.
- The composition is applied to the seamy side of natural stone with a trowel so that the layer is evenly distributed over the entire surface of the material.
- The product is pressed against the wall as tightly as possible, under pressure. So there is excess cement composition, which are carefully removed.
- To separate the fragment in place of his beat a special wooden hammer.
We sew the seams:
- The seams are rubbed and sewn after laying the entire stone.
- For stitching need a special solution. It is placed in a bag, in which a small incision is made for a more accurate extrusion of the solution.
- After the solution is slightly grabbed, it is rubbed with a special plastic spatula.
In the process of installation it may be necessary to trim the facing stone, for this purpose use the grinder. The Bulgarian should be equipped with a stone cutting wheel or a diamond disk.
Note! The texture of the wall will be richer and brighter if you add a contrasting color to the solution. At the end of the work, the facing is washed and varnished. Choosing a varnish for coating, it is worthwhile to choose polyurethane or polymeric varnishes based on acrylic, since they have moisture-resistant properties.
The surface of the facade is recommended to periodically wash off dirt and dust. After washing it is necessary to refresh the lacquer layer. The cost of finishing the facade with natural stone varies depending on the type of stone. The most expensive material for decoration is granite and marble.
Note! Choosing granite, do not forget that this is a rather heavy finishing material, but the shell rock is lighter and its installation is simple.
You can choose a cheaper version of cladding and decorate the facade with siding or artificial panels, but it is worth considering that the service life will be much less, which means that after a few years you will have to wait for the same amount of work and new costs.
