How to upholster the front door with your own hands

For many of us it is very important what appearance the front door will have. Therefore, we strive to decorate them. But not only to give them a sophisticated look. Upholstery can be useful and enhance the insulating properties of the door.

Consider the question of how to upholster it? To do this you will need the following materials.

Vinyl artificial leather

If you are not aware of how to upholster the door, then you will need vinyl artificial leather (it can also be artificial leather, leatherette, genuine leather or PVC film). You can buy vinyl leather in a specialized store, it is sold on a cut. As a rule, the width of such material ranges from 100 centimeters to 150 centimeters.

In that case, if you have a door of standard dimensions installed, then in order to upholster it, you will need a vinyl-leather cut, the dimensions of which will be a little more than 10-15 centimeters from the door itself. In the event that you have a wooden door, then you need to take into account a few additional points.

You will also need to make additional rollers from vinyl imitation leather strips (strip width 10-15 cm). You will need three such strips, the height of which will be equal to the height of your door.

Purchase lining material. In the role of lining material, use foam rubber, the thickness of which can be 10-20 millimeters. If you want to increase the performance of heat and noise insulation (see. Noise isolation of the front door with your own hands: make your life comfortable), then izolon can be used as a lining material.

This is a very effective and practical material that is used in the automotive industry. Of course, isolon is more expensive than regular foam rubber, but its useful properties far exceed foam foam performance.

Tip! Foam rubber is very practical and affordable material. Moreover, if you are still in search of material for insulation, remember that foam rubber is sold in sheets of 1 meter by 2 meters. Which greatly simplifies its use!

You can not upholster the door without decorative upholstery nails. These are special nails that have a very wide cap. There is a rich color range of such decorative nails. They are imitated in gold, bronze, copper, silver and other materials.

In the hardware store or in the construction market you can find upholstery nails tied with leatherette or leather. It will not be difficult for you to choose decorative nails that will match its texture.

Tip! It is recommended to purchase decorative upholstery nails, which in color will match the color of your entrance door. This will give the effect of a harmonious combination and style.

If you decide to knock down a metal door that does not have special holes for nails, you will definitely need glue. An excellent choice of glue for our operation will be the usual Moment glue. For finishing one side, one tube of 100 milliliters will be sufficient.

Before going directly to the upholstery, you should have the following tools on hand:

conventional building stapler and a set of brackets 8-10 millimeters;
simple hammer;
strong scissors;
ordinary stationery knife with replaceable blades;
set of screwdrivers;
classic pliers;
for the door trim also need a brush.

Preparatory stage

Make sure that you have purchased all the necessary materials and you have the necessary tools. Now we need to prepare the door itself.

To do this, do the following:

remove all lock systems;
remove the peephole;
clean your door of the old plating.

So, we have everything ready and we can proceed to the door upholstery.

Metal door upholstery

We upholstered metal door:

Take a brush and a tube of glue. Carefully coat the entire perimeter of the door.
After that, you must attach a sheet of foam rubber and glue it.
Cut off excess foam with a knife. Now apply a layer of glue on the upper end of the entrance door.
After that, as well as foam rubber, we apply and glue our upholstery.
After this, we glue our leatherette from the hinge side., from the side of the lock (if you fail to glue the material to the bottom edge, then you will have to remove it from the hinges).

Wooden door upholstery

This process is somewhat more complicated and is divided into two stages.

First you need to make a special roller that will visually hide the gap between the box and the door.
Take one strip of vinyl leather and using a stapler, nail this strip to it in such a way that the strip goes to 3-4 centimeters on it.
After you have nailed all the strips, you can proceed to the upholstery of the entire side of the canvas.
To do this, you need to start nailing the material, starting from the top of the canvas and keep it in a constant little stretch.
When you reach the bottom of the entrance door, you can install the door hardware and proceed to the upholstery of the outer side of the entrance door.

The outer side of the door is required to upholster in a slightly different way:

The first thing to do is to close the door and mark the projection of the box on the canvas with a pencil. So we get the outline of the skin and the indent for the quarter.
After that, we need to retreat 1 centimeter from the line and fix the foam rubber, as we did in the first case, leaving the lower edge free.
Now we need to make insulating strips. This operation can be performed similarly with the upholstery of the inside of the entrance door.
The lower part of the roller should be attached so that when the door is closed, it is as tight as possible to the threshold (see How to make the threshold of the entrance door and why it is needed).
After these operations, we beat the remaining part of the skin and mount the necessary accessories back.
