Wooden doors: pros and cons
Virtues
The main and main advantage that has, is the ecological purity of the feedstock. Aesthetic appeal, durability, excellent heat and sound insulation properties are also important, but they may also have designs made from modern composite materials used in manufacturing (see Interior door design).
In appearance, modern veneered or laminated doors are almost indistinguishable from wooden ones, but by touch you will always understand the difference between them. From the doors of solid wood noticeably breathes coziness, comfort, good quality.
disadvantages
Unfortunately, they also have some drawbacks, which, however, are minimized with respect to the production technology and the application of some wood processing techniques.
Like almost any natural material, wood has absorbent properties, that is, it absorbs moisture from the air. When fluctuations in humidity can be deformed, and if they were made of undisturbed wood - then decrease in size.
Therefore, in the manufacture of high-quality products, wood is pre-dried, then impregnated with oil solutions and, finally, treated with hot steam under pressure. As a result, they become less susceptible to moisture. Especially if in finished form they are covered with waterproofing varnish.
Attention. Serious manufacturers, who value their reputation, supply their products with all the necessary certificates confirming compliance with the production technology. Therefore, if you need a high-quality wooden interior door, ask the seller for certificates and be sure to be interested in the warranty period of operation.
Low cost wooden doors
The highest quality and expensive doors are made of valuable species of deciduous trees. This wood has a high density, beautiful color and texture.
As raw materials are used:
- Oak
- Nut
- Ash
- Cherry
- Beck
- Mahogany of different breeds, etc.

If financial opportunities allow, it should be just that. But a limited budget does not always have to limit your desires. You can well afford doors made of pine or glued solid wood.
Doors made of pine, at their low cost, have excellent technical characteristics and can serve for several decades. Of course, with the same condition - proper observance of the technological process of wood preparation. If they are covered with veneer of valuable sorts of wood, the cost will increase only slightly, and in appearance this door will be indistinguishable from the most expensive one.
Glued massif is made from inexpensive dried wood sawn on the lamella. Lamellae are glued together in such a way that the direction of the wood fibers in each subsequent layer is perpendicular to the previous one.
Thanks to this technology, doors from glued solid wood are not deformed, do not crack and perfectly perform all the functions inherent in doors from natural solid wood.

How to make a wooden door
You can make a wooden door yourself. With a great desire and insufficient budget - why not? We describe the simplest and most affordable way, which assumes that the old door frame is in good condition and not dismantled from the opening.
So:
- Measure the length and width of the box to determine the dimensions of the future door (see. Parameters of interior doors).
Attention! Note that there should be gaps of 2-3 mm above and on the sides between the leaf and the box, and 10-15 mm between the door and the clean floor from the bottom.
- In order to make the door of wood, you need a few well-dried cut boards with a width of 150 and a thickness of 30 mm. Of these, you need to make a frame, cutting off two racks on the height of the door and three or four crossbars along its width.
- Grind blanks from all sides until smooth and lay on a flat horizontal surface: first stand, and on them the upper and lower transverse segments.
- Align all the corners, measure the diagonals and lay the middle cross-section of the board on the stands at the place where there will be a handle or door lock.
- Mark the points of intersection of the longitudinal and transverse parts with a pencil and make at each half the thickness of the board. Use a hammer and chisel to remove excess wood. You should have some simple spikes:
- The process of continuing the fastening of parts together, having missed all the internal surfaces of the spikes with joiner's glue, fastening the corners with self-tapping screws. After that, you can stick sheets of fiberboard, chipboard cut to size onto the frame or revet it with wooden slats.
- You can do it differently: select a quarter along the inner perimeters of the frame, insert glass, stained glass, hardboard or any other sheet material and fasten it with beads.
After decorating your doors may look something like this:
