Suspended doors: design features

Doors

Suspended sliding doors are used quite often, for example, where it is necessary to ensure unimpeded passage of people inside and outside the building, as well as with limited lateral space, which does not allow to install a sliding structure, the system for suspended doors is the only convenient solution. What is their dignity and fundamental difference, where are they used and how are they installed?

We will try to give you comprehensive answers to these questions, and the video in this article will be a visual aid for those who decided to put such a door on their own.

Swing doors: design features

By and large, suspended interior doors are similar in design to traditional doors with a vestibule. Their main difference lies in the option of fastening the valves to the surface of the frame.

Opening such a door provides a closer, mounted, as in the photo, in the floor under the door. This mechanism not only allows the doors to move along a radius, but is also able to lock them in a certain position (see. Door lock: why it is needed).

 So:

  • The top cover of the closer removable. Therefore, if repair is necessary, the pendulum doors are pushed open, screws are unscrewed, fixing the cover, and make adjustment, lubrication or other necessary actions. Instructions for the maintenance of the mechanism is usually attached to it, so during the operation of the door, the assistance of specialists is usually not required.
  • Since the closer is sunk into the floor structure by about 8 cm, it is necessary that the installation of the door structure should be done in parallel with the installation of the floor covering. This mechanism also serves as the lower hinge for the door leaf, ensuring its strict verticality.
Upper loop of the pendulum flap
  • As for the upper loop, it also consists of two elements. One of them is fixed on the inner surface of the frame, and the second, the return one, is fixed on the door leaf and it should ideally be combined with the static part. The upper loop is also a kind of mechanism. It helps to adjust the opening angle of the sash: the maximum is 180 degrees.

The price of swinging doors occupies a middle niche between swing and sliding options (see. Doing custom do-it-yourself interior doors: mounting technology). Naturally, it also depends on the size of the valves, their execution and decorative design.

Types of radial doors

The suspension system for sliding doors is quite different. In principle, doors with a suspended structure can be made of any material, including wood, although this is quite a rarity.

Most often they are glass either from aluminum or metal-plastic, but again, glazed. There are still metal doors with swaying doors, but this is not an option for civilian buildings, but for specialized institutions: hospitals, food processing enterprises, production workshops, and hanging cabinet doors are made, for example, if there is not enough space for a traditional opening.

Glass swing door in office lobby

 So:

  • The most popular doors made of glass, as it transmits light. If we consider that in the lobbies of buildings most often there are no windows, the installation of the glass entrance door contributes to the natural lighting of the room during the daytime. With a large cross at the entrance often put the profile doors with glazing. It is a prerogative for all kinds of administrative and public buildings, stations, sports facilities.
  • In more respectable institutions: restaurants, bars, lounges, shopping and entertainment centers, the doors are often all-glass. They look very elegant, even if the glass in them is set smooth and transparent. If the door leaf is decorated as in the example we have cited, then they also become an excellent element of interior design.

  • To achieve an aesthetic effect, manufacturers use all possible ways to process glass: cutting, airbrushing, photo printing, color overlay, sandblasting and matting. This approach to the design of door panels has contributed to the fact that glass doors of various designs can be increasingly seen in residential interiors.

Note! For reasons of fire safety, a door made of glass in general can be considered the best option: it does not burn, does not smoke, and, thanks to the pendulum mechanism, does not create a barrier to evacuate people.

Glass for them is used tempered, not less than 8 mm thick. It is impact resistant, and in order to break such a door, the applied force must be rather big.

But even if this happens, the glass will simply shatter into small, rounded pieces that can not hurt anyone. You can buy a hanging door in many versions and the choice is yours.
