Paint on the concrete floor: types and order of application

Building

No matter how reliable the material from which the floor is made, it still requires a protective treatment. This even applies to concrete pavement. The simplest and most accessible type of treatment is floor painting. We will consider it.

Advantages of concrete floor painting

Unlike other species, protection by painting the floor has the following advantages:

  • more affordable price - paint costs less than, for example, self-leveling industrial coating;
  • preparation of structure is not required - mix is immediately ready for use;
  • possibility of use in rooms that are not heated;
  • quickness of drying - it usually takes about three hours for heated buildings and 6 hours for non-heated rooms.

Types of concrete floor paints

Different types of compositions can be applied on concrete surfaces. The following table will tell you about their types and properties.

Types of paints Properties
Acrylic Such compositions are resistant to high temperatures and humidity. They create a uniform protective layer that can be glossy, matte or semi-gloss. The use of such a coating is possible within 2-3 days after its application.
Acrylic Silicone This paint on a concrete floor is very durable and resistant to abrasion. It has good adhesion, which keeps it well even on a very smooth concrete surface. It has low electrostaticity, due to which dust is not attracted to it. Its minus is a limited set of colors.
Alkyd-urethane They are more opaque than the above two types of mixtures. Form an abrasion resistant, glossy surface. Polyurethane paint for concrete allows you to implement a variety of colors, because it has a wide range of various shades.
Epoxy Consist of two components that are mixed using a special mixer just before use. The coating obtained is durable and resistant to abrasion. In addition, it is well tolerated by the effects of precipitation. This polymer paint on concrete has one drawback - a small number of colors.

Tip! It is impossible to paint with an acrylic composition a floor on which there is an old epoxy or polyurethane coating, since the result thus obtained will be short-lived. In turn, it is better to use epoxy paint for newly filled floors. It will help prevent possible cracking of the concrete.

The procedure for applying paint on concrete floor

Regardless of what floor paint on the concrete will be used, it will have to be applied in several stages. And each of them must be treated very carefully, since the overall result, durability and attractiveness of the coating obtained depend on the quality of their performance.

Surface preparation

The preparatory process includes the following work:

  1. embedding irregularities;
  2. dedusting concrete;
  3. grinding;
  4. hardening of concrete;
  5. padding.

They are held exactly in the specified surface.

Therefore, we will consider them in order, which means we will start by removing the irregularities of the concrete surface:

  • to eliminate protruding defects, cutting of reinforced concrete with diamond circles will be required;
  • small depressions are cleaned differently - diamond drilling of holes in concrete is used for them. The holes prepared as a result of it are cleaned, treated with a primer, and then sealed with a special mastic or cement mortar.

The next stage of our work is dust removal. It begins with the removal of debris from the entire surface of the floor. Then, in order to remove dust, the concrete is thoroughly swept.

Sweeping surface

After this, the surface is ground. This is done with a grinder. Such treatment will make the floor surface smoother and increase its adhesion, making the paint more firmly on the treated surface.

The dust formed in the process of this work is cleaned with a construction vacuum cleaner.

The next step is to harden the floor. It is produced by applying special formulations called toppings.

The use of these mixtures helps protect the floor, both from dust and abrasion, which occurs due to abrasive impact. Another positive point is that the surface becomes impact resistant.

Topping packaging

Toppings are of three types:

  • Quartz - are used most often. They allow you to create a floor covering with your hands that can withstand medium loads, similar to those in garages, shopping centers and workshops. They got the name from their main component - quartz sand;
  • Korundovıe - incorporate mineral corundum filler, as well as pigments and special additives. Thanks to him, corundum mixture is able to create a strong and durable coating with excellent adhesion to concrete;
  • Metallized - due to the presence in its composition of metal shavings can withstand very large loads, in particular the movement of heavy equipment. Their disadvantage is the possibility of filler corrosion, which is why such mixtures cannot be used in places with high humidity.

Instructions for use of topping provides 2 options for its application:

Application Method Special features
Dry This implies the use of a dry mix, which is evenly distributed over the fresh concrete layer.
Wet Topping mixture is diluted with water, after which the resulting composition is applied to the floor. The result is a more voluminous layer, with a thickness of up to 6 millimeters.

Further, the final stage of the preparatory work is carried out - surface priming. Thanks to him, the subsequent painting of the concrete floor will be better, because the coloring composition will be better fitted to the treated surface.

Padding

Tip! When choosing a primer, do not forget that there are formulations designed separately for internal and external work. For the best effect, purchase exactly the variety you need. In extreme cases, you can use the universal composition, which has a quick-drying acrylic base.

Paint application

It is possible to paint a concrete surface at an ambient temperature of at least +5 degrees and a humidity not higher than 80%. This is necessary to ensure that the composition lay down evenly.

Tip! When carrying out work, be sure to use protective equipment. These include a respirator, goggles and gloves.

Floor paint on concrete is applied as follows:

  1. Masking tape protects areas that will not be painted;
  2. The container with paint opens and its contents are mixed using a construction mixer or a conventional drill with a special nozzle;
  3. In the tray for the roller is poured a small amount of the mixture;
Bath
  1. The roller is gradually dipped into the pallet, after which the floor is painted;
Paint application
  1. After applying the first layer of coating should wait a day until it dries. After that, the obtained result is evaluated and a decision is made about the necessity of applying the second layer.

Conclusion

Painting the concrete base allows you to get a durable coating, which is much cheaper than self-leveling floors.

As a working material, they use:

  • acrylic,
  • acrylic silicone,
  • alkyd-urethane,
  • epoxy paints.

Apply them only after careful preparation of the concrete surface. Used for processing roller.
