Which finishing material is most suitable for the bathroom? Almost all builders will answer that the best choice is ceramic tile. But, if we are talking about the ceiling, then this option is unacceptable. Much more suitable plastic panels or suspended ceiling. In addition, you can pay attention to the paint, which has the following advantages:

  • It is cheaper than any other modern finishing material;
  • You can get rid of the annoying color at any convenient time;
  • light shades allow you to visually increase the area of a small bathroom.

Choosing how to paint the ceiling in the bathroom, it is necessary to take into account the technical characteristics of the paint.

Paint requirements

Paint must have certain properties

The main qualities that should be painted for the ceiling in the bathroom:

  • environmental cleanliness - exposure to high temperature and humidity should not lead to the release of harmful gases;
  • hydrophobicity - the painted surface should not be washed away and lose color from the constant exposure to water;
  • resistance to frequent exposure to modern detergents;
  • durability - the color should not lose saturation, at least for 3 years;
  • reliability - the painted surface should not crack or peel;
  • vapor permeability - this criterion is very important for the room, which is characterized by high humidity.

Based on the above criteria, we can conclude that oil paint definitely will not work, as temperature drops and humidity will lead to darkening and the appearance of yellow spots. In addition, the drying period is quite long, and since the bathroom is a poorly ventilated room, the process may take several weeks.

Latexna

The bathroom is a place that is constantly characterized by high humidity, so the paint should be resistant to the effects of steam and sedimentation of the plaque, that is, to have water-repellent characteristics. Such properties are inherent in vinyl and acrylic paints (latex). As their main advantages can be identified:

  • ecological purity of the coating;
  • ease of application;
  • instant drying;
  • no smell.

You should pay attention to the latex paint also because it often includes antifungal additive.

Another significant plus latex paint - the ability to apply to virtually any surface, whether it is primed concrete base, glass, fiberboard or particleboard. No worse, it will feel on a whitewash or a layer of old wallpaper. During operation, the latex paint will not peel off, and during application - to spread, which is very convenient and economical.

Silicate

For painting the ceiling in the bathroom also suitable silicate and silicone paint. The main disadvantage of silicate paint is a low level of elasticity, therefore, it cannot be used to mask cracks, but it will relieve mold and prevent its appearance.

Note! Experts say that silicone paint is ideal for the ceiling in the bathroom. With it, you can get rid of deep cracks, in addition, the paint is able to withstand steam and frequent temperature fluctuations.

Features of different types

How to paint the ceiling in the bathroom so that there is no fungus? What is the best paint among the existing ones? In any hardware store a wide range of paint materials is presented. But first you need to focus on water-based paints, which include acrylic, latex, silicate and silicone solution. This option is ideal for painting the ceiling in the bathroom with their own hands.

Water emulsion

Note! Water paint should be diluted with water. The main feature is the fact that after dyeing and evaporation of water, the surface is dressed in a film. Neither wet particles nor temperature drops are terrible for such a coating.

The most popular type of water-based paint is acrylic latex paint. Experts assure that with just two layers of such paint, you can get a high-quality coating. The properties of acrylic latex paint make it possible to block cracks with a width of 1 mm.

Mineral plaster, lime or cement is best painted with silicate paint. Among the main disadvantages are the following points: the paint is inelastic and unable to bridge the cracks. The main positive feature of silicone is to prevent the development of harmful microorganisms. That is, during further operation, it is not necessary to treat the surface with an antiseptic solution.

Акриловые и силикатные краски значительно уступают силиконовым. Такую краску характеризуют высокая паропроницаемость и водонепроницаемая пленка. Silicone краска не боится температурных перепадов и повышенной влажности.

Silicone

In general, silicone paint is the preferred option for painting the ceiling in a bathroom. Silicone film is not exposed to various contaminants. In addition, it is very elastic, which allows you to hide cracks up to 2 mm thick. The place of its application is the mineral surface. If we take into account the financial side of the issue, we can safely call silicone paint an expensive finishing material.

Ceiling in the country

Painted plasterboard

Among the materials most suitable for the ceiling in the bathroom in the country can be called a stretch film or moisture resistant plasterboard, which, if desired, can be painted. If the main goal is efficiency, then you should stop the choice on the plastic ceiling, for the manufacture of which special PVC panels are used.

You can paint even stretch ceiling

Of course, if only wood was used for finishing the bathroom, then the ceiling should be made of the same material.

Ceiling repair sequence after leakage

You can repair the ceiling in the bathroom after a leak.

The first thing to do is remove the source of moisture and wait for the ceiling to dry completely.

Leaked ceiling

After this, it is worthwhile to proceed to the elimination of yellow spots: with a spatula it is necessary to remove pieces of putty and peeling paint. Then you need to take a sponge and process the ceiling with whiteness. In the end, the cleaned surface should be treated with a solution of isosulfate or copper sulfate.

If after 2–3 days the stains do not show up again, then you can proceed to the next stage - finishing the ceiling. The surface needs to be puttied - the best result can be achieved if you use a glass cloth reinforced mesh, the cell size of which is 2.5 to 2.5 mm, when working.

The entire surface of the ceiling should be rolled up, not just the flooded areas. If the stains reappear, then you need to apply a few more layers of paint.

Note! Emulsion paint can not get rid of the manifestation of stains, and oil can cause a change in the color of the ceiling.

Self painted ceiling in the bathroom

The ceiling in the bathroom can be painted independently, but the following tools and materials must be prepared beforehand:

  • good putty;
  • anti-fungal primer;
  • a short-hair roller and a special bath designed for dipping the roller;
  • ladder;
  • narrow and wide trowel;
  • tassel;
  • overalls.
Putty

First you need to get rid of the old coating and conduct a thorough inspection of the ceiling plate. If there is a perfectly flat surface, the primer can be applied immediately. But this option is extremely rare, much more often you must first remove the irregularities.

Remove the small cracks allows finishing putty. For its application, you will need two spatulas: a smaller one - in order to scoop the putty and put it on a wide one, spreading it evenly across the entire width, and a wide one - for directly applying the putty on the ceiling.

After the putty is completely dry, the surface should be cleaned using a fine emery cloth.

Grinding

When all the above manipulations are completed, you need to apply a primer and let the surface dry well.

Before use paint needs to be dissolved with water and to mix carefully. Too thick composition may leave marks between the stained bands. The optimum paint consistency is similar to milk. You can change the color with gouache or color pastes. Add dry pigment or paint that has a different basis is unacceptable. Coloring should be done with a roller, brush or spray gun. The most preferred is a fur roller - it allows you to create an even layer.

Coloring

You need to start with the application of narrow strips around the perimeter of the ceiling with a brush. Then paint should be applied to the roller, for which rolling it is recommended to use a bath or any other clean, level surface. The application of each subsequent layer must be perpendicular to the previous one. And to work with the finishing layer, you need to use a new roller.
