Sliding interior doors - features and applications
The advantages of sliding doors attract the attention of more and more people. They are comfortable, beautiful, original. Learn more about when their installation will be more appropriate, and what they are, and you can read this article.
Types of sliding doors
Already from the name it is clear that the sliding doors do not rotate relative to the wall, but move in the same plane. This allows you to save space, create interesting design projects, give the interior a light and modern look.
Depending on the materials from which they are made, are divided into several types:
- Economy class - from solid pine or veneered MDF or chipboard.
- From the array of valuable wood - ash, oak, maple, beech, etc.
- Glass (cm. Glass двери – виды и возможности использования) - transparent, frosted, colored or stained glass is enclosed in an aluminum frame.
- Combined. The combination of materials can be very different: wooden solid and glass, veneered frames and glass.
- Plastic.
By the number of cloths, sliding doors can be single-ended and double-ended. And in the case of sliding partitions - multi-field. Finally, they may differ in some design features.
There are the following types:
- Penal
- Coupe
- Techno
- Partition
About how they differ from each other, as well as the feasibility of their use should be discussed in more detail.
Sliding door case
Penal или кассета – это маскирующийся под стену закрытый элемент конструкции, в который дверь прячется при перемещении в открытое положение.
To install a single-door door, the case is placed only on one side of the opening, but in most cases the wall from the opposite side also has to be thickened to solve technical issues of finishing. Therefore, with a sufficiently large width of the door opening, it is more rational to install two-part constructions.

The advantage is that they do not violate the integrity of the design and allow the maximum use of the adjacent space. Sliding designs are hidden in a niche and completely invisible. In this regard, they can be used both in very small rooms and in spacious ones - for the performance of parade functions.
Coupe door

The flaps move along the wall along a guide fixed above the opening. Such a sliding door differs from a case-door in that it does not allow furniture and interior objects to be placed close to the part of the wall along which the canvas moves.
To install the compartment door is not necessarily framing the opening box. If desired, you can put the box rack in places the most open position of the canvas. Such designs are often used to design dressing rooms.
Techno door

Executed in an ultramodern style, this door does not need a hidden fastening of sliding mechanisms. On the contrary, they become additional design elements of the interior, original decor.
Canvases themselves are often made of tempered glass, metal and other modern materials. Ideal for high-tech interiors (see Style of interior doors).
Door partition

The design feature of this type is the use of several wings, some of which can remain fixed. Also, the partition doors usually have a greater height and move along the rails attached to the ceiling.

Disadvantages of sliding doors
Despite all the advantages that the sliding door has, it also has some drawbacks, which sometimes become decisive when choosing a view.
So:
- It is able to provide high-quality sound insulation of the room in which it is installed. Unlike swing, it is not so tightly included in the porch of the box, and even a small gap leads to the penetration of sounds into the room.
- For the same reasons, this design does not have good thermal insulation properties.
- On the sliding is not always possible to install a reliable lock.
- Finally, it costs more than a swing of the same size and quality. And this concerns not only the cost of the construction itself (see Interior door construction), but also payment for its installation services.
The last item is often the main obstacle for those who are not ready to pay a lump sum behind the door, when there are big expenses for repairs and the purchase of a variety of finishing materials and furniture. However, for people who have some experience with a construction tool, it is quite capable of installing with their own hands.
How to install a sliding door yourself

Detailed instructions are always included with the sliding system and door leaf.
If you want to do and install it yourself, the sequence of your actions should be something like this:
- Measure the openingin order to determine the size of the canvas - it must cover the opening at the top and sides of a few centimeters
- Order the canvas of the desired size or make it yourself (see How to make sliding doors with your own hands). As an option - you can buy a sheet of chipboard or MDF in the film, cut and close the ends with plastic or aluminum frames.
- Buy a set of sliding mechanism, the length of the guide which should be equal to double the width of the door.
- Guide along which the rollers will move with the web fixed on them, is attached to a wooden beam of the same length, and the beam is mounted on the base wall above the opening with metal anchors.
Note! The guide is attached to the carrying beam at such a distance from the wall that the door moves freely along it. If the doors go into a niche, then the axis of the guide must be exactly in the center of the hidden niche.
- On the upper end of the canvas are attached bracketsthat connect with rollers. The rollers, in turn, are inserted into the guide, and its ends are closed with plugs.
- If you intend to install the lower guidethen it is fastened strictly under the top rail to a clean floor, and a groove for it is selected at the bottom of the web.
