Warming of the ceiling with sawdust in a private house
Low-rise building consists of several structural elements - the foundation, floors and an attic room with a roof. Residential zone and ancillary facilities (kitchen, bathroom, pantry) from the under-roof space separates the ceiling. The latter performs several functions:
- separates the upper and lower floors, creating isolated rooms;
- for the lower room - this is the ceiling;
- upper room - floor.
In addition to the strength functions, the overlap should exhibit heat insulating properties. And sometimes, in order to preserve heat, they make insulation of the ceiling with sawdust in a private house.
The need for thermal insulation

The air, heated, rises. There, under the ceiling, he gives part of his thermal energy to the ceiling and goes down after the next portion of heat. If the upper building structure has a significant heat transfer coefficient, then the heat loss will be significant. It follows from this fact that not only the foundation, walls and roof should be insulated, but also the floor between floors. Such an operation must also be carried out when refitting the attic room into the attic - it is not always used.
Kinds утепления

Thermal insulation of the upper floor can be carried out in several ways:
- creating a cushion of lightweight concrete, which includes a heat insulator, for example, expanded clay, vermiculite;
- use of mineral wool slabs, such as fiberglass;
- the use of technological foam.
All these and other methods have the right to exist, but they have several significant drawbacks:
- quite laborious in execution;
- have no low price;
- require the use of special equipment.
However, there is one kind that is unfairly forgotten - this is insulation of the ceiling with sawdust.
Advantages, disadvantages of the application

The use of wood material has several undoubted advantages:
- As the main heat insulator used natural, natural, environmentally friendly material.
- Wood has a low coefficient of heat transmission - it is a warm mass according to tactile sensations.
- It has excellent sound insulation - this is an important factor in the house, especially if the living room will be equipped in the attic.
- Sawdust is wood waste - they have a low cost.
- This insulation has a low specific density - any person can handle a bag of dry material.
- Sawdust weight technological in the application.
Along with this, there are a number of negative points:
- The woody substance is hygroscopic, - chopped wood absorbs moisture from the air, when the atmospheric humidity exceeds 60-70%.
- The material is easily damaged by rodents, a mold, fungus can appear on the wetted substrate, rotting begins.
- Sawdust well support combustion - the presence of air in their composition contributes to the development of smoldering for several hours.
Ways of warming

All stages of work on the use of sawdust as a heater, you can do it yourself. There are several ways to use natural insulation:
- dry;
- with the addition of clay;
- based on cement binder.
Dry way
The essence of this method is to cover the entire surface of the attic base with wood waste. For this type of insulation using well-dried material. To determine the approximate degree of moisture of the source material can be the method of "clumping". Dry sawdust, being clenched in the palms, easily scattered, make a crisp, squeaky sound. Moist material under mechanical stress clumps together.
Stages of work:
- Possible gaps between the ceiling boards are filled with mounting foam or cover the entire surface with thick cardboard. The latter can be fixed by means of a furniture stapler. You can use a more durable material, which is also a product of wood waste processing, such as fiberboard (fibreboard) or chipboard (chipboard).
- A large fraction of sawdust is poured, including small chips. The thickness of the coating is about 10 cm. The material is evenly distributed over the entire surface and compacted, for example, with feet or wooden pushes.
- This is followed by approximately the same layer of small sawdust, which is also subjected to compaction.
- When using the room as an attic, it is necessary to cover the layer of insulation with a vapor-permeable film. Polyethylene and other similar materials can not be used, otherwise, the occurrence of oprelost sawdust with their subsequent decay.
- Arranged overlap, for example, from boards, plywood, chipboard.

In the composition with clay
This composition is used for insulating floors that are located above a wet room, for example, a laundry, bath or bath.

Sequence:
- The clay is mixed with sawdust. The procedure is carried out on a fenced site or in a large container - an old bathtub or a metal barrel, cut along the length, will do. Ratio: 8–10 volume parts of sawdust, 1–2 parts of clay are taken. The mixture is wetted and thoroughly mixed until a uniform color is obtained.
- A moisture insulating material is mounted on the heat-insulated surface, which will prevent the viscous wet mass from entering through the gaps into the lower room.
- The resulting solution of sawdust with clay is evenly distributed over the surface, compacted. The thickness of the layer should not be less than 10-15 cm, otherwise, the plate will not have the necessary strength.

With cement
Instead of clay, low-grade cement, for example, slag-cement, can be used as a binder. To deoxidize the solution, you can add fluff lime. Approximate composition ratio: 10 parts of sawdust, 1 part of cement, 1 part of lime. The mixture is water shut. The degree of moisture solution - "semi-dry" state. Willingness is determined by hand - molded something resembling a bun. With sufficient moisture, a stable product is obtained that does not spontaneously disintegrate into small pieces.
Kinds работ примерно такие же, как с использованием глиняных составов. Но толщину, из-за более высокой теплопроводности, целесообразно увеличить до 15–20 см. Срок полного высыхания утепляющей подушки составит 2–3 недели.

Note! Laying in two layers, with the use of reinforcing mesh between them, will create a strong and warm base on which you can safely place heavy furniture. That is, turn the attic into a living room like an attic.
Tip 1. The method of insulation with the use of sawdust with cement can be used when working on the insulation of glazed terraces, balconies or loggias, that is, where the strength properties of the base are needed.
Tip 2. As the formation of flooring, at the same time playing the role of insulation, it is advisable to use chipboard. These plates are applicable on clay and cement compositions.
If we consider the above methods of insulation from an economic point of view and the complexity of the work, the chain will look like this: dry sawdust - clay composition - cement binder.
