When there is no possibility or desire to change the front door that requires correction, it is necessary to determine how serious the damage and malfunctions are and eliminate them.

Much can be done independently, but if an overhaul of the entrance doorway is required, you will have to invite the wizard. But here we will describe those door "diseases" that you can cure yourself.

How to repair the door

Consider in detail the correction of metal, wooden and plastic doorways.

Metal door repair

There are several reasons why you may need to repair metal doors. If the door leaf itself has been deformed, for example, as a result of a strong blow, there is no other way out except to remove the door from the hinges and take it to the workshop. But there are situations that are fully able to cope on their own.

It:

• Break the door handle or lock
• Sagging doorway
• Upholstery or facing defects

Repair of the front door lock may be required if the valve is broken, the handle has fallen off, cylinders have jumped out or bolts have moved. Sometimes the key is stuck in the keyhole and does not want to turn or take out the lock.

In this case, it is necessary to replace defective parts or the entire lock. To do this, completely unscrew the old system to remove it from the door and conduct an audit. If the lock is not to be corrected, a new one of the same size and design is inserted in its place.

But do not rush to change the locks until you are sure that the reason lies in them. If they work normally when the door is open, and start to act up only when trying to close it, then the reason for the box is skewed or the door leaf is sagging.

Try adjusting the hinges, pulling them up or putting metal washers on the hinge pins, and if that does not work, you will have to replace the box.

Sometimes the lock opens tightly because the receiving plates were installed incorrectly. To check this, coat the lock bolts with chalk or marker, close the door and try to turn the key. If the tags do not exactly match the lining, then in this case, repair of the front door locks is not needed. You just need to rearrange the cover.

If the door creaks or enters the box poorly, the reason is most likely in worn hinges (see. Hinges for metal doors). In the case when their lubrication or adjustment does not help, the hinges need to be replaced with new ones, not waiting until the door is completely stuck.

Attention! Unfortunately, more complex damage to metal doors require the intervention of specialists. Therefore, at the slightest suspicion of a problem, try to eliminate them without delay.

Repair of a wooden door

Wooden entrance doors are rarely found today, but if you do not want to change them to metal ones, be sure to cover them from the outside with a water-repellent agent - varnish or paint. This will protect them from rotting and help delay the repair of the entrance door.

As well as metal, wooden entrance doors with time can drain out due to wear of the hinges.

There are two ways to eliminate this problem:

1. Restore the previous level of the loops, putting the washers on their axles. Lubricate them with engine oil.
2. Replace the hinges with new ones.. To do this, you can use the old holes for screws, but the screws themselves need to be coated with epoxy glue before screwing.

If the nests of the self-tapping screws just loosened up and the hinges are in good condition, twist them to a new place. Improvement of entrance wooden doors can be required and in the event that they have swollen from the increased humidity and do not close. In this case, the doorway will have to be removed from the hinges and trimmed with the ends.

Cracked wooden doors can also be repaired by yourself. The door leaf needs to be cleaned of the old coating, removing it with a special solvent, removing with emery paper or heating with a building hairdryer and removing the paint with a spatula.

Then the canvas is plastered and re-painted. If necessary, the same actions are performed with the platbands (see How to install the platbands on the door) or box.

Sometimes there is a curvature of the door frame, which is also quite possible to fix.

In this case, the repair of wooden entrance doors will be as follows:

1. Remove the door leaf from the hinges.
2. Align the box with a building level and secure in the desired position using struts.
3. On the right and left racks of the box at the top and bottom, make holes with a perforator, drill them through and plunge 5-6 cm into the wall.
4. Hammer in the holes with wooden pins or metal rods of the desired length, smeared with glue. If you are not too lazy to pull the box out of the opening, you can fix it with anchor dowels.

Fixing a wooden doorway, you should not even begin if they began to rot. You will not stop this process, it is better to immediately change the door to a new one.

Plastic door repair

A typical failure of a plastic entrance door is a malfunction of the handle. To replace it, you need to turn the decorative plate at the base of the handle, remove it and unscrew the screws. After removing the broken handle, install the new one in the reverse order.

If the handle on the open doorway does not rotate, the repair of the plastic entrance doors will consist in adjusting the interlock holding the handle in the wrong position. To do this, at the end of the door below the handle, find the small metal tongue and press it while simultaneously turning the handle to the normal position.

If the door does not close to the latch, this may be due to thermal deformation of the door, as a result of which the latch tongue does not reach the counterpart. In this case, you need to unscrew the response plate and put a gasket under it.

Poor handle operation may be due to drying out of the grease. Improvement of entrance plastic doors in this case is not required, you just need to lubricate all the moving parts of the door mechanism. As a lubricant, you can use a vehicle tool WD-40. To eliminate the slack of the plastic door, it is sufficient to adjust the hinges (see How to lubricate the hinges of the plastic door and adjust) by removing the decorative covers from them.
