How to adjust the front door: care properly
The dwelling of every modern man needs reliable protection. The main bastion of protection of our homes are the entrance doors. Choosing doors, it is their ability to stop intruders, is the main criterion when choosing.
They must cope with a serious task - they are obliged to provide reliable protection of the dwelling, office, cafe and so on.
They must protect not only from robbers, but also from aggressive environmental influences. They should not miss wind, cold, rain and street noise. To do this, it must not only be of high quality, but must also be properly installed, and the adjustment of the doors must be carried out correctly.
At present, there are enough offers on the domestic market. Their diversity is such that each owner will be able to choose for himself not only according to financial possibilities, but also relying on the degree of its safety and appearance. Since the competitive struggle in the market is still quite high, manufacturers are trying to make their products with the highest quality possible.
Tip! Beware of fakes and low-quality doors! You should be alerted by too cheap entrance doors. At first glance, they are no different from ordinary doors of reliable manufacturers. But they are made of thin metal, which is very easily opened.
Feel free to ask the seller about the origin and quality of the door. Require a certificate. If the seller refuses to assist, feel free to pass by. Even if this is a very good offer, it does not suit you!
What to do after buying the door?
So, you have purchased a door for your home or apartment (see How to choose the front door to an apartment: matching price and quality). You are satisfied with the purchase. It meets your aesthetic taste, it is massive and able to protect you and your property from intruders. But, you do not know that systematic care is needed behind your door.
Incorrect operation or normal operation can damage the operation of the door, or cause it to break. Let's try to solve this problem. In order to extend the life of your door, you need to make periodic preventive actions.
In short, in order to keep it in working condition, you must perform the following steps:
- it needs to be lubricated regularly;
- it is necessary to pay attention to its appearance;
- you must periodically tighten the work items, as they have time to quickly loosen (the work items include fittings and hinges);
- at certain intervals it is necessary to clean the bolts from dust;
- as necessary, it is necessary to change the insulation (see Insulation for doors: types and parameters) and seals.

By following these simple and uncomplicated operations, you can significantly extend the life of your door and avoid the financial cost of troubleshooting. The main cause of failure is improper adjustment.
If it is illiterately regulated, then this can lead to the following consequences:
- if it is adjusted incorrectly, the mechanical parts of the loops wear faster;
- improper adjustment may lead to sagging;
- also, various types of breakdowns are possiblelike a lock jamming (see How to open the front door without a key), etc.
Adjustment steps
If, over time, you find that your door has begun to creak or there is difficulty in closing-opening, do not panic and grab the phone in search of the master. By following our advice, you can handle it yourself and understand how to adjust the doors.
Preparation for adjustment
In order to proceed with the adjustment, you will need the following materials and tools:
- socket wrench for 17 millimeters;
- car key candle;
- ordinary grease;
Before you begin, inspect carefully the structure of your door. You need to find out clearly what is the source of the squeak. This is usually either hidden hinges (see Door hinges that are hidden: how to select and install correctly) that need adjustment, or is the friction of the web on the opening.
Adjustment
We can divide this stage into two conditional processes:
- Firstly, everything can be very simple and prosaic. Dust may have entered the creaking hinges. And you need adjustment loops. To eliminate this trouble you need to purge the loop and lubricate them with lubricant.
- If you have a loop with an opening angle of 180 degrees, then you should perform this operation with the inner loops.
Sometimes, it turns out to get rid of the problem with a rubber seal. If at your door there are extraneous noises, or you feel that it shows through, use rubber seals.

Tip! To adjust the door buy a thin seal. In this case, it will not interfere with the free opening / closing of the door.
Seal must stick on the door from the inside, on the contours. Do not stick the seal along the entire length. It is advisable to do this only in the places of contact of the door.
- The second case is more labor-intensive. Check for visible scuffs on the door. After that, listen to different places of the door leaf for the presence of a squeak. After finding the location of the squeak, proceed to the adjustment.
First, loosen the front hinges. Next, based on the location of the squeak, loosen the hinges and move the canvas relative to the box.
After completing all the above operations, you can tighten the nut one by one, simultaneously swaying them in order to set the hinges into place. Then check if the creaking remains.
This is done by opening and closing. If the creak is still present, repeat the operations described above. If there is no squeaking and wrong work, congratulations - you learned how to adjust the door and learned how to do it yourself!
The main thing you should remember now is that every door requires careful preventive maintenance. Do not be lazy to lubricate the loop and blow dust, at least once every six months.
