Do-it-yourself door decoration: a choice of options
Decorative door trim is one of the options for updating them. And not expensive. The price here will be chosen only by you and will not be significant. Materials for decorative door trim are on sale in a large assortment.
Today we will tell you how the decorative door trim is done. There are many options, and in the video in this article you are the ones to choose the best option.
Door trim
First, it is necessary to determine the material of the work, it may be facing the door with a decorative stone or any other material. But nowadays, many people use decorative covers to finish the doors.
It can be made of plastic or other material. Here, the plane will be ready and you can do the work yourself.
Is it worth doing
Decorative door trim, as well as other interior items of the apartment, is relevant in the following cases:
- Cannot achieve the desired result with fresh staining.
- New coloring means a lot of work.for which a preliminary surface preparation is needed, which will lead to a decrease in the strength of an existing layer.
- There was an idea to create an original design (see. We determine the design of doors in the apartment according to all the rules), in a short period of time and with small financial investments.
We select the material
Under the decorative trim doors understand the use of a variety of materials, including paintwork, which will help give the canvas the kind that would like to see. If we are talking about industrial production, then there such a type of design has become widespread.
In this case, this applies not only to the finishing of door panels, but also the manufacture of external facades of houses, furniture, as well as flooring.
The main requirements for surface finishing include the following points:
- Chemical resistance
- Strength.
- Светостойкость.
Currently, a similar material is plastic.
Note: In fact, this material is plain paper, which is impregnated with a special phenol-formaldehyde resin, and over time, it has been given increased strength.
As soon as production technologies began to develop, plastic began to be used in various fields and acquired a large number of forms. People quite often meet him in living conditions, things made of plastic, we come across almost everywhere.
But this material has its drawbacks:
- The basis on which the plastic is gluedtoo susceptible to moisture. As a result, its deformation may be observed.
- The choice of textures and colors is quite limited.
Examples include materials such as laminated chipboard, which is used in the manufacture of furniture, and laminated fiberboard. It is usually used as a floor covering. These materials are also susceptible to moisture, and even a slight wetting can have a negative effect on their properties.
Caution: For these reasons, the floors made of laminate, I advise you not to wet, and wipe with a damp cloth. Furniture that is made of chipboard, in no case can not be stored in a damp room, as under the action of moisture, it can simply fall apart.
In the event that such a nuisance has occurred, the parts made of laminate are no longer repairable:
- If you came across ads with information about furniture with a variety of textures and colors, then remember that this is a kind of advertising trick, a trick, in order to attract the attention of buyers. Such diversity requires large production capacities. Manufacturers are easier to produce products from the conveyor, offering products such as exclusive options.
- But do not forget that this original furniture is made only on its own, that is, manually. To do this, it is necessary to finish the cabinet doors, after which the headset will simply become unrecognizable. But let us return again to the plastic, which has become quite common and long ago used by all modern people.
- If you understand more carefully, it is not plastic, but the most different plastic, which is betrayed by a certain resistance to various kinds of effects, color, and also shape. An example would be boards for window sills, table tops, which are made with imitation of natural materials.
- Now, when it is possible to compare materials such as laminate and plastic, a person might get the quite expected question: "How to make an inexpensive and simple repair." There is a fairly simple answer to this question. For example, at home, a person can easily make a door, by renovating an old canvas, or repair the entire surface, while spending a minimal amount of money and a little time. You do not need to re-read a large amount of literature, study reference books, study painting and joinery.
Completing of the work
Decorative door trim with their hands is done in a certain sequence and with the observance of technology.
To do this on your own, you need the following:
- It is imperative to exclude from your vocabulary a phrase such as "it will come down like this."
- Do not stick any materials to the ends of the door leaf.
- When decorating doors, you must clearly adhere to the existing design.
- It is necessary to take seriously such a moment as the protection of the door leaf from the influence of an external factor.
Now you can see the main types of decorative finishes.
The first method of decorative door trim
This type of design can be used for the restoration of the old door, as well as for a new door that has not yet been varnished or painted (see Doors for painting: we prepare and paint).
When it comes to the restoration, that is, the renewal of old doors, their surface must be prepared:
- To begin with, it is worth repairing all the existing cracks and chips, grinding and leveling, removing old paint layers, if any.
Attention: You should not remove all the paint completely, because this process will take too much time, and from a rational point of view it simply does not justify itself. It will be enough to remove the paint in those places where its adhesion to the surface has become too unreliable.

- After the surface is fully prepared, you can begin to engage in door trim. It can be decorated with paper wallpaper with any pattern that you like or texture paper.
- This picture must be selected in accordance with the design of the room, so that there is complete harmony with the overall design pattern.
- If the door leaf, or rather the surface, has defects that are difficult enough to repair, then they can be hidden with the help of embossed wallpapers that have certain textured patterns that are well suited for these purposes.
After the surface finish is finished, it is given a shade by applying a varnish of a certain color. You can also make a similar lacquer yourself by adding a dye of the desired color to it. Colored lacquer gives the details of the doors different shades, while emphasizing the existing texture pattern.
Consider the order of decorative finishes:
- Texture paper or paper wallpaper is covered with a layer of varnish, and after complete drying, cut to the size of their gluing places.
- Glue the PVA slightly diluted with water and glue the workpiece on the door leaf, but do not forget that the ends of the frame can not be finished.
- Clay dries completely in twelve hours. After that, you can start the side edges of the door can be sanded with emery paper so that there is no textured paper on them.
- Furniture finish covers the entire door trim.
- After complete drying of the lacquer coating, the treated surface is ground with sandpaper again, without strong pressure. This is necessary in order to remove the remaining pile and dust particles.
- To complete the work with gouache and foam sponge, we make a texture, or the ends of the doorway are painted in the desired color.
- The final touch is varnish. This is done in order to protect it from the effects of external factors that can harm.
It should be noted that such technologies are adhered to by many companies that manufacture doors. The only difference is that the door leaf, made in the factory, is covered with sheet MDF, which is sealed with a thin veneer, imitating the surface of any particular type of wood.
They also stick a strip of laminated paper or veneer on the ends (see. Which is better - laminated or veneered doors: doing an analysis). The lower and upper end are not touched so that if the height of the box does not match the canvas, it can be adjusted. This is much easier to do than to completely resize a door frame that is already installed.
Second way
This method can be used to finish the new door, as well as to put in order the old one. It is suitable for any type of door, regardless of the terrain and other factors.
Despite the fact that this option is costly finishes, it is quite simple and for it is not necessary any preparatory work.

So:
- The essence of this variant of finishing is that the entire surface is covered with a hand-drawn special texture, which is applied with a spatula. A similar texture is made from colored nitro-enamel, which is sold in all hardware stores.
- Before you apply such a coating, the surface is necessarily subjected to pre-treatment, which consists in grinding. A small amount of chalk is then added to the nitro enamel. As a result of this, a colored putty should come out, with which all problem areas present in the door leaf will be aligned.
- In several jars it is necessary to dilute the paint of the color with which a certain pattern will be created. We add a small amount of furniture nitrolac, after which we start painting with a simple brush. In that case, if there is a need to work with paneled door, then here you need to use spatulas of various sizes.
- The painting process should be carried out in several stages, which means that there is a need to make several layers. After complete drying of the painted surface, it must be carefully polished until the glare disappears. This condition is suitable for those who want to end up with a door with a high quality finish.
Attention: In the event that there is no need for finishing of very high quality, then it is possible to stop only on grinding of medium moderation, which allows to achieve a fairly flat surface on which no visible defects will remain.
- Edging can be done immediately with a common surface, or done exactly the same as in the first stage, that is, to stop only on light painting the entire surface of the canvas.
- At the very end, it is necessary to make a small stroke - we cover the trimmed surface with matt varnishes. One layer allows you to hide the existing small irregularities, and finish to obtain additional qualities of light fastness and strength.
After all the works are completed, then you will get beautiful doors that have received a new life.
The third way to decorate

Painting and patinating is the most common way of decorating doors, which is currently used. This type of finish will make the design truly exclusive.
If you follow the tips described above, your door will heal a new life and look better than ever. Regardless of whether you will apply decorative linings to trim the doors, or any other option to perform the work, the instructions for chemical compositions should be studied for the beginning. After all, they can be harmful.
It is also worth thinking about the environment in which the door is located, if it is wet, then waterproof materials should be used. After that, select the desired design from the photo and you can start working.
