Despite the fact that today there is a huge variety of metal doors of various designs on the market, there will always be people who want to make the door on their own.

Measurements

Before you make a metal door with your own hands, you need to make accurate measurements of the door opening. Standard sizes are 800-900 mm wide and 2000 mm high.

These sizes are combined with a standard door jamb. When the dimensions are different, it will be necessary to weld the complementary frame elements into places where the parameters did not match (for example, from the top or from the side).

So, before you start, take a hammer and a chisel and on the side of the landing, make a cutout of the vertical casing.

We need to make sure that we are dealing with a real wall - concrete, plaster or brick, but not just a layer of plaster five centimeters thick, or, as it happens - a fifty centimeter section of plywood wall. After verifying on one side, repeat the same sequence of actions on the other side of the opening.

Materials and tools

• metal corner for box and door;
• steel sheet (thickness from 1.5 mm);
• a set of hinges (the amount depends on their strength, weight and size of the door);
• various accessories (handle, lock, etc.);
• construction foam;
• drill;
• anchor bolts or another option fasteners;
• welding machine;
• Bulgarian with a disk cutting on metal;
• plywood, veneer or boards for door trim (depending on what you plan to sheathe).

For example, if an entrance door (see Metal entrance doors with your own hands - reality or utopia) or a tambour door is made, then you need to take a metal sheet thicker, or make a door of two sheets, and fill the space between them with foam or other insulation.

Frame

• We carry out measurements of the doorway, leaving two centimeters from the box to the wall on each side, in order to seal this space with foam. We also need the gaps to adjust the position of the door in case of a skewed opening.

• According to the obtained dimensions, we cut a metal corner (for example, 50x25 mm). The corner is laid on a large welding table. Measure the diagonal of the rectangle, checking the corners of the future box (we must have the same distance). When all the dimensions are correct and identical, we proceed to the welding work.
• Do-it-yourself door - a metal box is measured by internal dimensions, taking into account the gaps on each side along the perimeter (0.5-1 cm). Then cut the corners (40x25 cm) for the door leaf. In the profile on the side of the castle, the grinder immediately makes a slot at the level where we will put the lock (see How to embed the lock).
• In the metal profile we hammer in the appropriate size wooden slats, to facilitate further door trimming.
• To make it easier to carry out welding work, we weld a hinge profile to the hinges and box. It is very important to accurately measure the distance between the hinges on the door frame and the box so that there is exactly a match. If we make a mistake here, then there will be problems with hanging the door.
• Next, we check that the profile of the box and the door leaf is parallel. Then we put the remaining web profiles in the box and weld them.
• After that, weld metal sheet. At first, we measure the canvas so that the curtain of the door leaf accounted for an centimeter on each side and 1.5 centimeters on the locking side. Cut the sheet to the specified size and put on the construction of profiles.
• To make it convenient to work, we first weld the loopback side on the reverse side of the metal sheet in the internal cavity, and then carry out welding work around the perimeter of the web.
• Weld the feigned strip from the inside. If you wish, you can also strengthen the door structure, if you weld stiffeners.
• Next, we clean the welds and proceed to painting the product. This should be done with any further plans, even if further finishing is planned. Painting will prevent the appearance of rust (see Paint for doors: choose and do painting). Making metal doors do it yourself.

Hinges

Помимо собственно двери, дверь металлическая своими руками нуждается в петлях (см. Hinges для металлических дверей — нюансы выбора). Для изготовления петель используем пруток диаметром двадцать миллиметров.

Please note that in each hinge there should be a steel bearing ball, which, having reduced friction, will make the hinge work silent.

Before welding the hinges, insert the door into the jamb so that the outer part of the door (where the metal sheet is welded) lies on the bounding corners of the box. Make sure that between the door and the box is the same distance on each side. But if the gaps are large (7-8 mm), do not worry: they will close the door seals, see also.

In order not to be mistaken during the welding of the hinges, mark the bottom and top of the door and the jamb with chalk.

Put the hinges on the gap between the joint and the door from the side where the door will open, strengthen them in this way:

• One part of the loop with the pin to be welded to the jamb up pin.
• Weld the return loop to the door.
• It is very important to arrange the second loop as well as the first one.
• Otherwise, it will not leave to hang the door.
• Strip the product along the weld seams and paint it.

Installation of locks

Making metal doors with your own hands includes the installation of locks. Most often put two locks. Regardless of their number, the installation technology of locks is identical. No matter how many locks there are, of course, there should not be overhead locks on the door.

Lock protection

So, we drill or cut a hole in the corner of the door leaf. In dimensions, it should be such that the lock body without gaps enters the slot. We put the lock in place, mark up all the holes that are needed for its installation: turnkey, end fastening, mounting plates, screws and handles. After marking we drill holes.

Along the entire perimeter inside the door, we screw the boards with a cutout for the lock on one of the boards. The length of the board should correspond to the width and length of the door: the width is 100-150 millimeters, and the thickness is ten millimeters less than the size of the shelves at the corners.

Screw the boards to the metal with conventional screws with countersunk heads (sizes 4 × 35–40 mm). To this end, in the places where the boards are located, we drill through several holes and screw the screws into the boards through them. As a result, all boards will be securely pulled to the door.

Keep in mind that on the metal door with their own hands, the holes for the latch and the latches are made in the door jamb just after installing the door jamb and hanging the door!

Also at the stage of installation of the lock we make a hole for the peephole.

Exterior finish

How to make metal doors with our own hands, we figured out above. It is time to proceed to further action - finishing the door (see Finishing metal doors with laminate).

You can sheathe the doors with wood panels or slats, stick PVC film, which will imitate the structure of the wood or trim the doors with soft material. You can also simply paint the canvas, and to improve the appearance, weld some forged decorative elements to the door.
