Flexible machined timber and its use

Building

Any building material has its advantages and disadvantages. A wide range of products of the timber industry complex is no exception.

Wood of different species when used in construction has certain advantages and some natural disadvantages.

Pros and cons of wood

Wood building materials have a wide range of advantages. It is known that the best concert halls are veneered with wood.

The advantages of wood include:

  1. natural, constantly renewable raw material base;
  2. high specific strength;
  3. resistance to aggressive media;
  4. environmental safety for humans;
  5. excellent acoustic and aesthetic properties.

Natural disadvantages of wood are as follows:

  1. the tree is prone to decay;
  2. may be struck by a borer;
  3. burns well;
  4. can swell, shrivel, warp, crack under the influence of environmental influences.

Many of these natural deficiencies are eliminated by treating wood materials. At present, it is no longer difficult to resolve the question of how to treat a cant from rotting, from ignition and the invasion of insect pests.

When deciding how to process a bar for a greenhouse or how to process a bar outside the house, you can choose the necessary compounds from a wide range of impregnations. But the technology for the manufacture of bent-glued structures has become the most interesting solution for using the positive properties of wood.

Such constructions are processed in the factory, using basically the physical properties of the tree, which allow it to change its shape when exposed to moisture, temperature and dynamic forces, while maintaining the resulting shape at the end of these external factors.

And the process of steaming in the chambers allows you to process the wood from pests. Naturally, when deciding on the construction of a log house, it is desirable to acquire an already processed timber. (See also the article Features of the treatment of timber from rotting)

In the factory, its impregnation occurs in special autoclaves, under pressure, which allows filling all the pores of the wood with the compound. Even considering that the price of such material is more expensive than raw, it will last much longer and will not be subject to decay and other misfortunes.

Bending technology

In the photo - the arc for the front harness of the flexible beam.

Instructions for making arcs passed from generation to generation. The peasants went to a lowland, closer to the water, behind the willows. It is at Vetla that the wood is viscous and light, and when bent it does not break off.

I took a veil ridge, which was cracked in the chopping blocks with the help of wedges, then these chopping steamed in steam rooms or in boilers, and even in manure.

After steaming, which could last a month, they began to bend on special platforms, called “perishing”. The arc bent and in such a state was fixed and dried.

The method of transforming wood by steam bending seems the most mysterious. Getting into the steam chamber in the form of a rigid bar, it comes out of it plastic, easily taking its new shape.

What happens to the tree when steaming? Each cell of wood fibers is covered with lignin, a glue-like chemical substance. At ordinary temperature, it binds the fibers very tightly.

The heat in the steaming chamber softens the lignin, which makes it possible to displace the fibers. In this process, some fibers can be compressed, while others - to stretch, and the bar can take a given shape. While cooling and hardening, the lingin again firmly holds the fibers together in a new, bar-shaped form.

Bent-adhesive construction of the house allows you to not produce interior walls.

Bending in factories and workshops expose billets of solid wood, glulam, planed veneer and plywood.

Important. The most plastic are the species of deciduous trees. The most popular material for bending is birch veneer.

Modern manufacturing technology of bent-glued wood products allows you to reach the top in architectural and design creations made of wood. (See also the article Interior design options for a wooden house from a bar)

The process of manufacturing bent-glued elements consists of the following steps:

  1. cutting materials for bending;
  2. hydrothermal treatment;
  3. bending blanks;
  4. drying the blanks;
  5. bonding, pressing;
  6. final processing.

Important. The process of gluing lamellae and pressing can occur both before and after bending.

The properties possessed by the treated catalium timber are due to the technology of its manufacture. Bent on the shape of the slats of which it consists, undergo a process of pre-drying. Assembly by pressing lamellae relieves wood stress.

As a result, the beam acquires the following properties:

  1. shape stability;
  2. low weight;
  3. increased carrying capacity;
  4. increased strength;
  5. holds a form;
  6. does not crack.

When using this material in interior decoration as columns, arches or curved beams, the question does not arise, and it doesn’t require deep processing to treat the timber inside the house.

The use of curved wood structures

The use of new technologies in construction allows you to create structures of various shapes and sizes from wood. As a result of their use, you can get original architectural and design solutions.

Interior decoration

Curved handrails are an important design element.

Curved wooden fences have become an essential element in the decoration of staircases. Bent wooden handrails will decorate the stairs on the bowstrings of a flexible beam, concrete structures and wrought iron stairs.

Curved shapes give more charm to the stairs:

  1. rotary curved handrails;
  2. bowstrings;
  3. kosoura.

Beautifully curved wooden arches, beams and balustrade fences are decorated with museums and concert halls. The furniture on the legs of elegant curved shapes is made using the same technology.

Buildings and constructions

From these parts collect buildings and structures:

  1. playpens;
  2. stables;
  3. bridges;
  4. athletic facilities;
  5. storage spaces;
  6. exhibition spaces.
Bent-glued bridge structures.

This technology has found an interesting application in the construction of dome structures. The construction is very simple, it is self-supporting and has only two attachment points - at the top and bottom.

Beams bend under a certain radius, connecting at the top, forming a dome. The reference load is evenly distributed over the entire area of the resulting hemisphere. Structures of this form are particularly resistant to wind loads.

In addition to dome structures, curved support beams of various sections and sizes are also produced. With their help, you can cover large areas without the use of internal columns.

Important. The basis for the curved ceiling beams can serve as load-bearing walls, support columns or the foundation itself. It is very convenient in the construction of hangars, swimming pools, exhibition space and other large spaces.

Bent-glued span structures.

The most widely used construction of flexible timber is found in modern construction and interior design of houses made of timber. They make the design process easier, add originality and visual appeal to structures. In the presented video in this article you will find additional information on this topic.
