No matter why you need to change the door. It is important that the installation of metal doors was made according to the rules. Here we will talk about these rules and methods of installation in more detail.

Choosing a door

To install a new entrance door, you must first buy or order it. And to do this, you need to decide how this door will open: right or left, towards the street or into an apartment.

To do this, you need to make sure that the chosen option will be convenient for you, but it will not prevent the neighbors from opening their own door, and will not hinder easy access along the common corridor.

The next stage is the choice of door material and design (see How to choose a metal door). We advise you not to consider too heavy constructions - their weight still does not guarantee reliability and quality, and a massive door can sink and twist on its own weight, leading to rapid wear of the hinges.

You should also examine the real size, depth and reliability of the doorway. It often happens that the installation of metal entrance doors is made in the opening, in which there was a wooden “Soviet” door.

And during its dismantling, it is revealed that the new door cannot be reliably fixed in shaky walls, or that the opening turned out to be much wider than the installation rules require. It has to be strengthened (see How the doorway is strengthened), bricked up or, conversely, expanded. Or buy another door.

Go to the process

So, the door is ordered, made, paid for and delivered to the place. What to do next? How to install metal entrance door? What tools are required for this?

Let's start with them, without the necessary tools for the work you should not even undertake.

• Welding machine have very desirable, but not necessary, if the fixing of the door frame will be anchor bolts. And if the hinges are already welded to the door.
• Bulgarian - may be required for dismantling the old metal door.
• Drill and screwdriver.
• Molotock, hook, lomik - also for dismantling, but a wooden door. If you have a clean new doorway, they will not be needed.
• Wedges - to fix the box in the opening.
• Polyurethane foam. For a standard size door, one can is enough.

Dismantling the old door

It is clear that if there is an old door in the doorway, it must be removed. To do this, first remove the door leaf, lifting it to the level when the upper loop jumps off the bottom.

If the hinges are one-piece, arm with a screwdriver and unscrew the screws from the hinges.

Then dismantle the box. With wooden, everything is simple: remove all fasteners from it and break it with a crowbar. Pre box can be cut.

The metal box installed in the opening with the help of pins welded to it is harder to pull out. We'll have to repel the plaster around the box and saw the pins grinder.

But that's not all. Installation of the entrance metal door is possible only after cleaning the opening from the pieces of brick and plaster sticking out of it, old thermal insulation and any loose elements. Perhaps the opening will have to be strengthened. But this has already been mentioned above.

Installation options

In order for the door to hold tight and not to be cracked, it is first necessary to firmly fix the box in the doorway.

This can be done in two ways:

• Through mounting plates
• Through the holes in the box itself

The first option is preferable. How to install metal entrance door in this way? To do this, you need to make sure in advance that steel plates with mounting holes are welded to the box on the side that will look into the apartment.

The door frame is installed in the opening so that its flange lay on the outer wall, and the mounting plate - on the wall of the opening. In the hole in it during the installation of the fasteners will be installed.

Leave 15–20 mm gaps between the box and the wall on both sides.

The variant with fastening the box through the holes made in it itself is possible only if the thickness of the opening is large enough - more than 160 mm. Otherwise, your door will be easy to knock or pry out of the wall.

Manufacturers of metal doors do not always provide mounting holes in the box. If they are not on your door, you will have to drill them yourself, armed with a drill.

Mounting clearance with this installation option can be done less than in the first case - from 5 to 15 mm. It is also possible to combine the two described options for mounting a metal door, if its design allows it.

Regardless of the chosen method of installation, fix the box to the wall with anchor bolts at least 120 mm long. Instead, they often use steel pins of the same or greater length.

Installation

How to install a metal entrance door is described in detail below:

1. Install the metal box in the opening, fixing it with wooden wedges in at least four places - at the top and bottom of both side racks.

   Attention! During the installation of the box do not mix the hinge and lock sides, otherwise the door will open in the wrong direction.

2. Align the box so that there are equal gaps on the sides of it, and then fix the hinge rack strictly in an upright position, using a level or plumb.
3. Drill holes in the wall through the mounting lugs in the box or steel plates and drive the prepared pins into them, or fasten the stand with anchors.
4. Once again, checking the vertical stand, weld the pins to the box or rivet them, trying not to damage the box itself.
5. Grease the hinges and hang the canvas.
6. Install locks on the door (see Installing locks in a metal door: easier than you thought) and handles.
7. Align the lock stand so that it stands upright, and a uniform gap of 2-3 mm between the edge of the sheet and the sheet remains.
8. Fix the lock stand in the wall and check how easily the door closes and opens and the lock works.
9. If everything is in order, remove the wedges and fill the installation gaps with building foam. In order not to stain the door, pre-paste the box with masking tape.
10. In a day, when the foam is completely dry, its surplus can be cut off, and the door can be decorated with platbands.
