Building

Building a house is a responsible event that requires careful preparation for all stages of this process, from design to supplying communications and interior decorating. Let's just say the process is not cheap, but there are materials and technologies that allow you to build not just a full-fledged structure, but significantly save the cost of such construction.

Today, we build a house out of glued timber, and why not.

Acquaintance, Pros and Cons

Glued beam is more expensive than frame construction, but safer and faster.

By itself, the material is represented by one or several types of wood, fragments of which are treated with special aseptic impregnations and glued together with an adhesive composition containing tar. As a result of this process, at the exit we have a bar with grooves for joints and fully ready for use.

Outwardly, this product resembles a profiled timber of natural moisture from solid wood, however, due to the technological features of the gluing process, the resulting analog is much stronger than solid wood.

In addition, the positive points include:

  • To end the conversation about strength, it is necessary to mention that, as in the production of plywood, strength is achieved by gluing veneer at a different angle to each other, so in this case we have a material whose fibers are glued at an angle to each other. And it is precisely this particularity of the joint that excludes the possible deformation (like that of a whole woody bar) at high humidity or a time factor and different temperatures;
  • The material itself is absolutely eco-friendly, all the details are exclusively of wood and the technology does not provide any additional compositions. However, the glue that is used to join these materials contains phenol. And although lately the developers have significantly reduced its content in the compositions, he is still there and can declare himself under certain circumstances;
Smooth warm walls.

Tip! It is believed that if the technological process of production of profiled glued laminated timber was not disturbed, then phenol itself will not manifest itself, if there is insufficient treatment with antiseptics, the tree may begin to rot, and then it will be the case that phenol will declare itself. How to guarantee yourself from this? First, to buy material from a verified seller, and second, to independently carry out additional antiseptic processing, especially for mating surfaces and end sides.

  • A few words about the timing of assembly. If you have chosen glued laminated timber, the construction of houses will take place in front of you during one of your holidays. Calculated data show that a single-storey full-fledged house can be driven out in one month by a brigade of 5-6 people. If you cannot afford to hire or invite such a brigade, then even 3 employees can “raise” such a house in 1.5-2 months.

Regulations for the construction of laminated timber houses are even faster than for the construction of frame structures. Total time costs will be equal to the sum of the already described terms and time for the construction and upholding of the foundation. Although if you are using metal piles, then you can add a maximum of a week to the time period already described;

  • The thermal conductivity of products is relatively low, which allows not to carry out additional insulation and will stop at the basic points - insulation of floors, ceilings and roofs. Although for the sake of objectivity, I would like to say that there is not much insulation;
  • Another important factor that is worth mentioning is the shrinkage of the finished structure. Yes, a log house shrinks. This is a normal process and one cannot get away from it; any instruction will tell you that every wooden building shrinks from 2 to 15%. So if we build houses from laminated veneer lumber, then this figure will be minimal. Some advocates of such construction offer to start finishing immediately, but we recommend that you do not hurry, why, you will understand a little later.

From positive aspects to less pleasant:

  • A tree is a tree and you can’t get away from processing with special impregnations from rot and bark beetles, as well as antipyretics;
  • The estimate for the construction of a house of glued timber clearly demonstrates that the price of the material will be several times higher than at least the same round timber. But hurry to reassure you, the processing technology of glued analog is extremely simple and allows you to hold them with your own hands, using an ordinary chainsaw. The technology of processing log beams requires special skills or special equipment, so that at the output we can get a picture when price indicators will be able to align the scales;
  • The final finish. According to the canons of wooden architecture for a wooden structure is given a year of exposure. This is done so that the details could firmly fall into place. The greatest shrinkage is on the log, the minimum on the puff in question. For some reason everyone speaks about 2%, and absolutely forget or ignore the upper possible limit of shrinkage of 4%.

Is it worth it to build a house from glued timber or not, it’s up to you to decide, we move on and go on to cover the issues directly built.

About what will stand

The tape is simple and reliable.

The construction of houses from laminated veneer lumber, as well as from any other material, begins with the foundation. And here at once I would like to inform you that the cost of building a house from glued laminated timber can be reduced or increased accordingly.

In this case, it all depends on:

  • Kind of the foundation, note that the more fundamental the foundation, the more expensive it is. But the capital foundation provides more opportunities. This is a cellar, a parking lot, and a workshop, and what else can be built if the base allows;
  • How are you going to build this foundation. If you do it yourself, then the cost of the foundation will be equal to the cost of the material; if you invite specialists or use special equipment, it will also cost money.

In this material, we offer you an intermediate option that will allow you to reach the best price-quality option.

This is a strip foundation, which is built as follows:

  • Along the perimeter of the whole structure, a ditch is dug to the level of the freezing depth and a certain width;

Note! Sometimes it is difficult to determine the width of the digging, but in this case, make an orientation on the width of the material and 10 cm from each edge of it. If you plan to subsequently make a brick lining, then the width of the foundation from the outside should be increased by the planned width of insulation and the width of the brick.

Ready to fill.
  • The walls of the ditch are evened out with a shovel, the bottom is lined with rubble and 10 cm high sand. For smooth laying of the pillow, the sand is moistened with water;
  • Exposed formwork. To do this, take all the material at hand, with sufficient strength, boards, plywood, wooden boards. The formwork is set vertically on both sides and is fixed by transverse slats and external stoppers for evenness of the structure;
  • Next comes the reinforcement of the future foundation. The reinforcement rods are laid in the pit in such a way that a three-dimensional structure is obtained, reinforced at the corners and at the joints of the foundation tapes. At the same stage, the water supply and removal of sewage from the house is thought out;
  • After that, layer-by-layer pouring of the concrete mix is carried out, which can be prepared independently, or you can buy ready-made and put it in a prepared bed. The mixture must be rammed for tighter laying in its box;
  • Full-fledged work on the foundation of this type begins in 2-3 weeks. After he has survived and will acquire the necessary fortress.

Now the walls

Well, not LEGO, already with grooves for assembly.

How to build a house of laminated veneer lumber, if there are three basic techniques, not counting the various variations and copyright advice. The easiest, in our opinion, the assembly option is a groove in the spike.

But about the assembly itself in stages:

  • Bitumen is poured onto the finished foundation, heated to a liquid state, and a layer of roofing material is laid on top 30 cm more than the thickness of the foundation, this procedure is repeated once more;
  • A lining board is laid on the prepared lining, which serves as a joint for wood and is pre-impregnated with antiseptics. It is fixed and ebb, which will take away excess moisture from the wall;
  • Then the first crown is laid, in which all the joints are laid with a special strip - jute insulation;
  • The beams are connected by hooks with wooden crutches of 30 cm length, which fix two beams between each other, the subsequent fixings are carried out in a checkerboard pattern. Thus, the walls are recruited to the roof.

About ceilings and roofs

No windows, but under the roof.

At this stage, the assembly of supporting structures for the ceiling and, respectively, the floor of the attic or attic is carried out. If you use heat insulant according to the type of expanded clay, then this stage can be done immediately. If it is mineral wool or another type of insulation, then this process is best done after installing windows and doors.

Tip! Before the house hardens in anticipation of shrinkage, it must be completely covered with a roof.

Finally

Unfortunately, no one, up to a penny, can tell how much it costs to build a house from glued laminated timber. The video in this article has prepared a more technical statement of the problem, but on the topic.
