Door transom - practicality and beauty

Doors

All entrance and interior doors have standard, universal sizes. But sometimes in some apartments (for example, the so-called "Stalin") or private houses there are non-standard doorways, both in height and width.

At installation of standard doors there is a free space which needs to be closed. A great solution to this problem is the use of transom.

The transom is a structural part of the door, which is located above them or on the side. Its main purpose is to fill in the free space when a standard door is installed and it is securely fixed to the whole structure in the doorway.

transom setting

The use of the sash is due to the fact that all manufacturers limit the maximum size of doors.

They are mainly produced in such sizes:

  • height up to 2200 mm;
  • width up to 1050 mm;

It is possible to make more doors, but in this case the weight of the door increases and, accordingly, the load on the door hinges increases. What to do if the doorway of the entrance door have a size of 3000? 1300 mm?

In this case, the installation of a standard door of 2000? 900 mm is perfect, and the rest of the space - at the top and on the side will be taken by the decorative part of the door - the transom.

Types of transoms

One of the features of the sash is the possibility of their use in decorating the room. Beautifully made and matched in color and texture to the doors, decorated with carving, figured cash counters, it will be a wonderful decoration of any interior (see Interior doors in the interior).

Framugi happen two types:

  • arched (see Arch doors with their hands: how to install);
  • straight;

Mainly in the rooms I use arched doors. This form allows you to make the interior more original and attractive.

Types of location of transoms

Possible designs of transoms

There are many types of sash arrangements:

  • on top of the door;
  • one side;
  • from two sides;
  • combined - from above and from the sides at the same time;

If both the upper and side transom are used, then such a system is called complex. Depending on the width and height of the door opening, the most optimal variant is selected.

Tip: when choosing the type of placement of the valves you need to estimate everything very well. So, for example, if the doorway is 1800 mm wide, it is better to install doors with a width of 800 mm and two side transoms of 500 mm each.

Materials for the manufacture of transom

Basically the transom is made of the same materials as the door itself and its box. They may be deaf and glazed. One of the interesting design solutions can be a combination of a deaf door (see. Interior doors deaf) and a transparent transom placed above the door. It is both beautiful and practical.

When using glass, there is an additional opportunity to illuminate the room. For example, in a dark corridor it will be much lighter in the daytime, due to the ingress of sunlight from the windows of rooms through the transom.

Tip: the use of an arched glass transom makes it possible to visually enlarge the doors

Entrance doors

The entrance doors, besides the fact that they serve as protection from uninvited guests, they should also not let through the cold inside the room and at the same time look beautiful. Similar requirements are imposed on the doors of the entrance doors.

Entrance doors with transoms

In the manufacture of entrance doors, their leaves are made in the same way: heat and sound-proofing material is inserted from metal or fiberboard sheets inside the body (see Insulation for entrance doors).

Framugi entry doors in the cut

Framugi entrance doors, which are made in this way, can easily protect the house from the cold and from unauthorized entry. They will also make the entrance doors more solid and beautiful.

Interior Door Framugi

When installing the doors indoors, sash is also often used. So, the interroom shutter will bring a certain highlight to the interior of the house, the deaf will emphasize the interior, the transparent will add light.

Tip: in many apartments mezzanines are installed above the interior doors. In this case, the transom can be used as a door to the mezzanine

The construction of the transom

By their design, transom are of two types:

  • Integral. In the case when the height of a standard door is more than 120 mm, then such a door frame has an additional top crossbar.
  • Separate. If from the upper edge of the door to the door lintel more than 120 mm, then a separate leaf is used. This is due to the fact that doors or objects with a length of more than 2300 cm are very problematic, and in some houses it is even impossible to bring them up the staircase.

Also, the doors are divided into deaf and with the possibility of opening. The deaf are a static construction, which are stuck to the door frame.

Opening transoms are mini-doors that are a smaller copy of the main doors. Opening the sash is very important when you need to bring any dimensional things.

Framing installation

Installation of transoms is as follows:

  1. A door box is attached to the door lock;
  2. The finished construction is attached to the walls of the doorway;
  3. Separately going deaf or glazed sash;
  4. After the doors are hung, the sash is installed and its fasteners are in the box;
  5. The final stage - the installation of cash cops and other decorative items.

A simple design of the valves, with its further installation, can be done independently. But if there are no necessary skills and experience, then it is better to entrust this work to professional builders who will do it correctly, reliably and quickly.

The use of sashes allows you to solve many problems with non-standard openings. They not only perfectly close the extra space, but also give the doors a beautiful and aesthetic look.
